Dear Joanne,

You posted this some time ago but as you can tell I share your name. My understanding of the name is that it has a strong presence in North East Scotland of which Inverurie is included. Ther is a small stronghold still in North East Scotland of which I am the youngest. (26) I am told that the name is probably gaelic derived from 'white or fair'. Indeed the word is still used in parts of scotland to ask for a white cofee. I pronounce the name with a soft G, but it is probably more likely be pronounced with a hard G, but like ge-als.

Geale - UK and Australia

There are many Geale's in Australia, but the first one of mine arrived 1950's - Edward or John Edward Geale. A family story says there is a connection to the Meakin (pottery) family.

One THEORY is that this Edward was the son of Harriet Geale and William Fountain Meakin (married in London, and there was an Edward Henry Meakin born 1830's to this couple)and that he came to Australia in some sort of disgrace then took his mothers maiden name,Geale. From then followed a large family of Geales!

Edward Geale married in Australia Caroline Goodger - greatgranddaughter of First Fleet Convict James Ruse - in 1859.

Any additions, comments on this family/theory greatly appreciated.

Hi Chris. Just saw your message regarding Thomas Geal. I have a Thomas Geal in my family line. He was born in 1726 and died October 30, 1776. He married Mary Cruttenden on June 11, 1756 in Ripe, Sussex. Thomas and Mary had five children: John, Thomas, William, Ann and Robert. If this is the same Thomas Geal you are looking for, I have more information. I have data back to 1646. Please contact me at cymar@cablelan.net

I have already checked your Thomas and so far have not found the logic to make the link between West Chiltington area (West Sussex) and Ripe (East Sussex). However I would still like to explore ideas. Please contact me direct on chris@geal.freeserve.co.uk
