With the new atDNA (autosomal dna) testing, I would again like to encourage Gean family members to participate in DNA testing. If you are a male Gean (descend from a line male Geans), y-chromosome DNA testing is still the answer for you and can be done from $120+. If you are a female Gean (even if it is one or two generations removed) you can now participate in the atDNA testing from $80 - $110.
There are y-chromosome projects at Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) and Ancestry, so I would encourage you to join one if you are doing the y-chromosome testing).
If you are doing the atDNA testing it is available at all three of the major sights: FTDNA, Ancestry and 23andMe. I do know that Gean members have tested at Ancestry for sure, I am not sure about FTDNA or 23andMe.
atDNA testing is not a guaranteed way to connect to your Gean ancestor, but it can help get you on the right track or at least help prove which of the five known Gean/Jean/Jayne families you belong to. People are getting successful links from five generations and back.
I would especially like to make this plea for descendants of Albert Gean & Cynthia Harmon! The atDNA testing may help prove once an for all whether or not Albert was a Gean from a male line or a female line. Currently all evidence points to his father being William Gean of Chatham Co., NC, however the only known dna test for this line indicates otherwise.
If you have any questions about the projects or you have already participated and have questions/problems, let me know.
