Thank you so much for the legend. They are my ancestors. I am LaVonne Gaw
in Memphis TN. I haven't gone back beyond the three brothers. I am in Robert Gaw's line. I would be willing to share information. I believe I've seen your posts before. I haven't been working the line in a long time but need to get started
again. I can be reached at lgaw@elvis.com

I'm descended from John Gaw on my mother's side. The genealogy listed with the document I'm forwarding lists Joseph Miles Gaw as son of Barbara Rinker and Robert Gaw. They had a son named Joseph born in the year stated, but John Gaw and Catharine Bow had a son name Joseph Miles Gaw born abt 1803 who is my ancestor. In an e-mail to you, I'm enclosing the legend as a document, originally posted on Ancestry.com.
Karen

I believe we may have been in touch once before about the three Gaw brothers. I have the legend about Sarah Miles. To lend some credence to the legend, my mother's great grandmother, Catherine Gaw's father was Joseph MILES Gaw.
Thanks for the additional information that you've included below. I appreciated learning more about the Robert Gaw side of the family.
By a coincidence, my second husband is a Miles, so it is now my last name.

Ah! So we are related. It's nice to meet someone who is connected to John Gaw. I don't know what that makes us. hahaha.

By the way, I go by my middle name of Mark.

Below here I am providing the only information I have regarding the father and mother of Robert and John. I have a friend in Ireland who is doing a free search for me to find out more about them. If/when I gather more information I will be glad to pass it on to you.

"Robert Gaw was born in Enniskillen, Ireland, in 1764, and died in Woodstock, Virginia, Sept. 3, 1829.
His mother's maiden name was Sarah Miles. According to a family legend, Robert Gaw's father, age 10,
found a small child washed up on the Irish shore, the lone survivor of a shipwreck. only her name Sarah
Miles, beautifully embroidered on her petticoat, was known. He ( Robert's father) subsequently married
her when they were grown.
When Robert Gaw was seventeen, leaving his father and a sister in Ireland, he sailed for america with his two brothers.
In a short time he found his way to the Valley of Virginia and settled in Woostock, becoming a successful merchant of that town.
His store was located on the site of the present Gearing Hotel. Today if you visit the site it is now a drug
store.
In 1808 his brother, John Gaw (father of Mrs Midred Payne), sold to him the "Brubacher" farm when John
moved West to Missouri. The farm, renamed "Runnimede", was East of Woodstock, Virginia. This John Gaw and one of the Meems wre great friends, and Mr Meem later named a son John Gaw Meem. This namesake afterwards lived in a little house rented from Robert Gaw, and latter Robert Gaw willed the little to his housekeeper, "Kitty".
The next generation of Meems became prominent and wealthy men in Shenandoah Couny, Virginia."

I'm the great, great, great granddaughter of John Gaw, one of the three brothers who came from Enniskillen, Ireland. John left Woodstock, VA and moved to Missouri. My mother, who just passed away 2 years ago was the Great granddaughter of Catherine Gaw who married William McGiven and she has left a numerous progeny. The brothers line is not dead. wagmp67, do you have any information about the three brothers parents in Ireland?

That line of Gaw's moved into the area of Waynesboro, Va, where I was born. I'm the last of the Gaw's of this line.

She was born in 1823 - Died of fever in New Orleans in 1853. Father was Robert I believe. I have her journal, poems etc but know little more. Had two children who died young and all buried in Providence. Rather a tragic situation for husband as successful young sea captain. He remarried and settled in Liverpool. Love to know more about her family.

GAW surname in America

There are several groups of GAW's in America.
My ancestor John Gaw, Sr. was probably Scot or Irish and was in South Carolina when his son Thomas GAW was born in 1777 (Thomas m Nancy HOOD in 1799 and moved to TN). John Sr. fought in the RW, died by 1788 and his widow Violet m John Calhoun and moved to Indiana with her son John Gaw Jr b 1786. John GAW and Violet also had a daughter Mary b 1784 who m a STROUD and also moved to Indiana.
There were 3 GAW brothers who came over from Enniskillen, Ireland and settled in the Sheneadoah area of Virginia. They were there for a couple of generations but are not my family.
There was a GAW family in Maryland and Pennsylvania in the 1700's. There was a RW soldier among them, his name started with C. I don't know if they are related to my family or not.
There is also a group who came to America through Canada and they may be the family that settled in the Michigan area.
I would be willing to share info with anyone who in interested in the GAW surname. There was also a McGAW family in South Carolina the same time as my ancestor, a William and a John. If they are the same family as mine, the connection is much earlier than the mid-1700's; John GAW b 1786 and John McGaw b about 1784 have been "merged" by some researchers but are not the same person.
Good hunting and please let me know if I can be of help to you.

