I have found very little information so far - except that it looks likely that Geall and Geal are the same name. There is an East Sussex branch and also a West Sussex branch around the Petersfield and the Bognor Regis area. I was told that it was of Dutch origin, but there is no evidence at all to support that - particularly as there were Gealls/Geals in Sussex around the beginning of the 16th century! It is highly possible that the name is celtic. I have barely begun so have little information to offer you.

I am sure that Geal and Geall are the same
name too. Geall is a gaelic word meaning promise
or pledge. Geal in gaelic means white.
My grandfather was born at 164 Croyden Road, Plaistow,
London. His name was William Samuel Geall.
(born 1904) His father John William may have
come from County Cork, Ireland. Any further
info welcome. email me at ageall@ns.sympatico.ca
