John GAUNT m Molly PAYNE

Hello All,

In an attempt to tie the GAUNT line together, I just discovered some interesting family connections.

Molly PAYNE (d 1834, VA) d/o William PAYNE (b King George Co., VA - d 1780, Fauquier Co., VA & Anne PANNELL, married John GAUNT (some marriage info shows John GRANT)

John GAUNT probate 1815 Fauquier Co.,VA John GAUNT'S will was probated, with his brother-in-law James PAYNE, as
executor. The appraisal of John's property totaled $374-.92, and §190.14 was turned over to Mary GAUNT. (Book #6, pages 89 and 280, Fauquire County, Virginia.)

6/17/1770 Fauquier Co.,VA
John GAUNT purchased one Negro Boy Charles from from John PAYNE, his brother-in-law (possibly his wife's Uncle?) for 25 pounds
wit; Presley PAYNE and Robert GAUNT
Fauquier Co., VA Deed Bk 10 pg 232

1/27/1794 Fauquier Co., VA Widow of William PAYNE, Anne, gave John GAUNT, and his wife Molly numerous slaves but on 27 Jan 1794-, a special agreement was made regarding one certain negro woman named "HEATH", and her increase, to be their property during their lifetime and to
their heirs, lawfully begotten of their bodies, and if said John and Molly,
should die without lav/full issue from their bodies, then the said negro and her increase was to descend to the heirs of William PAYNE, sons Frank PAYNE,
John PAYNE and James PAYNE. This deed was witnessed by Joseph WITHERS and Robert GAUNT. (Deed book #11, page 4-73, Fauquire County, Virginia.)

1792 Fauquier Co., VA
Robert GAUNT rec'd grant of 81a in Fauguier Co., VA in the Manor of Leeds on ES of Cabin Branch adj to William PAYNE deceased and John GAUNT , during the lives of his wife Sally and son William GAUNT.

William Francis PAYNE (grandson of William PAYNE & Anne PANNELL)
1831 Daniel PAYNE, assignes his interest in a least Fauquier Co., VA 1792 by Robert GAUNT to first cousin,William F. PAYNE

I do not have John GAUNT or Robert GAUNT tied into my Andrew GAUNT line. Andrew GAUNT m Catherine CORBIN abt 1789, Culpeper Co., VA.

Here is another piece of the puzzle. James Francis PAYNE (1815, Fauquier Co., VA -- 1865) m Mary Margaret CORBIN (grandneice of Catherine CORBIN GAUNT). James Francis PAYNE is grandnephew of Molly PAYNE GAUNT.

Sources:

Gaunt, Jesse Samuel, The Gaunt Family: A Genealogy, (1978), "Electronic," 6.

Payne, Col. Brooke, The Paynes of Virginia, (2nd Ed., Third printing C. J. Carrier Co., Harrisonburg VA 1998 - Originally published 1937), "Electronic,"

John GAUNT is the correct time frame to be a brother or at least cousin to Andrew GAUNT.

I know there is no way of proving this, right now, but who knows in a little time.

Just thought I'd get your thoughts,
Linda Cashen Gaunt

As far as I can remember the earliest Gaunt records go back to the the 1700's. Some in Offord Cluny and some in Offord Darcy. Have you ever been there? It is virtually 1 village. The boundary between the two is a stream running across the main street. Offord Darcy Church is now not used. Offord Cluny belonged to the Cluniac order, and Offord Darcy to a titled landowner. The villages are mentioned in the Doomsday Book!
Jeannie Wright

Thanks for the reply. Not sure where the idea of a connection with James Gaunt came from - probably the only one that made sense, but I can't find anything to back it up. All I can find is baptismal records (his and his children's) but no trace of anything else - can you remember if there was anything earlier? A trip might be in order...

Hello
When I was researching my James Gaunt from Offord Cluny at the Record Office in huntingdon, I looked at the original Parish Registers but was not looking for a connection between James and Levi. The Parish Registers go a long way back, but are only available at the Record Office. I could not see a link between the two, but there was definitely information there about Levi Gaunt.