I have in my possession a handwritten copy of the will for a James Gaw, dated 1799. He mentions brothers Samuel and William Gaw, sister Sarah Gaw, and a nephew, also named James. He also mentions parents, but not by name. Will is from Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, but this document was delivered to his executors in Washington, County, PA. Does any of this match anyone's family?
(I am not a researcher of the Gaw surname, nor do I have any further data on the above, other than the details of this will.)

My ancestor is John Gaw who came from Eniskillen Ireland in the 1700's. He settled in Virginia with his brother Robert Gaw and later emigrated to Missouri. Apparently there was a 3rd brother named James, but I've found nothing about him. I'm sorry, but I know nothing about a Thomas J Gaw who was born in 1830 in Ireland. All the Gaws I know about descend from John and Robert and were well established with numerous children in Virginia and Missouri.

Hello Kevin,
You must be the son of Clyde Gaw of Columbus, IN. I am a friend of Clyde and Dorothy's and last fall I did some family research for both of them. I can't find out much about Eli Gaw but I did find censuses and military and marriage certificates. I found a little more about his wife, Amanda Jane Taylor Gaw, by researching her sister, Ida Bell Taylor. I have given Clyde what I could find.

He has mentioned you and we were able to see a picture of you and your wife on the internet when you both worked at a different car dealership there in Colorado.

I used to work with Dorothy at the Bakery years ago and was glad to be reacquainted with them in the past year.

I am still looking for info on the Gaw family but just can't find the connection linking Eli with some of the other Gaws in Indiana or if they are descended from the South Carolina Gaw family, which is heavily documented. If we only knew Eli's father's name.....

I will tell Clyde I heard from you. Nice to meet you.
My email address is capru20@yahoo.com Carolyn Pruett

I was re-elected President of the Monett Reunion (again!) and will be back 3d Sunday weekend September 2010. Hope we can hook up some time? Will be getting there on Fri and staying till Tues.

Go to Genforum.com/Gaw and look for Bobby Gaw Found!

I found what you were looking for under sos.mo.gov which has FREE Missouri Death Certificates on line. Get back to me if you have questions or need help?
I still have a Boydstun History for BF who moved to Rockwall, TX that I want to give you next time. Took it with me last year but didn't have time to stop by Seneca or Carthage as I had just had back surgery 4 days before Reunion. I'm okay now.
I'm still gawbuck@sbcglobal.net (changed from swbell.net to DSL a few years back).
Hope the information I found for your missing Bobby fills in a gap... let me know?

Your other Cousin in Texas!
Jean

Hi Jean,
This is what I know about the Gaws. I got a lot of information on an Ancestry.com post on 8/29/2006. Robert Gaw was born in Eniskillen, Ireland and had two brothers James and John. The three brothers emigrated in 1781 ? to the colonies when Robert was 17 yrs. There is a family legend about their mother Sarah. If you want, it let me know. I don't know if you can find the post on Ancestry anymore.

The brother James seems to have disappeared and I read somewhere that he may have gone to Australia. So far I've found nothing about James, but I haven't researched him.

Robert married Barbara Rinker, the daughter of Colonel Jacob Rinker. and remained in Woodstock, Shenandoah, Virginia area. Their children were: Mary Gaw b. 25 Apr 1799, John Gaw b. 8 Dec 1800, Elizabeth Gaw b. 24 Oct 1802, Sarah M Gaw b. 17 Aug 18054, Robert Gaw, Jr. b. 1806, Jacob R. Gaw b. 1808 and Rebecca Gaw b. May 1813, Joseph Gaw (no Birthdate).

John Gaw (Robert and James brother) is my ancestor. He married first Catharine Bow and their children were: Sarah Ann Gaw b. 29 Oct 1789, Mary Gaw b. 2 Oct 1793, Catherine Gaw b. 20 May 1796, Nanay Gaw b. 20 Jul 1798, Amelia Gaw b. 13 Feb 1800, John Robert Gaw b. 15 Jul 1802 and Joseph Miles Gaw b 8 Aug 1803.

