I AM RESEARCHING FOR GAUCHAT'S AND GIAUQUE'S. FROM ALL THE INFO I HAVE LETTERS ETC... THE STRING I AM LOOKING FOR ORIGINATED IN PRELES CANTON OF BERN SWITZERLAND. THE NAMES THAT I HAVE COME ACROSS ARE :DINA GAUCHAT(GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER). WHO I KNOW WAS STLL THERE IN 1898 AND WOULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT 15. SHE LATER CAME TO THE U.S. ALSO, JULIE GAUCHAT GIANQUE(POSSIBLY HER MOTHER OR GRANDMOTHER). OCTAVIE OR OCTAVIA GAUCHAT (I BELIEVE HER AUNT OR SISTER ABOUT 84 IN 1946). I KNOW SHE STAYED IN PRELES. HELENE A COUSIN NOT SURE IF SAME LAST NAME. AND CAROLINE GIAUQUE WROTE TO DINA IN THE U. S. FROM PRELES IN 1938. ONCE DINA CAME TO THE U.S. SHE SETTLED IN NEW ROCHELLE NEWYORK AND MARRIED LOUIS HELMRICH. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I am helping my grandson with his ancestry for a scout merit badge. In his lineage is Julia Josephine Albright... daughter of Joseph Gianque of France and Josephine (last name is hard to read.. .looks like miller.. but her married name would hbe been Gianque) and she is from Berne Switzerland. He is having a hard time with this. Let us know what you think.

I think our families are connected somehow:

All originally from Preles, Bern, Switzerland, the following are my 3 generations that I have been able to trace:
(1) Jean Jacques Giauque & Susanne Rossell
(2) Israel Giauque & Susan Gauchat (1767 & 1770)
(3) Abraham Charles Giaque Jaques & Anna Frankhauser (1802)

Then about 1834 arrived in NY, USA - stayed for a short time and then settled in Ohio....then kids scattered to Indiana & Kansas. (Abraham's brother, David Louis Jaques, went to MI.)

After the Civil War, Abram & Ana settled in KS.

Hope we connect.

Sincerely,
Alexis Jacques

I have possession of a family history book of my mother's family, Giauque, from Canton, Ohio, USA. It was assembled in 1980 by a cousin of my grandfather, Charles A. (Bert) Giauque, of the Columbus, Ohio area. It is quite extensive however ends at the publish date in 1980. It goes back to the period of about 1500 in the Preles, Switzerland area. I would be happy to share this with you if you feel it would help in your research. My grandfather, mother, and to my knowledge Charles, are all deceased.

That would be great if you could help me with that. I have been stuck o anything from about the time my great great grandmother came to the us and before. Everyone from my family that could help with that has passed. So any information that you have would be great. Just let me know what you need from me. Look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks Mandie

It is possible that they could be related. Did you have any family history you could follow back?

Hello,

I just read this post, and wanted to make a couple of suggestions. That's all they are. . . suggestions.

The last name does not contain the letter "n." It's the letter "u." So the name is spelled Giauque, not Gianque.

You can look at http://new.familysearch.org and find the following info.

1. Joseph Maximilien Giauque, born 15 Sept 1818 at Preles, Bern, Switzerland, died 16 April 1868 (place: I don't know).

He married

2. Marianne Julie (Julia) Willier (which would look a lot like "Miller" in an old document to a person who speaks English). She was born 8 April 1822 in Preles, Bern, Switzerland, and died between 1890-1903. (Place: I don't know).

They were married 30 June 1840 in Hutchinson Kansas, and had 8 children. One of the children (all of their names are listed in http://new.familysearch.org) was named Julia, born about 1851 in Berlin, Holmes, Ohio, and she married Simpson Albright (that's his name. . .Simpson Albright), born 1847 (no day or month given) in Berlin, Ohio. They had 7 seven (all their names are given on the site cited).

The Giauque family is not from France, but from Preles, a French-speaking village in the German speaking Canton of Bern, Switzerland.

My name is Gerald (Gerry) Giauque. My email is gs.giauque@gmail.com. I would be happy to help more, for free, if you wish. I am a retired university teacher of French, and have visited the village where my Giauque ancestors originated. I am not well-acquainted with Ancestry.com, because I use the other site so often.

Good luck,
Gerry Giauque
