I show one born 1875-76, immigrated to Berwick, CT, in 1901. Other relatives stopped in New Milford, CT. Some then went on to Chicago, IL or PA. One from PA then resettled in NJ. Possible this Frank stopped Chicago then went on to MI, many did. He can from Widelka near Rzesow. I recommend you get a copy of his death certficate then try contacting the cemetary, funeral director and looking his up in the 1920 census. You can probably find his arrival record in NY also.

I was wondering if this Frank had a brother name Jacob? He was born on the 10th or the 11th of July 1878 in Rzeszow, Poland to a Martin Gawel Maria Rzasa. Any info would help. Thanks,
Jane

Frank's brother Jacob Gawel

Jane, I don't know if Frank had a brother Jacob. This Frank came from Widelka which is a small village near Rzesow. Because it was common to state the largest city nearby as "home" it is possible that Gawels from Widelka, Przewrotne, Kolbusawa could have said they were from Rzesow. Their baptismals would be in those church archives also. I have found a Jacob Gawel, born 1821 in House 89 in Widelka who in 1843 married an Ewa born 1827 in House 159 of that village. I also show names like Mary Rakoczy and Tomasz Wrzas in that village. With the handwriting involved and the fact that the people who's names we are dealing with often couldn't read or write, they could match the name you are seeking. I also show a Jacob Gawel of House 288 in Przewrotne married to a Marianna the daughter of Valentine Gul Frances Frea having two sons named Canegandie born 6JAN1858 Larentius born 7AUG1864. Since these are Latin versions, in Polish they would be the male version of Kunagunda Wawrzyniec. Kunagunda is also seen as Kinga and while it is common to see odd (at least to me) female versions of male names like Stanislawa, Wladyslawa, Boleslawa, Ceslawa, Balbina, etc., I don't know of another the opposite way around. Sorry, I couldn't be of more help. My research gaps where the LDS records only go up to 1860 (I understand there was a 100 year privacy rule in effect when they were copied much like some states rules on birth certificates and the Federal Census) and the trace back in time stops with the immigration from Austrian Poland (Galicia) in the late 1890's. There are Gawels living in Rzesow today with e-mail addresses. I've found that Polish-American Polish (and mine is very limited) is also a bit like Latin is to Italian...you did say any info....

Thanks you so much I will check into what you have told me. It may help somewhat with my research on the family. I keep running into a wall and maybe this might put a hole in that wall. Thanks again.

Hello, Diane I realize yours is an old posting, but I think I'm related to the Gavel line you are looking for. My father in law Stanley Gavel had parents named Frank and Catherine Sczal Gavel. I know the spelling was originally Gawel. Please feel free to contact me directly: Happyappy@4netmail.com EGavel
