Hi Greg

Tony Gee here.
I am familiar with Gee Cross even though so far I haven't found any connection to my family. My ancestors come from the same area except they are from the county of Derbyshire (Gee Cross is in Cheshire).
My father (George b 1924) was born in Glossop, my grandfather (James 1878) was born in Mellor, ggf (John 1828) was born in Mellor and I believe my gggF (Samuel 1804) was also born in Mellor but have not been able to confirm this.

I myself lived in Marple when I was a kid. If you look at a map most of these places are within walking distance of each other.

I hope we can make a connection because I have yet been able to gonnect to another Gee.

regards Tony Gee

There might be the surname Gee, but that doesn't mean that the name has just one origin. The answer has to be "who knows". My maternal grandfather's family came from Gawsworth near Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. I've not fully proved links further back than the late 1700s, but the name Gee has been there from the1500s. That the name originated in Gee Cross is a possibility, but maybe Gee Cross was so called as a result of the surname. I certainly don't know a definite origin, but it seems to me that if an untruth is told often enough people will come to believe that it is the truth, especially if they want to believe it.

Perhaps the name came about just because some said "gee, that's a nice name!"

Likely France as Guy, Gui or Jay. They possibly entered from France during the Norman Invasion. There is an area called Hui in France. There were several very early families. I think they became sea merchants in.several areas in England.

The ongoing Gee Family DNA project (www.geeroots.org) has shown that the Gee name originated at least three separate time in England thus all Gees are not related. DNA research has also shown that early Gee ancestors from at least one Gee line migrated into Scandinavian countries and made their way into England either with the Jutes or the Normans or both. Those Gee ancestors who came from Norman roots probably get their name from the Norman Gui or Guy.

Hi the Gui, Guy family also comes from NORMANDY, FRANCE. Once they entered the US they changed their name to GEE. The French Gee's were some of the first settlers in what was called New France during the 1600's and 1700's most settling in Detroit, Michigan or across the river in Sandwich (now Windsor), Ontario, and also in Monroe, Michigan. There are 3 volumes of the French who settled in the River Raison area here in Michigan. During the 100 years war between England and France the monarchy of both France and England changed hands many times. Most of the English Henry's were of French origin. As far as I know none of us have entered the DNA project www.geeroots.org. I'll check out this site. Thanks!

Surnames: GEE, GEESON
According to the Oxford Names Companion (2002), Gee "...is of very uncertain origin. Forms which certainly belong here are not found before the 16th century. The existence of the patronymic Geeson points to a given name...but this has not been identified."

perhaps a simplistic approach but from speaking to a local historian, I gather many names developed from areas in which people lived or their occupation or on many occasions a letter of the alphabet was chosen, by the illiterate and many of these letters have over time morphed into surnames, this seemed like a logical explanation.
