I am researching my husband's GEAKE relatives from Cornwall England.

John Mary GEAKE were the parents of his gr-gr grandmother Mary GEAKE b 1849 in Davidstow Cornwall. Mary married Edward Charles MANICOM abt 1868 and they had 3 children:
William Geake MANICOM b 1869, James, Elizabeth. Edward and Mary died in their mid 20's and their son James died abt age 22. The other 2 children were raised by their grandmother Mary Baker GEAKE who had been born abt 1811-13 in Otterham, aided by her unmarried daughter Jane GEAKE b 1851 in St Breward.

Any connections out there??

Hi! What info do you have so far on your GEAKE relatives? What part of Cornwall do they come from?

Dallas,

All we know at this stage is that two brothers (Geake) arrived in Australia reportedly from Cornwall. We have only just started to explore our family history when we happened across your message. We thought you may have had some info to enlighted us. If not thanks for your response. If we turn up anything more from our investigations will let you know.

Sorry I can't be of any help at this point...all the GEAKE ancestors/relatives we have, stayed in Cornwall as far as we know.
Good luck in your research!

Hello there

A fellow Geake here in the UK. My grandfather (Edward Percy Geake) was born in the Liskeard area of Cornwall in 1902 (- 1976). His father William was born in 1869 (- 1943) in the same area and was referred to as a yoeman. My grandfather's brother (can't remember his first name) was a colonel in the army and was killed in the 2nd world war,. My grandfather's cousin (can't remember his name either) was a Major General (3 star general) in the Indian Army

As you may be aware the GEAKE name is Cornish and apparently means either village idiot or a hedgerow!

I understand that there is a senator Robert Geake in the US. My brother is also called Robert

I think I have more in common with the former.

My grandmother, Iva Geake was born in Cornwall, England in 1900. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Pennsylvania, or New Jersey. She married Alfred Hendershot, not sure of the year, but they had 11 children. She passed away in 1968 or 1969. Unfortunatly, I have very little information on the rest of the family. No one seemed to keep track of anything--My father is one of the youngest in the family, and his surviving brothers and sisters really don't know anything about the family. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Andrew,

Good News! You are neither a village idiot or a hedgerow! We have been informed by a RR Geake (we think from the USA) that the name Geake appears in "A Handbook of Cornish Surnames" which suggests that the name originally meant "a builder of hedges", and that when he and his wife visited Cornwall in 1977 they discovered that Cornish hedges are not made out of growing shrubs as they expected but are constructed entirely out of earth and rocks.

So happy days!

We are in the early process of tracking our ancesters - who originated from Cornwall.

Are you going to try and trace your lineage? Where abouts in the UK are you from? We live in Melbourne Australia.

Keep in touch! We may be related! But only if your rich! - Sorry just a joke.

Hi Susan

We are also starting to trace our family history and believe it originates from Cornwall. We received an email from RR Geake in the US who has been collecting his family history for quite a while and he gave us some good leads - his email address is RRGeake@aol.com

I am sure he would be willing to help if he can.

Let us know how you go. Good luck.

If we find anything that may help we will let you know.
