Possibly I can help. You should start in Waynesboro, VA and look up the family of Charles Gaw who lived in Waynesboro. I lived there a long time ago and used to have talks with him about the Gaw famlies, but he was quite elderly and could not remember.

My family is James & Jane Gaw who sailed from Belfast Ireland on 6/23/1819 and landed in Baltimore in 12/1819, both born in Ireland. 4-children sailed with them, and 4 more born in U.S. A.F. Gaw & John Gaw were children, still trying to trace the others. Jane Gaw died at 86, 6/5/1872 and James died at 56 in 1/16/1838.

Howard J. Gaw of Newport New VA was the son of A.F. Gaw

Let me know hat you find out.

Your Shenandoah Gaw Family line starts with Robert Gaw of Eineskilleen Ireland who imigrated to the Colonies and then married a Barbara Rinker, d/o Col Jacob Rinker, a possible Mercinary/Veteran of the Revolutionary War.
Barbara was first married to a Gabriel Darlington 1786-1796 before she divorced Gabriel to marry Robert Gaw. They had about 13 children with their first born in 1800.

I did quite a bit of research about 8-9 years ago to connect my Greenville Co. SC Thomas Gaw (1777-1867) to your Robert Gaw side of the early Colonial family tree of the "Southern Gaw's".

The son named John Gaw of Robert and Barbara Rinker Gaw later moved to Missouri where he died in 1822 with a wife and chil(ren). His Will is recorded in Howard Co. MO and Shenandoah Co. Virginia.
If you want to know more, feel free to contact me!

The John Gaw you refer to, who died in Howard co. Missouri in 1822 was Robert Gaw's brother, not his son. I believe Robert did have a son named John, however. My line comes from John Gaw (Robert's brother) who had two wives. The first named Catharine and the second named Mary Miller whom he married in Virginia in 1805. He had 5 children by Catharine and 7 by Mary. I have many records, wills, marriage records etc. which are good sources. There is a will of Robert's in existance which gives a lot of detail about his family including the names of all his children.

I just posted a reply about the John Gaw you claim was the son of Robert Gaw and Barbara Rinker. They did have a son named John, but not the John who died in Howard Co. Missouri in 1822. John Gaw was a brother to Robert Gaw and is mentioned in his will. My brother did a lot of research on this line including transcribing the original wills of John and Robert. My John Gaw ancestor married Catharine in Virginia and in 1805 married Mary Miller. I have a number of sources detailing these facts if you are interested.

Karen,
Did you find where Barbara Rinker has been married to a Gabriel Darlington from 1785-1795 before she married Robert GAw in 1796?
I descend from 'the other Gaw line' in Greeneville, SC by the name of Thomas Gaw who married Nancy Hood, d/o Thomas Hood and Sarah Morgan of same. Thomas moved to White Co. TN and Thomas Gaw & wife Nancy followed.
I remember finding a Phillip Gaw in Boone Co. MO who was from Shenandoah Valley Virginia and should be a son of Robert & Barbara Rinker Gaw. Her father was a Colonel Jacob Rinker, a Hessian officer during the Revolutionary War.

My South Carolina line left Greenville County about 1812 and settled briefly in White Co. before finally putting down roots in Jackson/Overton/Putnam Counties TN.
I'm trying to determine whether my Thomas Gaw was related to John and Robert Gaw of Virginia? We have found where another John Gaw died in 1788 in Abbeville Co. SC who left a widow and son named John Gaw Junior.
I found a shipping manifest that Robert Gaw came from Eineskillen, Ireland in 1768? and then married in 1796-1797?
Thank you for your time.

Hi Jean,
This is what I know about the Gaws. I got a lot of information on an Ancestry.com post on 8/29/2006. Robert Gaw was born in Eniskillen, Ireland and had two brothers James and John. The three brothers emigrated in 1781 ? to the colonies when Robert was 17 yrs. There is a family legend about their mother Sarah. If you want, it let me know. I don't know if you can find the post on Ancestry anymore.

The brother James seems to have disappeared and I read somewhere that he may have gone to Australia. So far I've found nothing about James, but I haven't researched him.

Robert married Barbara Rinker, the daughter of Colonel Jacob Rinker. and remained in Woodstock, Shenandoah, Virginia area. Their children were: Mary Gaw b. 25 Apr 1799, John Gaw b. 8 Dec 1800, Elizabeth Gaw b. 24 Oct 1802, Sarah M Gaw b. 17 Aug 18054, Robert Gaw, Jr. b. 1806, Jacob R. Gaw b. 1808 and Rebecca Gaw b. May 1813, Joseph Gaw (no Birthdate).

John Gaw (Robert and James brother) is my ancestor. He married first Catharine Bow and their children were: Sarah Ann Gaw b. 29 Oct 1789, Mary Gaw b. 2 Oct 1793, Catherine Gaw b. 20 May 1796, Nanay Gaw b. 20 Jul 1798, Amelia Gaw b. 13 Feb 1800, John Robert Gaw b. 15 Jul 1802 and Joseph Miles Gaw b 8 Aug 1803.

When Catharine died in 1804, John Gaw married Mary/Polly Miller and their children were: William Gaw b. 17 Aug 1806, Elizabeth Gaw b. 27 Feb 1808, Jane Mary Gaw, b. 27 Mar 1810, Philip Miller Gaw b. 1 Nov 1811, Barbara Ann Gaw b. 1 Apr 1813, Amanda Gaw, b. 5 Oct 1817 and Rebecca Jane Gaw b. 11 Oct, 1822. John died in 1822 and his will may be found online on Ancestry.com "Knox Memorial".

I think the Philip Gaw you refer to is the son of John Gaw and Mary Miller. Only the John Gaw's lived in Missouri. They immigrated there in about 1817.
I've read quite a bit about the Robert Gaws in Virginia and never read anything about Barbara Rinker being married to someone named Gabriel Darlington.

I don't know anything about other Gaw lines in South Carolina.

I hope this helps you at least insofar as you can eliminate these Gaws from your line, since I've found no Thomas Gaw related to the three Irish brothers.

See my post of today. Robert and Barbara Rinker Gaw did have a son named John. But the John Gaw who moved to Howard MO is the brother of Robert Gaw. See the list of his wives and children above
