I am interested in your reference to your grandfather with the last name of Steer.

From what I understand my Grandfathers family is from Devon and his name was Victor Valencia Boyes Steer born
December 31, 1903. He married Freda Ellen Millie Rogers who was born on June 18, 2003. They immigrated to Australia shortly after they were married.

The only other information I have is that his father was an Editor and worked at the Madras Times in India when my grandfather was born.

Any chance that they were related?

Your Grandfather's name/names might possibly mean that he is related to the Seer family that I have been interested in.

I think his Grandfather might well have been Charles Boyes Steer b 1836 and d. 1901) ( A Capt. in the Royal Scots and later a stockbroker in London) whose father Charles Steer was a Judge in India. He had a son called Valentia Steer b. 1880 and died 1936 who was a journalist. Valentia married in 1901 either to Ellen Maria Mortimer or Evelyn Mary Edwards in the Strand , London.

I wonder if Victor Valencia/Valentia Boyes Steer born 1903 might have been Valentia Steer's son.

If he is I have a wealth of information on this family which may be of interest to you.

They came from South Yorkshire/ Derbyshire area and later went to London and were successful merchants in the silk trade. The next generation went out to India either in the Indian army or in the civil service. They later came back to England. Some retired to Devon/Cornwall while others lived in London and were in business or Stockbrokers.

I have no information on them from Valentia Steer onwards.

I think Valentia may have had a brother called Bertram Steer born 1881. There is also a Boyes D'Arcy V.Steer born 1905 who I have yet to place who again might be a son of Valentia but this also is only conjecture.

I hope the above might be of interest to you. If it is please do email on my own email address if you have any further questions.

Regards,

William Highley
