GEBBEKEN/GEBKEN

Margaret (nee Gebbeken) Linneman’s place of origin is Meppen, Germany when it appears on her children’s birth records. According to the 1900 census she came to America in 1887 and she was born Oct 1862. Margaret’s father’s name is Henry and I think that her mother’s name may be Agatha.

J. Herman Gebbeken appears in the 1910 census, Burlington, Nodaway Co., Missouri, with the estimated birth year of 1874. Other research shows he married Catherine O’Connor around 1914 and died around 1916.

Catherine Gebbeken appears in the 1920 census in Jackson Co. Missouri with children: Herman age 6, Francis age 4 and Virginia age 4. (There is also Mary Linneman, age 27 who is listed as a roomer at this address, and this is the daughter of William and Margaret Linneman. My logical assumption is that Catherine is the sister-in-law of Margaret, or at least some relative.)

I am trying to find additional information on these Gebbeken’s to complete this portion of my family tree.
Is there anyone who has information they would share?

Surnames: Gebbeken
Herman Gebbeken, born in Missouri and married to Mary Gebbeken (do not know the maiden name). She had a child out of wedlock and Herman, being the man he was married her to give the child a last name. His name was James John Gebbeken, and Herman adopted him as his own. Mary had mental problems all her life and Herman cared for her as best he could. Herman died at the VA hospital in Los Angeles California in the 1960's. I am using the name of Gebbeken, but am not of Gebbeken birth as my stepfather is James Gebbeken. Herman rode the trains and sold trinkets to passengers for a living. He had many tales of his adventures and fondly recalled them to me on more than one ocassion. As for Mary, she died in the L.A. area but am unsure as to where. She was a very mean spirited woman with little or no remorse in how she treated people.
Also, we had a picture of the Gebbeken Shoe Store in Missouri but no longer know where the photo is. Maybe James might still have it. Also, he was born in Independence Missouri.
Hope all this helps

Additional information on the family of Margaret (nee Gebbeken) Linneman.

Her obituary of 1928 says she was born in Meppen, Hanover, Germany and also states she is survived by a brother J. H. Gebbeken of Clinton, Iowa and 2 sisters Mrs. H. H. Greeve and Mrs. F. Bentlege, both who lived in Holland.

If you have information that you can share relating to Margaret, her parents or siblings, I would be very thankful.
