MANSFIELD, Ohio: Fred was a family man ~ he loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren!

He loved family gatherings, holidays and parties, dinners and picnics.
He was usually the life of the party with his natural quick wit and humor. "Uncle Fritz", as he was affectionately known, was fond of his German heritage, and all the ethnic foods, customs and especially the music!
He spoke the German language to the delight of his large host of friends.

"A merry heart is like medicine" and he had a way of making everyone laugh. He loved music having sung in the Apostolic Christian Choirs and the Richland Academy Chorus.
An avid gardener, Fred was a member of the Mansfield Men's Garden Club and RSVP.
He loved his many friends at the Ontario Christian Fellowship and had taught Sunday School for 27 years. Along with his wife, Carlene, Fred was involved in several humanitarian efforts including Hurricane Andrew and the flooding in the Midwest. He also loved to fish and did so every chance he could.

Frederick D. Gaubatz, 81, of Mansfield, Ohio died Thursday, September 30, 2010, at MedCentral Mansfield.

Born January 6, 1929, in Mansfield, Ohio he was the son of Michael and Katharina (Schmidt) Gaubatz.

A 1948 graduate of Mansfield Senior High, Fred had worked in sales at Lazarus, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of the Ontario Christian Fellowship. Fred was the longest surviving diabetic in Richland County, Ohio.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Carlene (Hardy) Gaubatz whom he married October 14, 1951 in Akron, Ohio; two daughters, Rebecca (Gary) Balok and Beth Ann Gaubatz; four grandchildren, Rachel Janicin, Mark Balok, Stephanie (Tim) Elias and Seth (Erin) Marchant; three great grandchildren, Arielle and Miles Janicin and Larissa Elias; a brother, Philip Gaubatz; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Gaubatz; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Fred was preceded in death by a son, Rick Gaubatz; his parents; five brothers, Mike, Carl, Richard, Nick and Jake Gaubatz; and two sisters, Betty Jackson and Caroline Rachel.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road, Mansfield.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at the Ontario Christian Fellowship, 640 S. Lexington-Springmill Road, Mansfield conducted by Pastor Kim Maurer.

Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
Friends may also call one hour prior to the services, from 9-10 a.m., at the church on Wednesday.
