After a long search I recently found my great great grandfather was William L. Gay, son of Richard Gay and grandson of Joshua Gay and Mary Bird of Early County, Georgia. I contacted the DAR and received the following reply regarding Joshua:

A search of our Patriot Index provided the information found below.

GAY, Joshua
Birth: NC 1764
Service: NC
Rank: Sol
Death: GA p 1830
Patriot Pensioned: No Widow Pensioned: No
Children Pensioned: No Heirs Pensioned: No
Spouse: (1) Mary Byrd

I have read many of the archived messages that expressed doubt that Joshua who married Mary Bird was the son of Thomas and Patience.

Any comments or additional information would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Cynthia, my ancestor is Seaborn W. Cowart from Early/Miller Co. GA, son of William David (went by David) Cowart b. 1802 and ? Gay. David lived next to Allen Gay in 1850 census, but his first wife (Gay) had died and he had married Harriett Durham in 1846. I know the Gays and Cowarts lived near each other in Emanuel Co. GA and, of course, Eleanor Cowart married Joshua Gay. Believe Eleanor was dau of Zachariah? Anyway, have you any idea who David's first wife, ? Gay was? I have been tracing my Cowart ancestors for about 3 years and feel fairly comfortable with them, except for Seaborn's mother. Seaborn 1st married an woman named Vessenia 1870 cenus (spelled Ven?ney) in 1860 census. Have you ever heard of that name? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dorothea

Cynthia, you were kind to respond. I didn't have Henrietta's name and am happy to have that. Please let me hear from you if you find anything else. I appreciate it. Dorothea

It has been a long time but I have additional information but not the name of Joshua Gay's daughter who was born about 1804. Joshua Gay signed the deed to Zachariah Cowart in 1824 for land in Early County.
