Looking for Information on Gay Family from Laurens County, Georgia
I'm looking for any family information on Mary Gay born in 1851? and died October 20, 1936. I have only found little information on Mary from what was on the death cert.. I learned that she had 8 children and only 7 survived by 1900, and that my 2nd great grandmother was Jennie Gay Conner, and she had a sister named Almeaid Gay Lowery, and James Ivy Gay. I heard that my grandmother had a sister named Julie, Eloise and a brother named Jake. But have found no evidence to be 100 percent right. Mary was born in Laurens County, Georgia, and mother's name was Mary Gay who also was born in Laurens County, Georgia. On the death cert it has a middle name or something that was crossed out on Mary and her mother. Mary was buried in McDaniel's cemetery and I have not found any link to anybody in the Cemetery. Mary was a widow at the time of her death, but I'm unable to find any information of who she might of married or who was the father of Jennie. I have not found any mention yet. I was just recently contacted by a another family member that found me, saying that Mary might of been wedlock. I know that in Jennie or Janette or maybe Cornelia Jane Conner my Grandmother was given to Bill Faulk Because Mary could not afford to keep her. Jennie was living in Rentz, Georgia when she died. In another thread someone told me that these names sound familiar, and that the Other Gay Families, and other family would help each other out. 1900 Mary was living in Pinetucky district 343 living with 3 daughters, one named Sarah A., Elizabeth Gay, Nancy E. I come to think that Sarah is Almeaid, because same birth year and month. 1910 Mary and Almeaid were living in Cadwell, Georgia next door to her daughter Jennie Conner and family. Mary was single in 1900 and 1910, and when I tried to find a 1920 census, I could not find Mary. In 1930, Mary was living in Burch, Georgia with her daughter Almeaid, and her 3 kids. Almeaid married a guy named Isom White, then he died in the 1920's, her children was Alvin, Ella, and Jo. Alvin White is the name of the informant on Mary Gay death cert. and I am having problems tracking Almeaid Gay Lowery, 2nd husband, or if Lowery is maybe her father's last name. I can't find Alvin Gay or White track, in 1940 the census has him down as Gay. If anybody knows anything about this family please contact me. I would like to find more information on all of these people, if possible. Also would like to know how, they are connected to the other Gay families in Laurens County, Georgia or If they are Indian. Thank you for taking time to read this. if you need further info I'll try my best to get to you. Dawn

Re: Looking for Information on Gay Family from Laurens County, Georgia
I'm not related, but I thought that I would see if I could find anything...
Can you please tell me what this means? "I know that in Jennie or Janette or maybe Cornelia Jane Conner my Grandmother was given to Bill Faulk Because Mary could not afford to keep her."
There's a lot to go through in your message, so I'm trying to break it down first.

Re: Looking for Information on Gay Family from Laurens County, Georgia
Thank you for your help. I will start off Mary Gay is my 3rd great grandmother and having a hard time finding her children besides 2nd great grandmother Jennie she went by, but I have a letter from my great Grandmother Idella, different family line. Writing genealogy for my Grandma Maurine who was adopted. In the letter it is stating that Jennie name is Janeatte Gay Conner. Jennie married name is Conner, Maiden is Gay. Jennie was born March 20, 1874. I have notes from another family member that written genealogy notes before she passed, She was doing genealogy on The Conner's, and she wrote Mrs. Cornelia Jane Conner born March 20, 1877. I'm not sure if this is suppose to be some one else, then Jennie or not, and the years are off. But on Jennie Death cert. they have 1868 that she was born, and I found census from the 1900, 1910, and 1930 and they put her birthday around 1874-1880. So this was one possible to narrow the dates. Jennie was given up to be raised by William "Bill" Faulk, Because Jennie's mother Mary Gay could not afford to raise her. I hope this breaks some of it down.
Mary Gay, had 8 Children
1-Jennie Gay born 1868-1880 2-James Ivy Gay born 1 September 1871 3-Almeaid Gay her name might of been Sara A Gay born 1892 on the 1900 census. But death Cert. has her down born September 21, 1884. Supposedly the other children names I have, I am unable to locate. 4-Jake Gay? 5-Eloise Gay? 6-Julie Gay? 7-??? 8-???
Mary Gay Born 1851-1852, She died 20 October 1936 in Burch, Georgia. She supposedly was born in Laurens County, GA Her mother's name is Mary Gay. You see where it get's tricky, Mary Gay born 1851 is buried in McDaniel's cemetery and there are a few other Gay family members buried there too. I'm not sure who is buried next to her if husband or not; Just a month ago I found a relative that was related to Mary Gay. He informed me that Mary's children took the last name of their mother, the Gay last name. He wasn't sure if we could find her husband, because what he got from his dad or granddad is they believed she was wedlock? I'm not exactly sure, and I know in the 1900, 1910 census it has Mary as single. but in 1930 census, she's a widow. So I am confuse to who she married or who are the father's of the children.
I have another post on McDaniel Cemetery, trying to find out who buried in that cemetery, and if they were related to Mary Gay. I had a response, telling me the families took care of each other and that might the Gay's that Mary is related that lived in Pinetucky District. The 1900 Census that I found Mary Gay in the Pinetucky district, that lead me thinking is was related to them or married to one of them. But some of my theories didn't work out.
Also I've been having a hard time getting past the 1900's. With everybody name is about the same, and on the census, I cannot locate Jennie, or James Ivy with Mary in the household. More less find any of the other childrens names that I listed above. If you have any thoughts or comments I would sure appreciate it. Thank you again.

