Apolgies for taking 9 years to pick up on this. I am also Michael Geelan. My father was Peter Brian Kenneth Geelan (deceased 1992) and my uncle, his brother, Patrick John Geelan (aged 84). Their father, my grandfather, was Michael Geelan (a national newspaper editor) and his father, my great grandsfather, was John A. Geelan (died approx 1936). Not certain which part of Ireland he, John, hailed from but we think it could well be Leitrim. So could he be from Roosky also?

My Grandmother is a Geelan and I'm currently trying to trace my Geelan line and have managed to get back to Ireland. The earliest Geelans I have are from Cloonageeher. The majority of them after that are from Longford. I have quite a few John Geelans in my line and I know that many of my Geelans moved to Canada and America.

I'm trying to figure out if my Geelans are connected to yours. What was your Great Grandmothers name and what part of your country (I'm guessing the USA) did your Great Grandfather live?

Kind Regards
Tammy

My great grandparents, Thomas and Annie Wren Stewart, buried Calvary Cemetery, NYC in what was originally a Geelan grave purchased by Ann Geelan upon the death of her nephew, Michael (son of her brother, James) in 1882 when he was about 20 years of age and only in the USA about 6 months. Ann and her sister, Mary, were apparently the daughters of John Geelan and Ann Hackett of Rooskynamona, Bornacoola parish, Leitrim. The Wrens and Stewarts lived in the same building, 312 E24th St, with the Geelans in NYC for over 20 Years. As it turns out, Annie Wren Stewart's mother, Annie Murray Wren, who also lived there, was born in the townland of Keelagh adjoining Rooskynamona to John Murray and Catherine Hackett so I presume that the Geelans sisters and my great great grandmother were first cousins.

Hello, Steven. I am Carol Cleary Curtiss. I believe I have information regarding your Geelan relatives in central Illinois. I am a descendant of Patrick Cleary (1830-1905).

Patrick Cleary came to America from Queenstown, Cork, Ireland in 1841 with his father William Cleary. Patrick's siblings included Nicholas and Winifred Clara. (Maybe also Thomas and Daniel) They lived for a while in Will county, Illinois, perhaps working on the I&M canal and at a mill. Patrick bought a farm in Ashkum, Iroquois county, Illinois, in 1870. Many Clearys are buried in the Ashkum cemetery. There are also Legris family members there.

Winifred married Michael Geelan and they lived in the Essex, Kankakee county, Illinois. Sometime between 1880 and 1900 they moved to Palo Alto county, Iowa. Winifred's father William lived with them for a while. They may have moved in conjunction with a Carroll relative (a daughter of William may have married a Carroll).

Michael and Winifred had 13 or 14 children. My father, Jerry Cleary of Ashkum (now 89) knew them and named all the children I found listed in censuses.

Geelans are related to Kings through marriage. Michael and Winifred's daughter Mary married Joseph King. You are also related to McGinnisses and to Lonergans. Michael and Winifred's granddaughter Katherine McGinnis (daughter of Annie Geelan and George McGinnis) married James Lonergan.

It was Dad's memory that Michael and Winifred's children Tom, Rosina, and Hannah did not marry. Their son Nicholas (perhaps named after Winifred's brother?) married and had 7 children.

There are also Whalens and Feehans in there somewhere.

Do you have any information (death certificates, family stories, etc.) about Winifred and Michael, their move to Iowa, or their ancestors? I have not found where William died and was buried; do you know?

Sincerely,
Carol Cleary Curtiss
