Hello Sheila,
I have some information on ancestry. I am descended from Samuel and Theophila and probably Job and Lois as well but a cousin and are are hitting a brick wall re Job and Lois. I do know they were disowned from the Quakers when Job fathered a bastard child (quoting Quaker minutes here) and they did not make amends and so moved to New York, Cayuga County, where they lived next door to Levi and Kezia. I haven't been able to trace them after the 1810 census. There were 3 young children living w/them in 1810 and I believe one was my GGGrandfather, Mark Gaskill. My cousin and I think he was a grandchild of Job and Lois as they are over 45 at this time. We think he and the other 2 children belonged to either Isaac or Hudson Gaskill, who were living in the same area but in newly formed Seneca County. In tracking down all other possibilities I considered the Levi/Kezia branch but eliminated them. Gaskills go back to Salem, Mass. I cn send other info if you want it.
Vicki

Col.Charles Byron Gaskill 1841

I was looking through old pictures of my great grandmothers and found a picture of this Charles Byron Gaskill and on the back she had written uncle Byron. My great grandmother is Rosemary Dreyer and her mother is Rosemary "Mollie" Elise Walker. I also found a picture of a young girl ad on the back was written Bonnie Gaskill. She also has a book on the Gaskill Genealogy. I have yet to figure out how they are related to us. I've tried to research them but I have only found that Charles lived with his family in Niagara Falls, New York and had three daughters. looking through some census records I found one where a Mollie Walker is listed with him as his niece but I' not sure how she is his niece through marriage or directly related. Any Info on them would be nice. Thanks.

My husband comes from a line of Gaskill's that came to Anerica some time around 1630. That was Edward Gaskill and his son Samuel was born in this country. We are considering doing the DNA test through Ancestry. Would your group be interested in his results? Nina & Roy

Shea,

Thanks for such a quick response. I've been off and on this board (and others) for years.

Unfortunately, my Benjamin, who was born in 1821 in Dundee, NY, died in 1865, a Civil War casualty. I have lots of information about the family since then, but I'm also stuck going back before him. I HATE that, too!

Good luck in your search!

Rick

My Benjamin Gaskell was born around 1820. I found him on a NY state census living in NY city in 1865. He was married to Amanda Davison Jeroloman, died 1867( her first husband was Cornelius Jeroloman). They had 2 or 3 children, one of them being 2nd great grandmother Eugenia Gaskill m. William Lidgate.
Benjamin was a pilot/seaman. I found him some Brooklyn NY directories living at 604 Hudson ave. listed as such. After his wife died in 1867, he disappeared and his youngest children are living with relatives.
I have searched death, marriage, birth.... You name it , I've searched for it. As of right now, he is a thorn in my side because until I can found out who is parents are, I can't go back any further!!!
I HATE being stuck!!!

Shea
Shea,
My gg grandfather was also Benjamin Gaskill. He was also born in NY. There were two Benjamins in NY at about that time. One was the son of Verney Gaskill who came from Richmond, NH and settled in Lockport, Niagara County, NY in 1803. The other Benjamin I'm aware of that was contemporaneous with that Benjamin was my gg grandfather. My Benjamin married Mercy Kingsley in 1842 and moved to Richmond Center, Ashtabula County, OH around 1852.

Do you have any other information on your Benjamin? Date of birth, death, marriage, parents?
Rick

Joseph H Gaskill 1820-1901 Pemberton, NJ

I obtained Civil War files from the National Archives for 'our' Joseph H Gaskill, married to Mary Emma Allen and father to Ida, Thomas, Aaron, Bessie. His first wife was a Mary Ann Bishop who died in 1863 in Moorestown; this from a sworn affidavit from him. What is utterly amazing is that there is no mention of his own birth date in the file, only his age, which consistently places him born near the end of 1820. He did not read or write and perhaps was uncertain of his exact birthday as it is blank on any forms...

Some trees have him married to Mary Cliver and also the son of Joseph and Sarah.

There are 2 candidate Josephs in 1850 Pemberton. One, a cooper, married to a Mary H with children Caroline and Mary L. ['our' Joseph H does NOT list those names as among his children...] The other, a farmer, Joseph in 1850 Pemberton is unmarried living at home with Joseph, Sallie/Sarah and sister Hannah A.

There is no mention of 'our' Joseph being a cooper. He enlists in the CW Union Army on 12/25/1863 as a laborer.

'Our' known Joseph died 31 Aug 1901 and is buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Pemberton. His last pension payment was made 4 Aug and he was later recorded as deceased. His tombstone shows him as Joseph H.

I am certain this Joseph is he who married Emma. I don't believe he is the one who married Mary H Cliver. No record of him being a cooper.

My concern is whether his parents really were Joseph and Sarah... If you trace them back in other trees, you lose 'our' Joseph H as their child...

Any thoughts or other info that might help sort this out?? Any other solid records?

Happy to share all the CW files.

