Hello...I am Sandi's cousin, and I may have some information. My grandfather's brother, Frederick Geddert did live in Maryland after WWII. I know my cousin Virginia went out there to live with her dad for a time (He and my aunt Myrtle were divorced) so that isn't any help for 1970...but it is a possible lead for information.

Sandi,
Here is the story of the Gedderts coming from Prussia/Germany in 1868. Charles Geddert, who was born in Detroit, was my great grandfather:

Geddert Family Voyage to the USA - 1868

Jacob and Louise Geddert came possibly from the Culm/Kulm/Golm Germany (Prussia) area, since this was the place the last of their children were baptized. At age about 38 and 36 they left the port of Bremen, Germany, on the ship the Magdalene which held over 100 passengers and made their way to the United States, sometime in early 1868. A record of their departure date could not be found at this time.

Louise was pregnant at the time of the voyage, and had eight children in tow ranging in age from 16 to 2 years old. Their names are as follows:

Augusta Pauline, age 16
Maria "Mary", age 14
Johann "John" August, age 12
Wilhelm "William" Freidrich, age 10
Paulina Wilhelmine, age 8
Eduard "Edward" Heinrich, age 6
Sarah "Sadie" Charlotte, age 4
Ernestine Amalie, age 2

The family arrived in tact per the ship's passenger list to New York on 29 Jun 1868, showing a final destination of Michigan.

10 days later, they were in Detroit, Michigan, where their youngest child Ernestine, age 2 years and 6 months, died on July 9, 1868, per her death registration. No cause was listed, but possible cause could be a contracted illness aboard the long ship's voyage. (I later found she died of the measles)

14 days after Ernestine's death, 24 days after reaching the US, Louise gave birth to Herman Jacob on 23 July 1868, in Detroit.

3 years later, Louise and Jacob Geddert became parents to Charles on 1 Jan 1871, in Detroit, Michigan.

The Gedderts spread out over Michigan, many heading up north to areas such as Cheboygan, Alpena, Onaway, and so on.
