Personally I am not researching the name GECHTER,
but that name has been mentioned a few times now on
my mailing list AMREV-HESSIANS-L@rootsweb.com
and if you are looking seriously, I would suggest to go
to the mail list archives of that list to find some more
information. If one wants to find answers, one has to
ask questions, that's the problem with this Board, nobody
asks the right questions, in fact, nobody asks any!
I am John Merz,
researching Hessian soldiers of the American Revolution.

Surnames: GECHTER, BABB
I'll ask a question.

Who were the parents of Elizabeth Gechter, said to be born Dec 1782?
She married in Berks County Pa, one Johannes Babb of Exeter township, Berks, PA.
I believe she must have had at leaast one sister and a brother. Wedding announcements were pub. in the Reading Adler for two others of this surname.

I fiind no others with this surname in/nea Berks County PA before about 1800. Does someone find a connection to this one?

Thanks
Liz J

Dear Liz;

In my first posting to this Board I specifically pointed out
the Rootsweb mailing list
AMREV-HESSIANS-L@rootsweb.com where answer may be
found. You should try the mail list archives which responds
to keyword searches, which is
http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
and when this site comes up, just enter the list name.
I woud suggest to try each year seperately for GECHTER.

Furthermore, last summer I retired from my Hessian research
and turned over all my research material to the S.A.R.
The Sons of The American Revolution Library in Louisville,
Kentucky, and should be available for researchers like
yourself. Also, the Johannes Schwalm Historical Association
has given their Hessian research sources to a depository and
they also answer questions.
In all, the 'Hessians of the American Revolution" are no longer
a dark secret, they are being researched and lots of info is
now available about them. Check http://www.google.com as
well, amazing what you will find, I am pretty sure you won't
see it all before the end of this year 2004.
Good luck to you, and have a very happy 2005.
Yours,
John Helmut Merz.
Still wandering through the Message Boards to help.

Have you found any more about your Elizabeth GECHTER? I am researching Catharine GETTER (GOTTER/GECHTER/JETTER, etc) who was born 1790, and hailed from the Berks/Phila./Lancaster area. She married by 1817 to Joseph HANNA (1782-1842). I have odds and ends of notes, but can't quite piece the families together.

Sorry, I have not found any new info on this family. I have been researching other families elsewhere.
Good luck with your Catherine.
