My maiden name was Gaydos, I was born in Chicago. The old county spelling was Gajdosh from Yugoslavia. My Grandfather's name was Peter and had 7 kids in Chicago, all are deceased now except for their children, which I know my first cousins and am trying to get to know my second cousins. I now live in Florida and the rest of the family is scattered all over. I have one Aunt though marriage that is the only one left with a little of the family history. My name is Geri, really Geraldine, but I hate that name. Do not know just how common Gaydos was in the old country, but my father told my HIS father changed the name from Gajdosh to Gajdos to Gaydos. You knows, maybe there are more of us out there. I do not know if my Grandfather had any brothers. Good luck in your search.
Geri

What was language of your ancestor Vaclav? Did he considered himself Bohemian? The first name Vaclav to me does suggest that the ancestor was from present Czech Republic.

Begin a methodical backwards search beginning with yourself collecting documentation on each generation. You need a precise place of birth which needs to be found in the ancestor's US documents.

You're welcome.
The English Y is a J in Slovak or Czech.
Your ancestor went for pronouncation instead of correct Czech spelling.
He would have come thru Ellis Island or any other port with his "Czech" name. The manifests were written at the port of departure from a document that our ancestor presented to the shipping clerk.

Is this your ancestor's NY EI arrival manifest?

Did Jim Vaclav GAYDOS marry Annie VACLAVIK in USA?
If yes than their church marriage record should have a place of birth. Their children's church baptismal record should have parents place of birth.

Gajdos, Vaclav 33 1861 1894 [Vaclav is listed a widower. No notation that Anna is his wife.
Gajdos, Anna 26 1868 1894
Both of them from Moravia but still present Czech Republic going to Gonzales, Ten.

If Vaclav and Anna were married in "old country" than possible from same village or within 10 miles radius from each other.

Possible that Vaclav's draft registration form could have his place of birth. If he was naturalized citizen than his intent & petition will have a place of birth.

No relation.
Click on my name to see how much I like to help others with their research.

Did he marry Anna VACLAVIK in US? If yes than the church marriage record should have a place of birth.

No W in Czech alphabet but WACLAVIK would have a much closer pronounciation to VACLAVIK.

picked out several that arr. NY Ellis Island that I think the locations are in CZ.
Waclawik, Bohumil Polna, Austria 18 1895 1913
Vaclavik, Anastazia Hrabesin, Bohemia 18 1895 1913
Vaclavik, Barbora Strakonice 18 1886 1904
Vaclavik, Bohumil Opatovice 21 1881 1902
Vaclavik, Inocencie Lipnik, Moravia 23 1884 1907
