GAW surname in America

Surnames: Gaw, Hood, Calhoun, Stroud, McGaw
There are several groups of GAW's in America.
My ancestor John Gaw, Sr. was probably Scot or Irish and was in South Carolina when his son Thomas GAW was born in 1777 (Thomas m Nancy HOOD in 1799 and moved to TN). John Sr. fought in the RW, died by 1788 and his widow Violet m John Calhoun and moved to Indiana with her son John Gaw Jr b 1786. John GAW and Violet also had a daughter Mary b 1784 who m a STROUD and also moved to Indiana.
There were 3 GAW brothers who came over from Enniskillen, Ireland and settled in the Sheneadoah area of Virginia. They were there for a couple of generations but are not my family.
There was a GAW family in Maryland and Pennsylvania in the 1700's. There was a RW soldier among them, his name started with C. I don't know if they are related to my family or not.
There is also a group who came to America through Canada and they may be the family that settled in the Michigan area.
I would be willing to share info with anyone who in interested in the GAW surname. There was also a McGAW family in South Carolina the same time as my ancestor, a William and a John. If they are the same family as mine, the connection is much earlier than the mid-1700's; John GAW b 1786 and John McGaw b about 1784 have been "merged" by some researchers but are not the same person.
Good hunting and please let me know if I can be of help to you.

Hi
My relative Capt Nathaniel C Harris born in Providence RI married a Julia S Gaw - I believe of Philadelphia. She was born in 1823 - Died of fever in New Orleans in 1853. Father was Robert I believe. I have her journal, poems etc but know little more. Had two children who died young and all buried in Providence. Rather a tragic situation for husband as successful young sea captain. He remarried and settled in Liverpool. Love to know more about her family.

The GAW family in Pennsylvania was in Phildelphia I think. They may relate to the family in Maryland. This is not my family so I have not researched it. Good hunting. I know one of them at least was a RW soldier, that might help.

I'm related to one of the three brothers that came to America from Enniskillen, Ireland. Robert Gaw was my great great great great grandfather. He is buried in Woodstock, VA. That line of Gaw's moved into the area of Waynesboro, Va, where I was born. I'm the last of the Gaw's of this line.

Ah! So we are related. It's nice to meet someone who is connected to John Gaw. I don't know what that makes us. hahaha.

By the way, I go by my middle name of Mark.

Below here I am providing the only information I have regarding the father and mother of Robert and John. I have a friend in Ireland who is doing a free search for me to find out more about them. If/when I gather more information I will be glad to pass it on to you.

"Robert Gaw was born in Enniskillen, Ireland, in 1764, and died in Woodstock, Virginia, Sept. 3, 1829.
His mother's maiden name was Sarah Miles. According to a family legend, Robert Gaw's father, age 10,
found a small child washed up on the Irish shore, the lone survivor of a shipwreck. only her name Sarah
Miles, beautifully embroidered on her petticoat, was known. He ( Robert's father) subsequently married
her when they were grown.
When Robert Gaw was seventeen, leaving his father and a sister in Ireland, he sailed for america with his two brothers.
In a short time he found his way to the Valley of Virginia and settled in Woostock, becoming a successful merchant of that town.
His store was located on the site of the present Gearing Hotel. Today if you visit the site it is now a drug
store.
In 1808 his brother, John Gaw (father of Mrs Midred Payne), sold to him the "Brubacher" farm when John
moved West to Missouri. The farm, renamed "Runnimede", was East of Woodstock, Virginia. This John Gaw and one of the Meems wre great friends, and Mr Meem later named a son John Gaw Meem. This namesake afterwards lived in a little house rented from Robert Gaw, and latter Robert Gaw willed the little to his housekeeper, "Kitty".
The next generation of Meems became prominent and wealthy men in Shenandoah Couny, Virginia."

I believe we may have been in touch once before about the three Gaw brothers. I have the legend about Sarah Miles. To lend some credence to the legend, my mother's great grandmother, Catherine Gaw's father was Joseph MILES Gaw.
Thanks for the additional information that you've included below. I appreciated learning more about the Robert Gaw side of the family.
By a coincidence, my second husband is a Miles, so it is now my last name.

I am related to John Gaw who married Mary Miller in Virginia, their daughter Ellen is my great-grandmother who married Washington Knox. My uncle said that the family would tell me 'you have the McGaw chin'. Now I am wondering if at one time the name was McGaw? I have done my DNA. I would love to keep in touch.

Which child of Robert Gaw do you descend from? I would be interested in exchanging any information you have regarding the Gaw family. Especially info regarding Robert Gaw and his two brothers.
