Leroy Gatch, Walterboro, SC
Leroy Gatch had twin sons, Freddie John and Eddie Tom, I am the son of Eddie Tom Gatch. I would like information to determine if our family are descendants of Phillip Gatch, the methodist preacher and contemporary of John Wesley.

Re: Leroy Gatch, Walterboro, SC
According to a book published about the Gatch family, which contains much information that may be of interest to you and with which you may be acquainted, it is unlikely that the branch of the Gatch family in the South descends from Phillip Gatch, the second circuit riding Methodist preacher and contemporary of John Wesley. Rather, it is possible (I believe) that he may have been related to John Gatch, although much younger, who was living in Charles Town (ca. 1708?) and through whom the Southern branch of the family like yourself are documented to have originated.

Re: Leroy Gatch, Walterboro, SC
Hi, I have a book that was put together back in 1989 from my relatives from South Carolina on the South Carolina Gatches, and their descendants. According to the book the original descendant from Prussian Germany from Europe, was Godfried Gesch, around after 1709. His son was Conron, which from the best they could find was the father of John Gatch, which resided in somewhere in the area of Beaufort District, South Carolina. Also, Conron was supposely travelled to North Carolina, which is mentioned in the census books around 1790. In the whole book, does not mention the name Philip Gatch. But one thing I did notice in this book, that alot of different people did change their names through the years, and married into different families. According to the book, more info is supposely in the Board of Trade - Miscellaneous Vol 2, #D-68, Public Records Office, London, England page 27, and in the Mormon Genealogy Depart, Salt Lake City, Utah. Hopefully this might be some help to you. My sister and myself also is trying to find any more info on our family history, besides what is in the book.

I am the son of Eddie Tom Gatch. Your dad was my uncle johnny..(he was married to aunt nina) I've heard of Phillip Gatch. I tried to trace his ancestry a few years ago. It was very time consuming. I didn't get very far.

Re: Leroy Gatch, Walterboro, SC
I am doing dna results research on my family tree and trying to sort out my lines. My Ephraim Sheppard married Susan Gatch, daughter of John & Martha Gatch, sister of Lewis Gatch, all of Prince Williams Parish. We have some exotic ancestry including American Indian, Portuguese/Spanish, and (maybe) Gypsy. Obviously my Gatches were not Indian or hispanic, but the Black Dutch so called, were often Gypsy. Also, one of our Gatches could have married an Indian woman. I would like to either exclude or include Gatch as possible link for these results. Have any of you Gatches heard any rumor of any of the Gatch wives being Indian or hispanic, or Gatch being Black Dutch or Gypsy?

Oh, P.S. I did have a dna result confirming Prussian ancestor.

Re: Leroy Gatch, Walterboro, SC
Hi Ann Helen, I am the G,granddaughter of Franklin Durant and Martha Gatch and daughter of Leroy Gatch. My Grandfather,John Gatch told me, that he was told, that early in the Gatch line, that one of them married a Cherokee Indian and was disowned by the family. Through all my research,I think he was talking about Conron, who was the son of Godfrey and Maria Gatch from Prussia and whom I believe was the father, of the first John Gatch in Charleston,S.C. In referance to Phillip Gatch,he was the son of Conduce, who was the brother of Conron and the son of Godfrey and Maria Gatch from Prussia. Your DNA showing Prussia link,is another validation of my belief. Mary Elizabeth Gatch

Re: Leroy Gatch, Walterboro, SC
I will pay and have several Northern Gatches take the DNA test, if you will take the Southern Gatch test. I have been wanting to solve this issue as well. I am entering in all nothern Gatch genealogy on Ancestry.com from a book. ******* update ************ All the Maryland Gatches from the Markham's Orange Book have been added to Ancestry.com, about 7 of them have taken the Y-chromosome test. We need a lot more input from the South Carolina Gatches. I once believed there was no chance they were related, but the Gatch DNA seems much more volatile (more mutations per generation) than what I was comparing to. Feel free to email me at jamesedwin.chandler@gmail.com to discuss Gatch DNA comparison Updated....Oct 2014, DNA has proven that the Carolina Gatches are not closely related to the Baltimore Family, at least at the Godfrey level.
