Joseph V. Gdaniec Husband, Dad, Dzia Dzia Joseph V. Gdaniec, 77, of Millcreek, died peacefully at home, Friday, October 10, 2008, after an extended illness. Born in Erie, February 19, 1931, he was a son of the late Joseph W. and Victoria (Kowalski) Gdaniec.
He was a 1949 graduate of Cathedral Prep, and a 1953 graduate of Gannon College. He earned a masters degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Joseph served in the U.S. Army, and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. On November 24, 1955 he married Catherine M. Marz, with whom he celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary in 2005. He was employed by the Erie School District as a teacher and administrator, retiring in 1990 after 35 years of service. He belonged to the Erie Maennerchor Club, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Erie County Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother William E. Gdaniec. Joseph is survived by his wife of 52 years, Catherine M. (Marz) Gdaniec; four sons, Joseph M. Gdaniec, wife Karen, of Cary, N.C., Robert Gdaniec of Schenectady, N.Y., Thomas Gdaniec, wife Shannon, of Pittsburgh, Pa. and William Gdaniec, wife Sharon, of Erie; a daughter, Sheryl Bennett, of Erie; a sister, Gertrude Babiarz, of California; four grandchildren, Sarah, Jeremy and Joseph C. Gdaniec and Michael Bennett. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Friends are invited to call at the Brugger Home for Funerals, LLP, 1595 W. 38th Street at Greengarden Blvd., on Monday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and may attend a prayer service there on Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. George Church at 10:45 a.m. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cathedral Prep, 225 W. 9th Street, Erie, PA 16501, Gannon University, 109 University Square, Erie, PA 16541, or St. George Church, 5145 Peach Street, Erie, PA 16509.