When Catharine died in 1804, John Gaw married Mary/Polly Miller and their children were: William Gaw b. 17 Aug 1806, Elizabeth Gaw b. 27 Feb 1808, Jane Mary Gaw, b. 27 Mar 1810, Philip Miller Gaw b. 1 Nov 1811, Barbara Ann Gaw b. 1 Apr 1813, Amanda Gaw, b. 5 Oct 1817 and Rebecca Jane Gaw b. 11 Oct, 1822. John died in 1822 and his will may be found online on Ancestry.com "Knox Memorial".

I think the Philip Gaw you refer to is the son of John Gaw and Mary Miller. Only the John Gaw's lived in Missouri. They immigrated there in about 1817.
I've read quite a bit about the Robert Gaws in Virginia and never read anything about Barbara Rinker being married to someone named Gabriel Darlington.

I don't know anything about other Gaw lines in South Carolina.

I hope this helps you at least insofar as you can eliminate these Gaws from your line, since I've found no Thomas Gaw related to the three Irish brothers.
Karen Miles

The headstones for Francis Marion Gaw and Johney F. Gaw can be seen on FindAGrave.com
Both these headstones have broken in half over the years. The top half is leaning on what is left standing.

In your prior posting, you mentioned that the graves are one row over from Ezell Moore and her parents. This Ezell Moore you speak of is Eliza Jane Ezell Moore, wife of William Alexander Moore, my Great Grandparents. Those buried in the same row as Eliza and William are children and grandchildren. Eliza's parent are not buried at Good Hope Cemetery.

Thank you for the additional information of Francis Marion Gaw. Do you mind if it is added to his Memorial Page on FindAGrave.com? Please contact me off list to discuss.

Thank you,
Vicki
vbquillan@att.net

Francis Marion Gaw was born 31 Oct 1831 in Jackson Co. TN to John and Nancy Pridemore. John Gaw was son of Thomas Gaw (1777-1867) and Nancy Hood (1782-1839). John's wife Nancy divorced him in 1855 and by the 1860 TN Census his 2d wife is named Mary. He died shortly before 1863. A visit to Jackson/Overton County Tn in 1997 revealed new found cousins but also cemetery and land deed acquisitions.

It seems natural that Thomas Gaw was born in South Carolina and that a grandson would be named for "The Swamp Fox" Francis Marion. He married Sarah Hamilton in Tennessee and came to Texas shortly after 1870. He is buried at Parvin Community, Good Hope Cemetery, Denton Co. with his 17 year old son Johnny son. They are buried in the next row to Ezell Moore and her parents.
I later met 3 great grandsons of Francis Marion in East Texas and also learned who other family members were.
Francis Marion served in the Civil War with Gore's 13th Cavalry, I think, but I know it was an Overton Co. TN unit.
There were 9 Gaw men who served in Gore's 13th Cavalry.
I learned a lot of information by networking with other related researchers until we found we numbered 45 and growing.
If you have any questions, please contact me.

Re: GAW's from Shenandoah County Virginia

Karen,
Did you find where Barbara Rinker has been married to a Gabriel Darlington from 1785-1795 before she married Robert GAw in 1796?
I descend from 'the other Gaw line' in Greeneville, SC by the name of Thomas Gaw who married Nancy Hood, d/o Thomas Hood and Sarah Morgan of same. Thomas moved to White Co. TN and Thomas Gaw & wife Nancy followed.
I remember finding a Phillip Gaw in Boone Co. MO who was from Shenandoah Valley Virginia and should be a son of Robert & Barbara Rinker Gaw. Her father was a Colonel Jacob Rinker, a Hessian officer during the Revolutionary War.

My South Carolina line left Greenville County about 1812 and settled briefly in White Co. before finally putting down roots in Jackson/Overton/Putnam Counties TN.
I'm trying to determine whether my Thomas Gaw was related to John and Robert Gaw of Virginia? We have found where another John Gaw died in 1788 in Abbeville Co. SC who left a widow and son named John Gaw Junior.
I found a shipping manifest that Robert Gaw came from Eineskillen, Ireland in 1768? and then married in 1796-1797?
Thank you for your time.

Jean Gaw
