As far as I've been able to decipher, Mary GEAKE was bpt Feb 4 1700 in Lawhitton, d/o William GEAKE & Joan HORE who married May 21 1695 in same.
They bad 5 children all baptised in Lawhitton -- Grace - Oct 20 1696 Margery - Dec 26 1698 Mary - Feb 4 1700 Joan - Jan 4 1702 Robert - Jan 15 1705
I have managed to follow Mary, Joan and Robert but can find nothing else for Grace or Margery.
Mary GEAKE and Walter WESTLAKE also had a son John who married an Elizabeth GARTRELL on Mar 26 1768 -- I've often wondered if she was related to Edward GARTRELL the husband of Joan WESTLAKE?
I hope this helps :o)

That's an interesting dilemma and I see that I have Mary GEAKE and Thomas WEBB married with all those children but I had no idea who Mary's parents were ...
A Mary GEAKE did indeed marry William CLOGG on May 24 1819 in St Germans ... their son Wm CLOGG was born Apr 2 1820 and baptised May 7 1820 in St Paul, Deptford, Kent but buried Jun 28 1822 in St Germans. [Wm CLOGG Sr is listed as resident of Deptford, Kent at his marriage to Mary in 1819]
I wish I could find more info on this Mary GEAKE ... maybe her husband Wm CLOGG died young and she remarried to your Thomas WEBB although I can find no record of that at all.
The marriage I have for Catherine GEAKE was given to me many years ago by someone whom I've lost touch with and made no notes for so it may definitely be incorrect since you have other info ...
Very interesting!

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. My research has turned up that Mary Geake and Walter Westlake's daughter, Joan Gertrude Westlake, married Edward Gartrell and had twelve children, one dying in infancy. They had a son John, born 8 Dec 1764 in Lezant. I have no record of a marriage for him. They also had a son, Joseph born in Stoke Climsland 28 Dec 1778 died in Braddock on 23 Oct 1847, who married in Short Hill on 30 Mar 1802 another Mary Geake b. 1781. I have not yet tried to research her. Edward and Joan (Westlake) Gertrell also had a daughter, Elizabeth, born in Linkinhorne on 11 Aug 1771, who married John Clarke and had in about 1800 a daughter, Maria, who married George Horwood, whose granddaughter, Emma Horwood James, came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and married John Stewart Hall. John and Emma were my great grandparents.

Mary GEAKE wife of Joseph GARTRELL was bpt Jul 22 1781 in Lawhitton the d/o Elias GEAKE & Margery KETTER.
So far, Elias GEAKE does NOT connect to any of the other GEAKES in my database research! His wife was born in Milton Abbot Devon ...
Elizabeth's sister Mary married an Edward CLARKE - wonder if he was related to John?
Joseph and Mary were married in South Hill not Short Hill ~ possibly a typo :o)
Can you email me off-line to give me an idea of some of the dates for the children of Elizabeth GARTRELL and George HORWOOD?
Many thanks!

Will contact OPC to advise them of misspelt surname. I only have one of the 7 children (of Ursula Palmer & Edward Geake) having Palmer as a middle name, being William Palmer Geake. Whis is the other one? Thank you for the info re parents of Ursula. Jenny

Suddenly there has been a flurry of posts and it has taken me a while to work out who was answering what & to whom.
My dilemma regarding Edmund Webb's (1830-1899) mother has now been resolved after a diligent few months. His parents were definately Thomas Webb & Mary GEAKE (contrary to published information). Thomas died in UK in 1832, following which Mary GEAKE immigrated to Australia in 1847 with her children Edmund, Catherine & Mary Geake Webb. The family settled in Bathurst, New South Wales where Mother (Mary Geake) had a sister Catherine GEAKE who had already immigrated and married in Australia to a John Jones. Mother, Mary died soon after (1849). Catherine & John Jones had no children but were incredibly close to their nephew, to the extent that John Jones left a fair bit of his estate to Edmund. John Jones also gave Edmund his first job in Bathurst. Catherine GEAKE (aunt) and Edmund worked together on a number of philanthropic type activities including orphanages. Catherine Jones (nee GEAKE) (aunt) died in 1872. When Edmund Webb died in 1899 the informant for the death put down his aunt as his mother. Hence the incorrect information that has been inadvertently published regarding Edmund Webb's mother.
So, in summary, I have traced a number of children of Thomas Geake & Peggy Langmead immigrating to Australia (via immigration & shipping records etc), and settling generally around the Bathurst, Orange area, being:
Mary Geake 1796 - d. 1849(New South Wales, Australia). Married Thomas Webb. 3 of their children married Geakes, Lanes & Toms.
Catherine Geake 1801 - d. 1872 (New South Wales, Australia). Married John Jones. No children
Elizabeth "Betsy" Geake 1803 - d 1865 (New South Wales, Australia. Married Richard Lane. A number of this couple's children married Geake & Lane cousins in New South Wales - many many people with Geake Lane name permutations & combinations.
John Geake 1804 - d. 1884 (Victoria, Australia)
BUT I do like your thought process regarding Mary Geake. I have not, to date, actually found confirming evidence of a Mary Geake & Thomas Webb actually marrying. Their first child was Thomas Geake WEbb b. 1827. This info regarding William Clogg is a really good clue - Perhaps we are looking in the wrong place for a marriage between Thomas WEBB & a Mary CLOGG (widow)! The children I have are all born in Liskeard, Cornwall. I know the boys went to school at Saltash where there were Webb relatives. The Webb family also hung out at St Mellion, St Germans.
I will start a new search with your information and see where I get to Jenny

It was Elizabeth Gartrell Clarke's daughter, Maria Clarke, who married George Horwood. They had seven children: Lucy, Maria, Emma, George, Richard, William, Sarah, and Martha. William and Sarah died in early childhood. I would be happy to send you the information I have about the others, but I do not seem to have your email address.
