I am looking for descendants of Lewis N. Gatch of Cincinnati, OH. Died 1936. Sons were John G and Loren Greeno Gatch and he had 4 grandchildren in 1926. Ann Gatch was one of these grandchildren. If you are descended from one of these, please post or email to: cooche@bellatlantic.net.
I would like to find my cousins and also compare Civil War archives you may have concerning Col. C.L. Greeno of the 7th PA Cav.

Ultimately John N. Gatch (d. 1967)had seven
children, four of whom are still alive.
Loren Greeno Gatch had no children, and
died in 1942.

Thanks for responding, Loren! Lewis Gatch's wife was my grandmother's oldest sister.
Are you interested in exchanging more family information?

I'm not a serious genealogist, but there
is a book that you might find useful:
DESCENDANTS OF GODFREY GATCH of BALTIMORE
CO., MARYLAND, by Virginia Gatch Markham
(Lawrence, KA: Allen Press, 1973).

Otherwise, all the immediate descendants
of Lewis Gatch are hiding in and about
Milford, OH.

The book also contains an appendix on Gatches
in South Carolina.

By the way, isn't there a Loren Packer?

I'm not such a serious geneaologist either. I mostly put a message here in hopes of finding some Gatch cousins.
Yes, there is a Loren Packer; he was my father.
I would really like to correspond some with the Gatches in and around Milford.
I think there are some Greeno cousins around Cincinnati and I am trying to find them too.

I see the connections more clearly now.

Charles Loren Greeno (Colonel Greeno) fought
at Chickamauga and Gettysburg. After the war
Colonel Greeno and Lucy moved to Milford, OH,
where he went into the mattress business
and (making good use of his own product) had
eleven children.

Mary Greeno married Lewis Newton Gatch in
1890. She bore two sons, Loren Greeno and
John Newton. Loren died childless, but John
sired seven children, who in turn produced
some particularly illustrious grandchildren,
if I may say so.

Another Greeno daughter, Esther,
married Gibson Packer of Pittsburgh,
where Loren was their only child. Loren
moved to Ashville, NC, where he was
a lawyer and judge. He also played
the violin. With his wife Lee
he had two sons and one daughter. But I
digress...

Another daughter, Anna, married a Coughlin
and moved to Traverse City, MI. Greenos
(and Gatches)still vacation in the area.

I believe most of the Colonel's eleven were
children were daughters (Loren Greeno
died of Bright's disease in 1913). The
daughters tended to name their own sons
Loren, hence the ubiquity of that noble
moniker.

Greeno descendants otherwise reside openly
in the Indian Hill neighborhood of
Cincinnati.

Yes, I'm glad you see the connections! It took me a while to figure it out. I only remembered that there were Gatches in the family somewhere. I remember meeting Loren Gatch's widow, Minna when I was a child, I think. And yes, Loren is indeed a ubiquitous and noble moniker!

The first time I find the name Loren in the family is an uncle of Charles Greeno. There is a good history and descendant list at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~farmerie/greeno.htm
It was done by Todd Farmerie. I have put a list there of Col. Greeno's children, although I may have some of the spouses names wrong. I thought that Anna had married a Cochlin, at least that is the spelling I had.
Aslo, there is a web site dedicated to the 7th PA Cavalry. I have sent them a picture of Col. Greeno which they put on the site. It is a descendants' group, so if you are interested, you and any other interested parties can join. You can visit the site at:
http://hometown.aol.com/pa7cav/index.html

I am assuming that we are cousins, you and I - once removed, since I am the same generation as your father.
I am interested to know if your father or uncles have any of Col. Greeno's Civil War relics and such. I have about 30 letters written by him and his brother Amos, and also other documents and photos to share with you. I am guessing that your family has some information since your grandfather was interested in it and some of these family stories must have been passed down. For example, I would like to know about your Gatch ancestor and the assasination of Lincoln. I have the idea he was one of the first on the scene.

You can mail to me directly: cooche@bellatlantic.net
Is there still a Greeno Camp at Lake Leelanau??

We are looking for some information of the Philip Gatch family that came from Virginia in 1798 to the Cincinnati area. I am a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Chairperson for the restoration of a Conastoga Wagon from the 1700's. This was donated to the Ohio DAR and brought to Ohio by Philip Gatch. We are looking for any information on this line of family for restoration information and posible contact with the family. The Wagon restoration will be completed within two weeks. Please reply!

I, too am a descendant of Philip Gatch, who was a descendant of the Godfrey Gatch family who came here from Prussia in the late 1700's. I do have some very interesting information on the family, if anyone wishes to contact me.

My uncle by marriage was Loren Greeno Gatch. He married Minna Adams in 1940 or so and they had no children. Uncle Loren died of pneumonia after attending a Princeton-Yale football game. His brother was John Gatch who was married to Orpha and they had John, Dorothy, Ann, Diana, Margaret and Lewis. I believe John and Dorothy are both deceased but Diana lives in Cincinnati and Ann lives in Terrace Park. As best I know Lewis moved to Traverse City, Michigan.