Bob H.
Mostly, yes. We are having a hard time pinning down our male Gaskill. If we could relate him to a specific Gaskill family then we could maybe go from there. He only had girls, that we for sure know, one of those girls being my great grandmother. Since its hard to know exactly who her father was, there are several Benjamin Gaskill from the same area around the same time, I don't know what line to follow to find a male. So the search continues!
We think he is the son of William Gaskill that had 3 wives and several children. My great grandmother had a sister living with some cousins who I believe is the child of Sarah Gaskill Horner. Sarah had a brother named Benjamin but there is not much info on him. That is how I have made the connection.
Thanks for reply. This DNA stuff can be somewhat confusing, for me anyway!
Thanks,
Shea

Homer Gaskill, First Police Chief of Birmingham MI

Does anyone have information about Homer F. Gaskill after 1940? The census that year shows him renting a house on Franklin Rd, Bloomfield Township, Michigan, with his wife Elizabeth Wise. I am particularly interested in his death date and finding an obituary.

Homer was born in 1875 in Hastings, Michigan. His first wife was Mattie May Slawson, and they had a daughter, Bernice Naomi Gaskill. Bernice was born in 1898 and died in 1910. Mattie was institutionalized in the Michigan Asylum for the Insane in Kalamazoo, probably around 1906. Homer then married Elizabeth in 1909; they had a son and one adopted daughter. Homer was the first police chief in Birmingham, from 1919 - 1926.

The 759-page book, GASKILL GENEALOGY, was compiled by Elizabeth Potts Koleda and printed privately in 1988. She died in 1992.

Donald Casselli compiled a 68-page "Generation Chart" in 1997, which simplifies use of Koleda's book. He also took on the sale and distribution of the Koleda book. I believe I may have bought one of the last copies more than 10 years ago,

You might find a copy at a genealogy society library or maybe someone on this list has a copy they no longer use. The book does contain some errors but on the whole it's very helpful.

Hi Mary,

One specific error I've noticed is in, not surprisingly, my own line. On page 445, top of page, the parents of Elizabeth
Crall, wife of Henry Gaskill, are listed incorrectly as Charles H, and Hannah (Gaskill) Crall. Charles H. Crall was the brother of Elizabeth and his wife Hannah Gaskill was Henry Gaskill's sister.

Henry died in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, not Alliance as listed.

On page 436, under I. Shelby Gaskill, it states that he was named after Isaac Shelby Crall, father of Hannah Crall who married Henry Gaskill. That should be ELIZABETH Crall.

I'm sure there must be some other errors--with such a massive compilation of names--many of them very similar--that seems inevitable. Over the years other researchers have complained of errors. But on the whole I've found Koleda's book accurate and of great help and a valuable resource for anyone researching the Gaskills descending from Samuel Gaskoyne in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Cindy

The book lists 267,349 descendants, tracing many, many different lines, so it is hard to say exactly where it ends. However, I don't believe it includes many, if any, descendants born in the 1900s. In my own case, my great-grandfather, born in 1835, is listed; his wife and children are not.

It must be frustrating for you not to have ready access to the book. Elizabeth Koleda mentions donating her father's letters to the Ohio Genealogical Society Library. (Her father, Clyde Potts, was a genealogist and the Gaskill Genealogy book is based on his research.) Perhaps they also have a copy of the book; in any case a phone call to them might be helpful.

Also, there are many Gaskill family trees on Ancestry.com. I believe you can visit it for free, and many public libraries have it on their computers for anyone to use.

If you list the name of the Gaskill ancestor you are tracing on this message board, you may find someone in the same line of descendancy who will share information.

Good luck on your search, Cindy
Shea,

The Y-DNA is only passed on by males and tested for males. As there are no living males in your direct line, you would have to look whether there are living male descendants of a brother, uncle or male descendant of an earlier ancestor of your 3rd great grandfather. You might see if that male descendant, if interested in a test, would want to split the cost if it is also for your benefit. This could require further research to locate if there are living male descendants of a common male Gaskill ancestor related to or beyond your 3rd great grandfather. If you know you have Gaskill ancestry, is this to see if connects to a specific ancestral line?

Paul Cobb

Not sure of Rufus' parents, but he was bn in NH, migrated to Fond du Lac Co. Wisconsin (1855 cen); then in 1870 he was in Rushford, Winnebago Co. WI.
He had married Freedom Porter, 24 April 1829, Waterford, Caledonia, VT, and I think they had three children: Rufus Jr., b ca 1831; Stephen Porter,ca 1834; and Roxanna, b ca 1838.
He died 1873, and his wife died in 1874, Brown Co. Kansas, Hiwatha Cem., and is bur. there as is Samuel P. (he d. at 45 yrs). (see Findagrave).
I cannot find where Rufus is bur. I thought he'd be in Wisconsin, but can't find a death or cemetery record there. Since Rufus d. 1873, and she in 1874, and she was with Samuel in KS, I think she may have left WI, and moved to Kansas to be near son, Samuel P.
I contacted the cemetery person who has books, and no record there of Rufus.

