My grandmother was born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Her name was Lillian Gear. She was born after 1883 but do not have the exact date yet. I am trying to figure this out. Hopefully soon I will be able to get the information. She married Edward C. Boyington of Winterport, ME.

Dear Fay, do you know your grandmother's parents names & possibly where they came from? I am resaerching my great-grandparents John & Eliza Jane (Penney) Gear, he was from Perry's Cove and she was from Salmon Cove, they also lived there they were born circa 1870 married circa 1890-4, their son James Edward was my grandfather. Some of their children moved to Bell Island, all of this is in Conception Bay. I beleive all the Gears in NF are related, I am just waiting to hear from some cousins there for info. Some Gears were Catholic, Methodist and United. I find searching in Newfoundland to be like the UK, you must have dates and locations, simply because Europeans have lived there for so long. Please send me further info and maybe we can find a connection or not. Have you checked out the Newfoundland Genweb Page, you can post a query on their board. Hope to hear back from you, Lois.

Lois, I will get more information very soon. I have contacted relatives that may have more knowledge of this situation. Once I get her birth and death dates it will help. I just need those to get certificates. Yes we are probably related and this could begin another side of my research. Thank you so much for answering. I will let you know as soon as I find out something. Like all women back then it was always the man's side they kept track of. Fay Casey

Hi Judy, I have hit a wall concerning my g-grandparents; John Gear (he was from an area known as Swansea just outside of Victoria and Perry's Cove) and his wife Eliza Jane Penney both born circa 1870. More than likely there is a family connection (cousin or great-aunt perhaps). Until I can get further information, though I cannot say one way or the other; needless to say it is very frustrating. Do you have Bridgit's parents names or her siblings, etc. if you do could you share them with me. If you want I can get you the mailing list for Rootsweb for Newfoundland, you may have more luck than me.
So more than likely there is a connection - just not able to prove it so far. If you have any more info I would love to hear back from you, have a great weekend, take care, Lois.

Surnames: Gear's
My wife's mother was Genevieve Bingham (nee Gear) Her father was Patrick Gear who was married to Veronica King (nee Ronan). His father we believe was Alexander Gear who married Mary White back in 1854. We say that we believe because there is a gap in Parish Records that we have found. They had Mary born in March 1858, Mary Josephine born in 1870 & Alexander born in 1872. Patrick was born 1862/3/4 & we believe that there were other children. the Voter's List for Perry's Cove in 1832 shows Alexander & Thomas Gear with AAlexandert being the father of the Alexanderthat was married in 1854. The Gear's mainly were from from Perry's Cove migrating to the Salmon Cove, Carbonear & Harbour Grace Areas. I have researched most of the business directories, voter's lists & census records & there are many, many Gear's shown.
I have just started my search & any information of assistance would be greatly appreciated. Genevieve had one sister & four brothers that moved to the Boston area.

Hi

I am researching the White's from Perry's Cove. Please contact me at bill900@hotmail.com.

PATRICK GEAR

Patrick Gear was born on December 22nd, 1896. The church records say only that he was born in Carbonear parish, but no doubt it was at Perry’s Cove. He was baptised two days later,on Christmas Eve, by Father (later Monsignor) F.D. McCarthy, a Carbonear man who was the parish priest there for 54 years. Patrick’s parents were William and Joanna (King) Gear; the sponsors were William and Mary Jane Ring, probably relatives of Joanna.