OK - there's lots to go over! It will take me a little bit of time to sort this out. :)
A question that comes to mind: What is the source for the names Jake, Eloise, and Julie?

Re: Looking for Information on Gay Family from Laurens County, Georgia
One little possibility I found re: Almeaida: There's a marriage license for Allie Gay and Hayden Lowrey on February 7, 1897 in Laurens County. Maybe Allie = Almeaida...?
Source: FamilySearch.org
UPDATE: Alie Lowry is shown in the 1900 US Census as having a birth date of Feb 1875, so this does not fit with Almeaida's birth month/year. :(

Re: Looking for Information on Gay Family from Laurens County, Georgia
Have you contacted the cemetery where Mary Gay is buried? You should ask who owned the plot, when they bought it, and who else is buried in the same plot.
There could be burials there that have no headstones.
I found my great-great-grandmother this way. I didn't even know she was buried in the same grave.

Re: Looking for Information on Gay Family from Laurens County, Georgia
Shirley Anne Conner Jones was researching the Conner's a long time ago, passed the information on to her Uncle's son in the mid 1980s.
Shirley is Emmett Conner daughter. And Emmett is the oldest son of Jennie Gay and Andrew Jackson Conner. There was 6 boys that Jennie had. 1- Emmett 2- Theodore 3- John Vernon 4- Stewart 5- Andrew 6- Cleo
Shirley, had written on a paper of birthdays of Jennie Gay and Andrew Jackson children. On the sheet it has Jack's sisters name, and has written on it that Mary Gay is Jennie mother. It also has written on it that her brothers and sisters were Jim, Almeaid, Julie, Eloise and Jake Gay. On that sheet is where Mary Gay given up Jennie, to William Faulk.
I have the sheet posted on my tree, and it's a public tree. I got these notes from Cathy Martin, where she got it from her family. Cathy family got the information from Shirley Conner Jones.
Cathy Martin is from John Vernon Conner family. Shirley passed away a couple of years ago, and Cathy wasnt sure if these were accurate. I wasn't sure if it was correct, or they changed their name or going by their Middle name. On the 1900 Mary Gay had 3 daughters living with her. Elizabeth, Nancy E, Sarah A. I think Sarah A is Almeaid, because the 1910 census they have Alvenia which should be Almeaid living with Mary Gay.
So im not exactly sure how to look at this, i was hoping somebody might reconignize the names and have a lead. So I just threw it out there. Sorry for confusion, and i do appreciate you helping out. Thank you again Dawn

Re: Looking for Information on Gay Family from Laurens County, Georgia
Re: the cemetery, you could try contacting local Dublin funeral homes to ask them. I also noticed that there's a McDaniel Monument company in the Yellow Pages that is listed under "Monuments," "Cemeteries," and "Funeral Directors."
Another thing you could research: order a copy of James Ivy Gay's Social Security Application. He should have indicated his parents on that (if he ever learned who his father was...?)
Have you looked into James B. Gay as a possible father? He's in the 1880 US Census in Pinetucky, Laurens County, Georgia. Wife is Mary E., one son is a James who is the right age, one daughter is Ella who could be "Elsie." [The note you quoted has Elsie, not Eloise...?] Jennie would be with her adoptive family, I assume. Almeaid wouldn't be born yet, and the others could have come later or could have already passed away...?
I'm just trying to brainstorm with all this...:)

Re: Looking for Information on Gay Family from Laurens County, Georgia
James B Gay, I researched it, he died October 28, 1882, He was part of the Land Lottery with Father Josiah Gay, brothers Hardy, Henry, Jacob and sister Mary Gay Grinstead. Mary E. Gay later I found is Mary E. Clements. All this I found in court records for the land law suit. I looked into the kids and they are not them. I found a relative to James Ivy Gay, and emailed him to see what he knew. I haven't heard back yet. I thought about the top one, calling the funeral homes; I just haven't got that far. Been trying to locate some living relatives of James, and Almeaid; I just found Almeaid Obituary and her son and daughter, working on finding her kids, kids. If that makes sense. Right now working on looking thru Laurens county, GA newspaper 1910-1911 and reading the history of Laurens County, to locate clues.
