Hi! From what I've learned, the original spelling of any family's last name changed in many families over time to other spellings, but whichever spelling any descendant family chose to use, it didn't matter, it was still all the same family. In the case of your fiance's and my (family's)ancestors, I believe that the Geikie spelling his family is using was the original spelling and, in my line, one of my ancestors chose to use the Geekie spelling and that's the way the name was spelled in the last couple of generations before my gt-grandfather was born.

Please help me here a little -- I don't know anything about the Miramichi fire -- what was it, when was it, and where did it take place? You mentioned "Muir and those" -- who exactly are they?

My maternal gt-grandparents came over separately from Dundee, in the years 1887 & 1888. If I call them Generation 1, then I'm the 4th generation in my family.

If you don't mind if I ask, what country do you live in? Maybe we could start there -- I live in the USA, in PA.

Please get back to me as soon as you can. Thanks!

Hello,

There are a lot of different spelling for Geikie, many more than I expected but they all do lead into one. This is the obit for Sean's ggrandfather Arthur W. Geikie. Sean is a sixth generation Geikie.

The death of Arthur W. Geikie occurred July 10 in St. Catherines, Ontario. Born in Newcastle 77 years ago, he was the sone of the late David and Clara(Bumberry) Geikie and had lived in Douglastown until 11 years ago. Surviving are is wife, the former Elizabeth Roy of Stonehaven; three sons, Roy, Ferry Road, Ward, Douglastown, and Harold, Chelmsford; two daughters, Vivain, Thorold Ont, and Genevieve, St. Catherines; two sisters Lorna Wood, Douglastown, and Miss Genevieve Geikie, Athol, Mass; five brothers, Muir, Stewart, Frank, Athol, Mass, Clair, Boston, Mass., and Johnston, hamilton, Mass.

The rest just states that where he rested and who the pallbearers were.

The Great Miramichi Fire happened in 1825. Most of the Miramichi area was gone b/c of the fire. If you google it you could read up on it. It really was a tragedy in it's time.

Muir is Arthur's brother, and the rest are listed.

I know that Sean's Geikie ancestors came from Scotland but I am just not sure when exactly they came over. Hopefully we could work together on this if it is your lineage as well.

I live in Miramichi, NB, Canada. Like I said before, Sean is a sixth generation Geikie. He was presented with a certificate quite a few years back. If I remember correctly it was on one of Canada's birthdays. I was told that his ancestors came over from Scotland after the Miramichi fire and rebuilt most of what is Douglastown today. His family also started the fire department in Douglastown, how ironic, given the circumstances.

I hope to be talking to you real soon.
