I am looking for information about my g-g-grandparents John J. Gehan/Geehan (b. ~1832, Ireland, d. 1905) and Julia Ann Smith (b. ~1831-33, Ireland, d. 1888). Family history states that Julia left for America (probably New York) and John followed to marry her - probably in the late 1840s or early 1850s. They were married on May 1st 1853. The 1860 census finds them in Layfayette Co., Wisconsin and lists the birthplace of oldest daughter Catherine as New York in 1854. The 1870 census shows them still in Layfayette Co., WI, but Catherine's birthplace is now listed as Wisconsin. The family moved to Iowa before 1880. Children of John and Julia are Catherine, James, Ellenor, Patrick, Mary Ann, Julia, and John. The 1860 and 1870 census spell the name as Geehan, but the later spelling of Gehan stuck. I am unsure of the original spelling, if the census taker made a mistake, or if the spelling was changed.
