Just ran across your message today. We may be connected. My great-grandfather Tobias Gassmann came from Plawno in the Russian Empire and his wife Dora Schacher settled briefly in New York in 1872, but were in Chicago by the time of the 1880 census.

Although his older sister Yetta IMrs. Gabrield Radbel) was born in New York, my grandfather Isaac Gassman (note that he dropped the second "n") was born in Plawno during a family visit. He always referred to himself as having been born in Germany.

Tobias ran a furniture store in Chicago for many years. I believe it was in south Chicago. My grandfather's younger sister Rosie was a piano teacher in Chicago until she married an actor, Sam Klein, who was in vaudeville. I've never been able to trace them.

The Radbels remained in Chicago, but my grandfather moved his family to Detroit. Later these Gassmans moved to San Antonio, Texas.

Is any of this ringing a bell with you? I;ve been able to find out quite a bit about Tobias' lineage, but absolutely nothing about his wife.

Carolyn Gassman Simon, Tucson, AZ

Looking for Gassman

Hi, I am trying to find my Aunts and Uncles, cousins who ever might be out there. I have known very little about the Gassman family. THis is what I know My Grandmothers name was Valeria Ruth Rogers, she died before I was even born. My Grandfathers name was Chester Wayne Gassman, he to died before I was born. I do know they had several children. My fathers name is Larry Chester Gassman, he has a brother named John Gassman. I know for a fact that they had another brother, who was given up my my Grandmother to her sister. I know that he could maybe be in California somewhere and might be a lawyer? Not sure though, I hread that from my mother. I also know they had sister(s) either 1 or 2 of them. Im not sure of there names or where they would even be. I also have the names of my Grandmothers parents which are Myrtle Ruth Etnridge and John Alexander Rogers. Also I have the names of my Grandfathers parents which are Cordia Eller Wilburn and Louis Gassman. If there is anyone out there that knows anything at all, please, please let me know. I have always wondered about this side of my family, and I would really like to solve this mystery :)

I am looking for Maryland Gassmans. One, William D., operated a rope manufacturing business in Hagerstown in the late 1800s. Apparently he made the rope that was used to hang John Brown, at Charles Town, (then Virginia) in 1859. This according to a Hagerstown newspaper. I am going to Charles Town in July to look for the sheriff's requisition which the paper said was made of Mr. Gassman.
Thanks.

Gassman in Michigan

My great-greatgrandfather was George Gassman of St. Clair County MI. He is listed on the 1894 census as age 60, born in Germany, parents born in Germany, and a farmer. His wife Margaret (Zobl) is 49 and born in Germany. The children at home include my great grandmother Mary, who married Gregory Krantz in 1896, Peter, age 17; Victoria, 15, and Thresia, 14. They also had three children who died of diptheria in 1893. I cannot find any other information on the Gassman family and hope someone will also be related to this line.
Another George Gassman is listed on the 1870 MI census as living in Detroit, age 41, a merchant and tailor, with a wife, Louise. No relation that I know of.

Hi Morgan, This must be another Gassmann family as only one son survived the diptheria epidemic in 1893 and that was Peter, born 1877. It is unknown who he married but his children were Stanley, George and Margaret. Census records show he immigrated to America in the 1870s. Whether he was accompanied by brothers or other relatives is not known as they did not settle in the same area. Thanks. Linda

From census records, we know she arrived in America 1853-1854, but don't know who she came with, since we haven't yet found her on any ship manifests. We don't know her parents' names or siblings. She married Yost Yost, from Nottwil Switzerland, in 1854 in Rochester NY. By 1857, they were living in Minnesota where the first of nine children were born.
Cheryl, I don't have alot about my family right now. I think my mom has some information and I can also get with my aunt Bernice (my dad's sister). I think she has some history as well. It will take me a while but I'll see what I can come up with.

I am posting her message and email, with her permission. She was recently at a yard sale and bought a box of family photos and papers, will send to interested party for cost of shipping, which she estimates at $8 or so. Paperwork includes naval discharge certificate for a Robert John Gasman dated 1946. Also a funeral registry for a Carl Gasman; location on that paperwork is Madison, Wisconsin. Apparently other photos and papers were in the box. She is a family tree hunter herself, and knows someone may be interested in having this material. Write her at the email address above.

Gassman: Germany to Stephenson county Illinois

I have a new website at:

http://pamgarrett.com

It includes a report on the Gassman family. The name sometimes appears as Gossman and Gassmann. Fred Gassman came with his Rosenstiel inlaws to America from Germany just after 1840. He settled in Stephenson county Illinois. He was first married to Mary Rosenstiel and secondly to Minnie Henke (Hanke, Hienke). He had ten children.

Some of their marriages include: Charles Gassman and Mary Leseman, Louisa Gassman and Edward Brueckner (Brickner), Nina Gassman and William Biesemeier, John Gassman and Anna Becker, Matilda Gassman and Gus Klaas, Edward Gassman and Pauline Polker, Anne Gassman and Charles Leseman, Emilie Gassman and Eugene Schmidt. The report follows many of their descendants and related families.

The site also includes photographs and general information on German families coming to America. I would welcome your visit and enjoy hearing about your connections.
Pam Garrett