I'd be glad if anyone knows name of Cemetery where he is buried?
thank you.
I believe I may be able to shed some light on your Walter Gaskill. The Ella listed as his wife in the 1910 USC for Harrison Precinct, Kootenai Co., ID is my husband's cousin. Her maiden name was WILBUR. Her parents were Job and Alma (THOMAS) Wilbur and she was born in Tuscola Co.,MI on 8 October, 1872. As far as I can tell, Walter was her first husband and I believe the marriage was childless. We do know that Ella had married 2. Friend J. WILLARD before the 1920 USC. Thus, Walter Gaskill must either have died or the pair divorced before 1920.

The last record I have for Ella is the 1940 USC. (It was taken only about a month after her second husband died.) She was running a boardinghouse in Plummer, Benewah Co., ID at the time. Ella's father, Job Wilbur, was my husband's great great grandfather's youngest brother. Sorry...no pictures yet, but I will most certainly keep my eyes peeled.
This oral history may be helpful. Peter Gaskell, Jr., of Cheshire England married Christina Gulielma Penn, the only child of William Penn the third. Two of Peter's three brothers, James, William, or George were said to have been given large tracts of land in Pennsylvania by William Penn. They were Quakers. One brother married contrary to doctrine and was "excommunicated". One brother went to New York, the other to Virginia and then Tennessee. My line is through the brother who went to Virginia and then Tennessee. Our earliest record is of Robert J. Gaskill, son of Hannah Gaskill. He was born 1 Mar 1793 in Virginia. He died 2 Mar 1856 in Maury Co., Tennessee. There is a complete record of the family of Peter Gaskell Sr.,of Cheshire England going back many generations. It is on familysearch.org

I am a descendant of James and Ida Hoover Gaskill. Their oldest daughter, Mary Gaskill, married Emmett Kurtz, in early 1920's. They had 2 children, James Charles Kurtz b. Oct 1, 1925, D. April 13, 1988; and Jack Emmett Kurtz b. Nov 1926 d. Abt 1974. Mary and Emmett were divorced abt 1929 and went to live in SE Kansas with James and Ida on Gaskill family property/farm. Mary married William Reese abt 1940. Mary died in July 1989. I am 1 of 3 daughters of James C Kurtz. I am very interested in James and Ida's ancestors. Louise Gaskill, James and Ida's second daughter, died abt 1961, leaving no children.
Gaskill Genealogy Book

As I'm doing my research for our family, I ran across the 2 Gaskil Genealogy books. One written by Elizabeth P. Koleda and the other revised by Donald Oreste Caselli. Does anyone have any info about these? How we can get a copy of one or what library has one, etc.? Has anyone tried to find the publisher to see if they will print any more? Any help would be great! I remember when I was young, someone coming to my Great Grandmother's house asking lots of questions about the Gaskill family. He had a book and if I remember right he was collecting more info. for it, but no one else in the family seems to remember hearing of it and those that I was with that evening have all passed since that date. Does anyone have any info.?

Hi Jackie,

I am a descendent of Sylvester Gaskill and I am trying to learn more about Amanda Gaskill. Were you ever able to figure out who she was or where she came from? Do you also have any thoughts as to who was Sylvester's father? John N. Hamilton was the first name listed on Amanda's bastardy bond and I have been informed that because of this there is a strong possibility that he was the father. Notably, this is contrary to family legend, as my mother recalls that Sylvester's father was Portuguese. If you have any information about Sylvester's parentage, I would love to hear more about it.

actually James L Gaskill matches up with the Gaskill's (my 25 marker is actually has mutated by two markers) but I believe he matched 100% (at least to 25 markers) with the other two or three There is a Cobb that matched up with the 25 marker test I emailed him and he replied that his father was adopted (by the Cobb family) and didn't have any information. I would guess his birth name was Gaskill?
I would guess that James's lineage goes back to Samuel Gaskill and Provided Southwick in Salem, MA in the mid 1600's (father was Edward and Sarah Parker Gaskill)
but keep digging I am sure you have looked for lineage with the Koleda's "Gaskill Genealogy" book? if you can get back to the late 1700's you might connect I believe there were other's researching Robert J Gaskill (my grandfather was Robert J Gaskill but no direct connection)
I will have to look and see if Hal Gaskill is from that line? have you looked up the Gaskill genealogy forum for that surname? I see that you have been there in past years. not too much satisfaction there? Have you made connection with Harold (Hal) Gaskill? I have hit considerable blocks over the years but once in a while a bit of a break through

My name is Linda Gaskill Hilton, I had my 2nd cousin, James L. Gaskill, (who I have never meet) do the DNA test several years ago by FamilyTreeDNA. Don't know if it helped me much, but I personally have traced my father's line Charley Clay Gaskill back to Robert J. Gaskill, born in Virginia in 1793. From other research (not personally done by myself) our Gaskill line goes back to Taxal, Cheshire, England, John Gaskell, born 1608. I am willing to share any information that may be of interest to you.