Hi. Have got back only this far and am now stuck. His mother is listed on his baptismal record as being called Elizabeth, but there is no father's name. By the 1841 census he is head of his own household, so that's no use. He had several children, of whom Joseph, the eldest, was my gg-grandfather. Joseph moved to Yorkshire, which is also where Levi died - I don't know if that implies any earlier Yorkshire roots. The only other information I have is that he was parish clerk in Offord Cluny. There are plenty of other Gaunts listed locally, but I can't find the connection - any helpful hints?

My ggrandfather was Edward Gaunt from Manchester, England. He married Ellen Hineman (sp?) and had several children in New York/New Jersey. If there is anyone researching him or her, I have the family bible which he gave her as a Christmas gift in 1882. It lists the children's vital info which could be helpful. If anyone has info on him, I would love to hear from you.

I am also an acquaintance of Harvey Gaunt III and just heard the news today of his passing. He had been previously married to a cousin of mine, and although they'd divorced, they'd remained friends. (If anyone needs the correct spelling of the town of his passing, it's "Palmetto" which is in Manatee County, FL). His home is about 25 miles south of where I live in Florida (although I've been up in Maine for the summer). Harvey III was a very nice person and had done some wonderful frame/shadowbox work for me, including a nice one of my father's Air Force photos, medals, patches, etc. Harvey III was an Air Force veteran himself.

Michael,
Thank you for the information - its really helpful.
I got stuck with John's parents (john baptised in 1806) as there seem to be 2 johns baptised around the same time, both in Armley, both with parents called John and Mary.

Anyway - some information for you:
John (1806) married Maria Stead (born 1809).
They had children: Anthony, Harriot, Elizabeth (born 1839), Joseph, Alfred and William H.

Elizabeth had a son called Walter born 4 November 1855, died 29 March 1898. I don't know who his father was as there's no name on the birth certificate.

Walter stayed some years with his grandparents (John and Maria) and his mother seems to have disappeared.

Anyway, I hope your research goes well.
You'd be welcome to link to the tree I have created on Ancestry - but I'm not sure how you would go about doing that.

Good luck with the trip to Yorkshire
Chris

Hi Chris

I have dug out some research I did on the internet (therefore it needs to be checked) a few years ago and found this.
1)	John Gaunt born approximately 1769 Armley. Married Mary born about 1773 Armley.
Children
i.	Mary Gaunt baptised 1 March 1795 Armley, Leeds
ii.	Samuel Gaunt baptised 29 May 1799, Armley, Leeds
iii.
Michael,
I am descended from John's daughter Elizabeth, who had a son Walter (and down through that line).
I would be most grateful for any information you could provide about John and his family tree. I had intended to take his line back as far as I could but unfortunately hit a bit of a wall.
Do you have his date of birth and parents? I could only approximate it from the census as 1806...

Hi Chris

Yes, we are related. I am descended from William H Gaunt and his daughter Sarah E. I have recently received a series of post cards (1903 to 1918) to (and occasionly from) a Sarah A Wilkinson. This lady appears not to be a relation, but seems to have had a close friendship with John William Gaunt, who I believe to be the eldest son of Anthony and Sarah Gaunt. I would be interested in hearing from you, if you have any more information on this branch of the Gaunt family, including who you are descended from.
Regards
Michael

Hi just seen your post, I have an Elizabeth gaunt of European birth possibly Spain in my tree. She was born about 1832. She married a John turner in
1845 in India. Possibly her family was involved with the army or malitia.
I'm not sure if this is any help, but you never know.
Regards
Sarah

Vern Carl Gaunt; IA (1902-1936) Obituary & Family Info Needed

I am looking for information on Vern Carl Gaunt. All the information I have for Vern is that he was born September 5, 1902 (possibly 1901) in Iowa and died on February 24, 1936 in Iowa. He was married to Martha Regina James. I have found two different possible grave locations. One source states that he is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa. The other source has him buried in Carpenter Cemetery, also in Webster County, Iowa. There is a picture of the stone for the Carpenter Cemetery source and it shows dates of 1901-1936.

Vern died very young and had 5 children. I would like obituary information and any additional information about him would be great. I am not sure who his parents were and I am at a stand still with this side of my husband's family.

