The name Gee could have been French in Origin. As Gui or Jay. There is a town named Gui in France, and it is believed the family came over in the Norman Invasion of England. I have information that does go way back, but there were several Gee families. In Hull, Rothley, Leister, Manchester they appear to have been sea merchants.

from speaking to a local historian, I gather many names developed from areas or occupations or in many occasions a letter of the alphabet was chosen, by the illiterate and many of these letters have over time morphed into surnames, this seemed like a logical explanation.
