Geehan Name

Hi,
My name as you see above is Thomas Geehan orhinally from Belfast Northern Ireland - have been living in the USA for the past 7 years - in the Belfast phone directory the only Geehan's are my father and bother - believe the name is from Northern France - spelt Jeehan but pronounce Geehan in France - Great Garand father lived in County Tyrone - where the Huguenots - displaced from Norther France settled in Ireland. The reason for my assumptions being whilst living in France I came across a few people called Geehan (Jeehan) - easy to see that in rural Ireland the J and G were interchanged.
Believe ther is a Geehan family living in Stabrane - Norther Ireland.
Also came across Geehan in St Johns's New Foundland last week - at the airport lady asked if I was part of the Geehan clan in New Foundland! needs further research

Hello,
I'm a Guihan from St. John's Newfoundland, only
my family and my uncle are on the island. However,
the are also the Geehan's, who ironically live not far
from my family. The names are prounounced the same,
but we have always thought there was no relation.
If anyone can clear that up for us, it would be great.

Shannon:

I believe Guihan/Guihen/Guighan and Geehan are from the same old Irish name O Gaoithin, which means "wind." My own Guihan family is from County Leitrim, where they probably spread from Roscommon (which is apparently the original home of the family). The names are often anglicized "Wynne," as in my family, which used Guihan until my grandfather came to the U.S. FYI, our family here and in Ireland pronounce our name "GWEE-han." There is another family in County Kerry, where it is pronounced "GUY-han", I believe.

Where is your family originally from?

Michael Wynne

P.S. There is some stuff on the web here and there about the original name O Gaoithin and the forms it took over time.

Shannon,
Guihan and Geehan are the same name anglisized from the Irish O'Gaoithin meaning "wind". Many Winn/Wynn/Wynne surnames in Ireland come from Guihan (O'Gaoithin), also. My G-Great Grandfather was Patrick Guihan from Killorglin, Co. Kerry. His son William, my Great Grandfather moved to Manchester, CT, in 1870, and he spelled his surname Geehan. There are a number of Geehan researchers here in Massachusetts, whose ancestors are from Topsail, Newfoundland, just outside of St. John. I can give you their names if you wish. I have other Guihan information also, from different parts of Ireland, including Kerry.
Good Luck on your search. Wasyne Geehan
