Garvey - Roscommon, Ireland

I have a NJ marriage record for Ellen Garvey (aka Nellie) born abt 1864 that identifies her parents as Bernard Garvey and Ellen Muldoon. Some searching on Ancestry suggests they are from Dysart & Tisara, Ballyforan, Roscommon.

Information also suggests her siblings were Honoria, Brigida, Catharina, Maria, Anna, Rosa Anna, and Bernardus. I used the spellings of names from the records of Catholic Parish Baptisms 1742-1881. One of my issues is that Ellen (aka Nellie) is not among the listed records.

Niske Garvey

I am having real trouble tracing the Garvey side of my family back past 1829. Francis and Emma Garvey are in London in 1871, living in Islington with son, Michael. In 1881 I think that Emma may be recoded as Ann and they are still in London with son, Niske - although I am by no means certain that these are the same people. I have further records for Michael but cannot find anythiung further for Francis or Emma, who are both just listed as coming from Ireland. Any ideas?

Hello Ms. Arlene O'Donnell.

I have not been on this site for a couple years. It was nice to hear from you and your history with my family. I met Sister Mercedes at our home in Philadelphia, PA. around 1960, she had a red hair woman with her as an aid whose name escapes me. My grandfather, Charles was Stephan & Mercedes brother. (they had a total of 7 other siblings for a total of ten children from my great grandfather Charles, (Chassie) Garvey and his wife, Mary Mc Millian Garvey. I know James was a sibling and he played in Stephen band, I believe Thomas, Katie, and Peter were also names of some of the siblings. They lived on Castlebar Street in Castlebar, County Mayo. The Church of Holy Roasary Parish.
My dad was also Charles James Garvey and he was an only child. He had 14 children, (12 boys, 2 girls). I am the 8th oldest. We are from Philadelphia, PA and we all still live in the Philadelphia, area. We are in this order: James, Charles, Jon, Michael, Martin, Joseph, Donald, Walter, Ralph, (first 9 are boys) Theresa, Russell, Marie Stephen, Dennis.
I have been searching for actual recordings of Stephen’s music to no avail over the years. Please feel free to drop a line.

Best regards.

Walter Garvey WalterGarvey@aol.com
You might want to try the Irish Roots online site (it's a fee site). I found one set of gr-gr grandparents marriage and their two oldest children in the records. You can search records for all of Ireland. The site will sometimes grant a number of credits that you can use to preview possible matches -- although they don't always give enough information.

They didn't used to charge for viewing search results but do now ...so make sure if you use them it's when they're having a promotion and giving free credits. If you find a record for which you want to see details, there is a fee.

http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/
Is anyone researching the McNaulty surname? I have a Michael Martin or Martin Michael Garvey who married Catherine Ellen or Elizabeth McNaulty before 1851 in I believe in the United States. She was the daughter of Pat and Catherine McNaulty of Lancashire England where she was born as were her brother James, Hugh and Pat. Martin and Catherine McNaulty Garvey were both found in Louisville, KY in the 1870-1926 time frame. I hope that someone is researching the McNaulty name.

y-dna match between Co. Kerry Garveys and my Troys

My name is Susan Troy. I just found out that my Troys match the Co. Kerry Garveys 35/37 markers. I got my information from www.ysearch.com,
According to my family history, my Troys originated in the Co. Meath/Co. Dublin area. They went to the Co. Limerick/Co. Galway area during the Irish Potato Famine. They arrived in Brooklyn, NY abt 1847.
I don't know how we're related, but we are. Y-DNA doesn't lie.At some point a Garvey adopted a male Troy, or a Troy adopted a male Garvey. This could have happened in the past 6-12 generations, according to the info that I've found.
I guess I should say, welcome to the family, whichever one it is.

Thanks, Loretta, for the suggestions. Hadn't thought of children's passport applications. The DNA project may be another option.

A lot of immigrants named "Thomas Garvey" are in the ship arrival records, several are candidates for my guy. But, a ship in 1858 arrived with a Thomas Garvey (#40 on the list) and Elizabeth Burns (#52) so I'm thinking this may be them.

Thomas and Elizabeth were married in Cincinnati in June 1860, lived in Urbana (Champaign Co, Ohio) for several years and eventually moved to Lucas Co., Ohio. The 1863 CW draft register, the censuses, and their death certs all say just "Ireland." Headstone has only her name, and the church records were burned, twice. His obit doesn't mention place of birth, haven't found one for her yet.

