"Recorded in a wide variety of spellings including Gebbie,Gibbie, Gebby, Gibbieson, Gibbon and Gibbonson, this is a Scottish surname of medieval origins. It is a patronymic form of the popular medieval nickname "Gib", itself a short form of the personal name "Gilbert". This given name was introduced into England and Scotland either in the 10th century a.d., or following the Norman invasion of England in 1066, which was given Scottish support. It was originally recorded as "Gillebert", and was composed of the pre 7th century a.d. Germanic elements "Gisil", meaning "noble youth", and "berht", bright or famous. Perhaps not surprisingly, given such a meaning, the name was very popular during the Middle Ages or that in time it generated a large number of variant surname spellings. In this case, early examples of the surname recordings include: Johun Gibson, who was the keeper of the castle of Rothesay in 1335, whilst John Gybbessone was a follower of the earl of Douglas in 1425, when he was exiled to England. Roland Gibbunson was recorded as being a burgess of Glasgow in 1430, and John Gibbieson was a chorister in Channory of Ross in 1560. As Gebbie and Gibbie the surname is very well recorded in Ayrshire since at leas the time of the establishment of church registers in the 17th century. These recordings include Isobell Gebbie, forn at Galston on June 4, 1672, Agnas Gebbie, who married John Muir at Kilmaurs, on May 26, 1711, and James Gibbie, a witness at Galston on October 19, 1799."

The "Gebbie"name origionated in the west of Scotlad region, mostly in Ayrshire..Family name goes back to the 17th centuary and before..My immediate family emmigrated to Canada from Glasgow Scotland in the early 60's..My mother and father past away several years ago, but my older brother Eddy, younger sister Christine and older sister Margaret are still living in the Toronto area.Including my nephew Andrew who lives in Barrie.

as I said, the name Gebbie is promonant in the Ayrshire region of Scotland..It is understood that the family origionated on the continent, were Flemish or Norman (Giselbert)lace makers and traders who eventually settled in Scotland..Their are both prominent and working class clan members throughout the USA, as well as the rest of the world.

I'm very interested in connecting with the Gebbie Family. I am Anita Gebbie-Deisch, Lakewood, CO. My father is James Gebbie, Denver. His father was John Bertram Gebbie Jr. of Bellevue, NE, his father JBG Sr. We lose the tree beyond that. Guess Great-Grandpa had a parting of the ways with his family. Would love to know more in the next few weeks. We are visiting our daughter in Scotland and would like to know of any other connections. Thanks!

My paternal grandmother's name was Jean Gebbie or Gebby. She was born around 1900 and emigrated to Canada from Paisley, Scotland when she was 16. I do not know much about her as a person or the rest of her family. I noticed that David Gebbie posted that his ancestors had come from Glasgow, Scotland and wondered if there is a family connection.
