Hi, My name is Anthony Gavin and I am originally from Swinford in County Mayo. I am trying to broaden my own family tree around the 1850s and to do so have taken on the task of trying to reconstruct the twelve Gavan Families who lived there and are listed in the Griffith Valuation.

At the time of the Griffith Valuation there is a Bridget Gavan from Ardhoom in Meelick who is listed as the head of the household from the purposes of renting the property from the landlord. This would suggest that her husband was possibly dead at that stage unless he was abroad.

( see link http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?a...)

Her landlord was Rev Donnellan B. Seymour, Do you have any more information on this Gavan Family from Foxford / Meelick as I would like to try and get a more complete view of Bridget's family?

Many thanks
Anthony Gavin

Ray,
My Gavin family immigrated to the US from Monaghan, but family stories say originally from Mayo. I was in Monaghan last week, and a very small amount, all spelled Gavan. Wonderful woman there told me her husband said the Gavan's in Monaghan all came from Mayo. My great grandfather, Michael was born about 1824. I believe his father was Joseph, but nothing to document that. Was in Mayo, and they are just everywhere! Sorry I don't have more, but maybe there is a link

Nancy - now that is interesting. Where in Monaghan did the Gavins/Gavans from Mayo live? Do you have any idea when they moved to the area?

There are many branches of Gavins in Mayo, many who are not related to each other.
I am particularly interested as I am missing some members of mu family from the late 1800s and never thought to look in Monaghan for them!

Manythanks

Anthony

Hello Patrick Patterson, of Somerset West, South Africa.
We exchanged emails on Catherine Gavan some years ago. I have been trying to contact you for some time without success. Do you have an email address through which I can contact you? I did check my records and the information you gave to me. Catherine Gavan married John Burslem Pattison at St. Georges Church, Newcastle-under-Lyme, on 19 August 1852. John Burslem died on 13 August 1896 and his wife Catherine on 23 June 1900. At the time of her death, she lived at 21 Fletcher Street, NUL. They had six children: Ann, Ellen, Tom, James (my great-grandfather, John and William, who I believe was your grandfather. My family do have a picture of two of the brothers William and John which seems to have been taken outside a house. If you read this get in touch. Sorry for the delay in not replying sooner.
