I am looking for a Mary Elizabeth Gazaway that married Jim or James Harris. He was born in some part of Georgia. Do not know where she was from. They had 7 sons and 3 daughters. sons names are Houston, Austin,Lucius, Monroe, Andrew, Charley ( my line) Walter, and the girls are Edna, Arilla, another one. I am told he was a United States Marshal but do not know what state. Also that he served in the Civil War on the Union Side but not sure of what state. I am told He and Mary divorced and do not know who either of them married again or if they did. If anyone can tie into this family please e-mail me at Howellsii@aol.com thanks you rgh

Great News!!
Finally a name I can work with.
I found Mary E. Gazaway in a newspaper article about my wife's family.
Mary E. Gazaway was the daughter of David P. Gazaway and Margaret A. Gazaway. She is listed in the 1880 Census as being 19 years old being born near Redwine's Cove area, Dalton, GA. .
Brothers and sisters: 1880 Census
Alfred J. Gazaway, age 17
William T. Gazaway, age 12 twins
Lela V. Gazaway, age 12 "
Melissa Rose Gazaway, age 8
James A. Gazaway, age 6
Sarah Emma Gazaway, age 5
Henry Marvel Gazaway, age 2
Viola (?) Gazaway,age 11-12 mos.

Children born after 1880 Census:

Twins: Allen and Andy Gazaway.
Allen Gazaway was my wife's Grandfather.
Family records state that Mary E. married Mr. Harris

I have a book titled "Genealogical History of the Gassaway Family." In it I found at least some of the info you are looking for. It states that she was born in 1790 in North Carolina and died in 1862 in Habersham County, Georgia. She married William Taylor (1789-1867), son of Theophilus Taylor (1759-1845). William is burried in Carnes Creek Cemetery in Habersham County. They had twelve children (Caleb, John, Spencer, Millie, Matilda, Jack, Jeremiah, Wolford, Mary, William, Tom and Steve).
The contributor writes the following: "Frances Gassaway and her husband, William Taylor, moved to Franklin County, Georgia. they subsequently were residents of Habersham and Toccoa counties, Georgia. Their son Steve was blind from birth."
The contributor's name was Meoldy Ruth (Conner) Faust, dated June 29, 1983, in Windber, PA.
My guess is that you are trying to get back further than her. Unfortunately, Frances' line doesn't identify her parents. I can tell you that another Gassaway, James Jr. lived at approximately the right time and location to be her father. He was born 4/19/1757 and died 12/10/1839. He had 7 children, one of which (James III)was born around 1790 in S.C. However, Frances is not listed as one of his children. If by chance he is Frances father, then I can trace the line all the way back to Thomas Gassaway, who was born around 1600 in London, England. His son, Nicholas, came to Maryland in 1650.
I hope this info helps.

I have the following information in a book on the Gassaway family.
Berry Gazzaway (1818-1886) and his wife Mary Stone (1818-1865) are both buried in the Swamp Creek Cemetery, Dalton Georgia.
Berry's father was probably Nicholas Gassaway, son of James Gassaway, son of Nicholas, son of John, son of Col. Nicholas, son of Thomas Gassaway, who was born around 1600 in London England. (Col. Nicholas came to Maryland in 1650).
Berry had 5 children (David Prichard, Mary O., Rhoda Lonsbay, William John D., and Elsberry Almarine (my great, great grandfather).
David Prichard, in turn, had 14 children, including 3 sets of twins (one of which, Allen Amberine, I gathered from one of you other responses is your wife's grandfather). Interestingly, the article you referred to omitted two of David's children, Andrew Jackson Gazzaway and Elsberry Gazzaway (who was killed by a falling tree at age 8). Viola Gazzaway, the child you had indicated with a question mark, died as an infant in 1880.
You probably already know that Allen married Timey Redwine, and they had 10 children.
If you would like any other information, please let me know.

Thank you so much for all the information. Stephen Taylor, who was born blind was my ggg-grandfather. I have not started any research on Frances Gassaway as of yet. The name is so unusual, I would venture to say that James probably was her father if the dates fit. I am interested in more information on this line for future reference and help in proving her connection to James Gassaway. Many thanks.
Regards,
Kathy
