All these names are the same and only the irish can work out why members of the same family spell their names differently, last year in Mayo a dear friend a priest told me that they spelt the name according to where you lived!!! I have never worked that out, but it is true and makes no difference what the spelling is, and this knowledge can save a researcher years of frustration like it did for me many years ago when I started looking for the Gavans from Mayo.
I have quite a lot of info on the Gavan families from Mayo and have been researching for many years and am happy to help with any inquiries for the material that I have,
Ray Gavan.

Surnames: Gavin;Ludden any/all spellings
Dear Ray,
I am searching for the parents of John/Patrick Gavin and his wife Bridget Ludden. They were living in Louisburgh, CO Mayo in the 1860s when their son, Anthony was born. They had daughters born earlier: Catherine, Hannah and Cecilia but I have not found any records as yet. They immigrated to Leetonia, Columbiana CO., OH, USA circa 1870. Do you find this family in your research?
Thank you for any help.
Mary Anne

G'day, Ray.

Long time no talk, mate. I didn't know you were still following up the family story. And when are you coming down for a day in the highlands?

Take care.

Dal.

My Great Great Grandmother was called Catherine Gavan from West Port County Mayo. She left Ireland in the 1840s due no doubt to the famine. She lived in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs, and Married one John Burslem Pattison around 1850. I think she had a brother called Patrick. Do you know anything about her.

Thank you

We are trying to trace a Hugh Gavan born in Ireland, married to Mary MacCogan who was born in Foxford, County Mayo in 1823. Hugh may also have a brother Thomas who was married to Bridget ? on the 26th May 1840 in Meelick & Kilconcluff parish Mayo. We would appreciate any help as we are having difficulty tracing any further.

Hello Patrick. Thanks for your message. I also know quite a lot about my side of the Pattison family. John Burslem and Catherine Pattison nee Gavan, lived in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs. I think she died in 1901. She did have a son called William and a brother Jim Pattison, was my Great Grandfather. William also had a son called Albert Pattison who lived in Bacup Lancashire. My Father used to visit him.The spelling of Pattison is unusual but it seems that this is the surname which is the link. Catherine Gavan was also from Westport County Mayo. I`ve seen it on her marriage certificate. Does all this tally with your research into the Pattison family? Derek Pattison