James Miller GAUNT, Placer Co., CA

Hi All,

I am researching my husband's GAUNT line, specifically, James Miller GAUNT (b 1819, Rappahannock Co.., VA) s/o Alpheus GAUNT and Susannah HAINES. I recently located this info:

JAMES M. GAUNT,

Nominee for the office of Public Administrator
was born in Virginia, and was for a long time a citi-
zen of Missouri, from which State he emigrated in
1850 to California, and settled in Placer County in
'52. Mr. GAUNT is a mechanic, but has spent his
time in this State in laborious mining. Of active,
correct business habits, and possessing a stout honest
heart, that commands the respect of all with whom
he comes in contact, he is well suited to the place.
Also Hitory of Placer Co., CA

http://www.archive.org/stream/historyofplacerc00ange/history...

GAUNT, JAMES M.
J. M. GAUNT, whose death occurred at the County Hospital on the 8th, was at one time, 18 or 20 years ago, night watchman in Auburn. He killed a man named William O’BRIEN and was sent to State Prison for it for 10 years, but he was pardoned out. [Placer Argus, Auburn, Thursday, 7-12-1883.

The Thomas Gaunt you mention is my 10th great grandfather. He came to Maryland in 1654. Supposedly he is the son of Roger Gaunt of Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, however Roger's son Thomas was born on July, 23, 1650 according to parish records. Our Thomas Gaunt(d.1692)left a will in which he mentions his four children, Thomas (1686-1765), who married Priscilla Brooke, Ann, who married John Bradford, Elizabeth (d. 1716), who died unmarried and left her estate to her mother, Ann Wight (She remarried in 1697 to Col. John Wight) and Edward. There are no other records of this Edward Gaunt/Gantt, however family legend states that he returned to England and was never heard from again.

Jane "Ginny" Davidson, a daughter of William Davidson (died about 1812) and Martha Baker (died 1829), married John McCartney/McCarty in Botetourt Co., VA In 1803 (but the couple apparently lived in "next-door" Rockbridge Co., VA). John McCartney died circa-1815, and another researcher states that the widow Mrs. Jane "Ginny" (Davidson) McCartney married second to a James Gaunt. Perhaps that was the same James Gaunt (or his descendant) who you mentioned in your post. I wonder if James Gaunt and Jane "Ginny" Davidson had any children together?

John McCartney/McCarty appeared on the 1810 Rockbridge Co., VA census. I have not had a chance to look yet, but perhaps the James Gaunt who married Jane "Ginny" Davidson appeared on the 1820 census in either Botetourt or Rockbridge Co., VA. I have a lot of information on this Davidson family (going back to 1682 in James City Co., VA....and Holland before that), if you are interested. Comments/questions?

He was the sexton of I remember playing in the cemetary and later visiting him at an old age home where he died. If you have anymore info, I'd appreciate it. Thanks Monica

Berniece went on to have a singing/movie carreer between 1933-1945 under the name Shirley Ross. If anyone wants a copy of the picture I can scan it and e-mail it to you.

Berniece father was Charles Burr Gaunt and his father was George C. Gaunt who married Josephine Manville in 1883 in Gutrie County, Iowa. After George Gaunt died in 1894 she married Thomas Francis Corrigan in 1908. Thomas was the brother of Ella Bridget Corrigan and Owen Mathis Corrigan. Ella married Josephine's brother Charles W. Manville. Owen Mathis Corrigan was my mother's father which explains how she had a copy of the photo. She and Berniece were cousins by marriage twice.

Re: Joshua Gaunt

I found a Joshua Gaunt in the 1841 census living at 14 Wilson Fold, Pudsey, Yorkshire. Unfortunately, the name was mistranscribed as Ganns but the image looks as if it was Gaunt

Easter (Esther?) Ganns 55
Betty Ganns 20
Sarah Ganns 15
John Ganns 15
Joshua Ganns 10
Walter Ganns 5
Mary Ganns 5
Non of the above are, sadly, related to my Gaunts.
I also found a reference to a Joshua in 1851, a lodger and a farmer in Pudsey.
There is another Joshua in the 1851 census but his birth date was about 1828 which seems a bit far out even for the census
Mike

I cannot get your email to work so I am using this instead. I cannot find any marriage between the two names you mention but I did find a marriage between a Walter Gaunt and an Emma Jane Woodhead in 1905 in North Bierly in Yorkshire.
Any help to you?
Mike
