Where Did The Name Gee Orginate?
Hi, I'm curious, I am of Chinese decent and the name Gee I always believed to be Chinese.
After reading some of the messages, I find myself totally surprise to find that many people of Anglo and African decent also have the surname of Gee.
Do you have Chinese heritage? Has your name been shorten?
Does anyone have any information.
Thank You Yolanda Gee

Yolanda, My last name is Gee and my family originally came from Ireland. My family name was McGee originally and someone in our family, my grandfather perhaps, married an English girl and the "Mc" was stripped from his name and thus Gee was originated. That has been the information in my family. I hope this might be helpful. Shannon

My mother's maiden name was Gee. In the 1930's, my two Uncles changed it to McGee. In 1993, I contacted a knowledgeable person, Mary Ellen B Miller. She said, "Gee is Irish, with the Mc or the O' before the name means son of, as in McGee, but with my Gee it is by it's self. The Old Celtic spelling would be MagAoidh. For all the spellings the name means the son of the fire."

Shannon Shannon, Thank you so much for responding. You have helped to clear up my confusion. I figuered that some how along the line someone had dropped the "Mc" or "Mac" or "O". This bit of information has been helpful. Again thank you very much.

Elsa, Thank you for responding to my inquiry. It's intersting how "Mc" was added instead of deleted. I expected the opposite to occur. Since your mother's maiden name was originally Gee... What is her decent? Was she originally Irish or Chinese or other? You did't mention it. Again Thank You for the enlighting information.

Dear Yolanda, Our particular Gees came from Missouri and Arkansas in the late 1800s to the Indian Territory, Choctaw Nation, which later became the State of Oklahoma. So in that branch we are Irish and Native American. We are not Chinese, but we do know that the Native Americans probably came from Asia thousands of years ago. Good luck in your search.

Dear Elsa, Thank you for sharing with me your knowledge of the name Gee. It paints a clearer picture for me. And I find it fascinating that I share (perhaps many times removed)a name that seems to have an intersting past. I never would of imagined that the name Gee would of reached so many avenues.

Hi-we say gee as in a,b,c,...g,h etc. it seems to be English with some French Connection.

Hi Sharla, Thank you for responding. I also pronounce Gee as in the letter "G". The info that I have is that it is of Chinese origin. The other responses that I have received, confirm my suspicion that somewhere along the line, part of the name was dropped as in "McGee", "MacGee". Do you have any additional information to the changes other than the pronunciation?

I am black and my mother's family are Gee's, I was told it was a Chinese name also, but I can't trace back to where it started.
