Hi,
I have a ggg grandmother who was Nancy Gay. She is suppose to be from Opelousas. She married William Hunt Irion first and later a Cartwright. She lived her final years in the area of Conroe, TX. Could there be a connection?

Hi, I'm looking for people researching this family. I have just returned from a trip to France and in particular Thones, France where Jean Gay's family originated. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. It is on the Swiss border and the mountains are georgeous. Someone I met through the internet met us and took us around the area for a whole day and I even met a Mr. and Mrs. Noel Gay who still live in the area of the Gay family land. This guy also gave me pedigree charts dating back to the 1500's if you are interested contact me.

What a wonderful trip that must have been to France and being able to meet someone from your Gay family!

I am curious as to who Jean Gay's children were. There were at least three or more apparently different Gay families in Louisiana who do not appear to be related to each other, as far as I can tell. Some of these apparently unrelated Gay families were in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana area within a ten year period of time or less in the early 1800's.

Do you have a listing of Jean Gay's children, as far as you have been able to find? Do you know approx. when your Gay family went to Louisiana or when they went to America from France?

I have information on the Jean Gay's children. I will have to send it to you on the weekend. The information is not fresh in my mind and I will have to look it up. Yes there is more than one Gay family that came to Louisiana. One family came from the Georgia area if I remember correctly. I will post the info this weekend.

This is a very old post, but I would be interested in what you have since discovered about the Gay family. Nancy Gay Irion Cartwright is my 4xg grandmother. Which of her children are you related to? Mary Ann Irion Hooker was my 3xg grandmother.

Hi, Pam

I am descended through Rebecca Hunt (Irion) Griffith to Maud Virginia (Griffith)Talley to Anna Irion (Talley) Robinson to George Samuel Robinson Jr. so 5th generation grandparent. I am still trying to track down where the letters are kept. I was hoping an archive somewhere.

Hi Charla,

Is that Rebecca Hunt Irion, b. 18 Feb 1833? I am descended from her sister, Mary Ann Irion, b. 23 Feb 1834. They were children of Nancy Gay Irion Cartwright and William Hunt Irion. Mary Ann m. William C. Hooker, and their daughter Maud m. Judson Berry Dacus, and their daughter Lizzie Erla Dacus m. William C. Whitehead and their daughter Anita married George H. Roper and their son William m. Sally Cockrell and I am their eldest daughter. I think you have also corresponded with my brother Bill.

Btw, I just found in the Texas muster rolls that William Irion joined the Navy as Ship's Steward aboard S. S. Zavala in 3 July 1840. I suspect that this accounts for his disappearance from the family. He was declared dead in 1841 and reappeared later but his wife had remarried. The muster rolls begin at 1838. Perhaps he went AWOL from the San Jacinto battle and jumped a ship at LaPorte in 1836 and returned from a voyage to enlist on the Zavala in 1840. See the record at:
