Seeking information on the Yuhascik family, do you have any on George? The family you might be looking for is the "Gaydosh" family? I have Gaydosh's in my family and they were from South Fork, PA, do you think there is a connection since it is so close to Johnstown?

Wendy, George Gaydos (or per his grave stone Juraj Gajdos) was killed in Bethelem steel 6/8/1908. I do not know of any relatives in South Fork so to speak. I know the name was not really Gaydos. I do not know if it was Gaydosh, or just Gajdos. However, according to his marriage certificate that he did not fill out (he did not write nor read) it was filled out for him by the Rev Horvath. The marriage took place at St Stephans Catholic Church in Johnstown and the Rev. spelled his name as "Hajdos". So as you can see I am confused on the exact spelling. I do not know if he had siblings living in Johnstown or the surrounding areas. I am still researching this information. Thank you for your interest. If you have anything to add, please let me know. Sincerely Jane

Thanks for the reply, I found in my research the spellings of surnames changed when they entered the US. Adding an h to the end of the orginal spelling of Gaydos is possible. Did you check the Ebensburg, PA Hall of Records for his application of his intent to become a citizen, that might provide more information? I do not know anything about the Gaydosh that married my cousin, Julie is still alive, she's 92, I will ask her if I see her this summer. Good luck in your search!

Wendy, he never did apply for citizenship, he died in 1908 and no application was ever found. His wife ( my greatgrandmother) Elizabeth remarried to Yuhaschik, they lived on Virginia Avenue in Johnstown. She had one child with him, the childs name was Harry. Born 1914. Do you have the name of the city where your Gaydosh were from in Europe? What year did they come over? jane

Hi Jane,

I am not sure where my cousins husband was from, I think the name Gaydos is Slavish (Austrian-Hungarian Empire). I will be back in Cambria County at the beginning of August for a family reunion, I can ask at that time. In addition, I will be spending some time in the hall of records. From the best of my recollection Julia Shrader married her husband in 1935. Have you tried the Ellis Island records for his information when he entered into the US? Or Baltimore? I think it's a common name so there might be a lot of them. Also, if he was killed in an accident the steel mills might still have his paperwork.

What was the first name of the Yuhashick person Elizabeth married? That name is also in my family...but spelled Jozefczyk...which is pronounced You fetch chick; here we go with the surname spelling changes. :)

If I find out anything during my visit I will let you know.

Wendy

Wendy, how did you do at your family reunion. I looked at the death registration on Michael Yuhascik, they have it spelled Juhascik He did have brother, but the paperwork is at home. Do you live close to Johnstown? I live in NY and I usually go to Johnstown 2x's a year. Not sure if I am going this fall. Let me know how you made out. Also, Elizabeth and Michael had a one son, his name was Harry. He married a gal named Helen, according to hearsay their son was a catholic priest. Looking forward to hearing from you. Jane

My grandfather and father's name is Joseph Micheal Gaydos. I know my great grandmother lived in Pennsylvania and only spoke slovic. My grandfather had a brother with the first name Micheal who was MIA in WW2 when his plane was lost over the Pacific. I am sure the Micheal Gaydos' are related somehow.

My grandfather's brother was Michael Gaydos (b:1893) moved from Johnstown, PA to Ohio where he lived with his children until his death in the mid 1980's. He had 5 children, they all remained in Ohio except one son who moved to California. He had two son's,neither were named Michael. My grandfather's father was named Juraj(George B:1860), he settled in Johnstown in 1892, he died in 1908 in Bethelem Steel Plant of a terrible accident. I have not found his siblings at this point, his burial name is listed as Gajdos.