They lived for several years (1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses) either with or close to an older couple named Michael and Mary Thornton. There is a Mary Thornton Garvey on their headstone. Mary could be Thomas's mother, so the Thorntons may be worth tracking down.

Thanks again.

Thomas and Eliz Garvey - Census says "from Ireland" - Now what?

Looking for some advice on what my next step should be. My Great Grandmother was Julia Garvey, b 1863 in Urbana, Champaign Co., Ohio. Her parents, Thomas Garvey and Elizabeth Burns (or Byrne) were both from Ireland, arriving sometime before 1860 when they first appear in the US census. But I have no idea from where in Ireland. Thomas and Elizabeth died in 1908 and 1906, respectively, and Julia passed away in 1921, so everyone who knew them personally is long gone. Naturalization records are my next stop, but where else should I look next for clues as to where they were from in Ireland? An aunt thinks they were from Co. Cork, but she has no real evidence, just family legend. If I can identify the ship they likely came on, are there records in Ireland that might have some clue to emigrants' origins? Thanks

Annie was born in Ireland in 1874 to Mary and came over to England I presume due to her being a teenager pregnant, Annie in 1894 found herself pregnant and in 1895 had Richard Garvey in the Middlesbrough Workhouse there is a trace of her on the 1901 cencus but it seems as she hit hard times and misbehaved after that I can't find anything on her like a marriage or more children

Re: Thomas and Eliz Garvey - Census says "from Ireland" - Now what?

Were Thomas and Elizabeth married before or after they emigrated? What religion were they?

My Garvey gr-gr grandparents emigrated to New York City in 1852. I found them in the Irish Marriage Index but only because my gr-gr grandmother was a Protestant (she converted to Roman Catholic when she married). The fact that she was Protestant means that their marriage was recorded in the Irish civil records. Protestants were recorded from 1845, Catholics not until 1864.

I found Michael and Mrs. Garvey in the passengers lists arriving in New York, May 1852... the timing was right but I couldn't be sure because of "Mrs. Garvey" instead of Johanna; and their ages were slightly off. Well, I finally verified it was them when I found their son's passport application from 1919, he stated that his parents arrived in the U.S., May 1852.

Passenger lists sometimes say where they're from but the further back you go, the more likely it will only say Ireland.

Naturalization records in the mid-1800s usually did not list where they were from, just Ireland.

Do they have a headstone on their grave that includes where they were from? What about an obituary from when they died? My gr-gr grandfather that emigrated to New York City in 1847, died 1863 - found his obituary in the New York Herald, said he was from Newmarket, Cork (he wasn't a Garvey though).

An interment report from the Cemetery may have where they were born (hopefully more than just Ireland).

There's always the Garvey DNA project. If you have a direct line male Garvey descendent Dennis Garvey's DNA project has identified several lines of Garvey's. Mine is the verified family for County Armagh.

Good luck.

Sorry but John b.1807 is not Michael's son.

Michael was born about 1821 in Ireland, his father was James b.1790 Ireland. Michael did have a son named John but he was born 1855 in Manhattan. John b.1855 spent his entire life in Manhattan, aside from several trips back to Ireland. Both Michael and his son John have been thoroughly tracked and all of their children documented and verified.

His children have the same names** and ages as a Michael Garvey shown in 1860 census in Upton, Hardin Co., KY. Here is the 1870 census data:
Name: Martin Garvey
Age in 1870: 45
Birth Year: abt 1825
Birthplace: Ireland
Home in 1870: Louisville Ward 10, Jefferson, Kentucky
Race: White
Gender: Male
Post Office: Louisville
Household Members: Name Age
Martin Garvey 45
Catharine Garvey 50
Ellen Garvey 16 **this child was listed as "Elim" on 1860 Hardin Co., KY census. They both are buried in Lexington, Henderson County, Tennessee.

Here is the 1870 census data:
Name: Martin Garvey
Age in 1870: 45
Birth Year: abt 1825
Birthplace: Ireland
Home in 1870: Louisville Ward 10, Jefferson, Kentucky
Race: White
Gender: Male
Post Office: Louisville
Household Members: Name Age
Martin Garvey 45
Catharine Garvey 50
Ellen Garvey 16 **this child was listed as "Elim" on 1860 Hardin Co., KY census. I believe that the name "Elim" was census taker error. Ages match Michael Garvey in 1860 census.
Mike Garvey 12
Mary Garvey 11
Catharine Garvey 8
