I have been researching the Gavan families from Mayo for many years,it is possible that your bridget may have been the daughter of Dominick Gavan from Newport and Ballina, the year is right, there were several Bridget Gavans in Mayo around that time,I am happy to share with anyone the resources for the Gavan and Gavin which is the way they spell Gavan in Ireland, the local priest once told me " it depends on where you live as to how they spell it!!" I have never figured that one out yet but they are one and the same thing in Ireland,Dominick gavan who is buried in Kilmeena graveyard with several other Gavans has his childrens names spelt on the grave as Gavin but Gavan is correct.

My mother has been researching (half-heartedly) her Gavan relatives from Mayo for some time. We understand Peter Gavan left from Bangor in Mayo late in the 1850's. Have not had much luck finding more information. Would appreciate any advice.

Jim, I have been researching the Gavans from Mayo for many years and have collected many references to them and am in the middle of writing our family history of the Gavans ( which by the way also becomes Gavin and Gaven and even Garvan this confuses and causes delays in researching,in Mayo my great great grandfather Dominick Gavan name is spelt Gavan and his children on the same huge grave are spelt Gavin and Gaven!!) from Mayo,I can find two references to Peter,he was mentioned in the Griffiths valuation in 1851 as being from Collectors lane Castlebar parish of Aglish and again as being in Carrowbaun parish of Oughaval, there is a fellow Robert Gavan in America also researching the same name.hope this may help,

Thank you for the information. Some of my siblings, my mother and I made a trip to Ireland in 1998. We went to Bangor in Mayo which was alleged to be the town from which Peter Gavan left Ireland. We have not spent a lot of time or effort since I am afraid. I am also sorry to report that my cousin, Robert Gavan, who was the one in the family doing a little research died an unfortunately early death from cancer last year. Hopefully we can get back into the research again.

Peter Gavan came to Canada in the 1850's and his family lived in Quebec for many years, with some relatives still there. His son James Gavan was my namesake and great grandfather. He died at 104 in 1961 when I was two. Most of the Gavans in our family are now in Michigan.

Good luck with your research.

Surnames: Gavin/Gavan and Power
Hi Ray

Was just wondering if you have a Annie/AnnE Gavin/Gavan in your information. Shen is my gr grandmother who married a chimney sweeper called Patrick Power in Athlone or Mullingar in 1905ish. I know they moved around alot up until 1920 when she died. Patrick was killed in 1916 in Basra serving in the British Army. They had children called Micheal, John, patrick and Mary and Annie/Anne. Ballymahon, ballymore, mullingar and killbeggan has come up in my searches but ive come to a standstill now im just hoping you maybe able to shed some light on this area for me.

thanks so much
Amy

Hi

I am researching a Bridget Gavan who was born to Thomas and Margaret Gavand from Swinford in County Mayo in Ireland.

We have no record of what happened to Bridget. Do you know if your Bridget meets this date and if she came from this part of Mayo?

Many thanks
Anthony
