Hi David:
Realize this reply is after the fact but I just now read through the queries on Gartlands. Joan Briton was my 2nd cousin. Owen Gartland and his wife Mary Clark were our great, great, great grandparents. Mary's father was William Clark and her mother was Margaret Perrey (Parry?). After Margaret's death William married Dorothy and they had 2 children.
I don't know if you know this or not but sadly Joan passed away in December 2012. I met her through researching the Gartlands. Not only was she a great source of information but her communications were very entertaining.
Things were not great for Owen and Mary. He was arrested for stealing a flannel shirt in 1855 and sentenced to 2 months hard labor. Mary died in 1869 and for some reason 4 of their 6 children ended up in the Sunderland Union Work House. The youngest Elizabeth was only 6 years old at the time. A distant relative from the Clark side believes she has found documentation that Owen also was in the workhouse. In the 1871 Census he was a lodger in a rooming house. After that he drops off the face of the earth. As far as I can find my great, great grandfather James and his sister Mary Ann, your great, great grandmother are the only 2 of their children that did not go to the workhouse. James went to live with Mary's brother William. The only information I have on Mary Ann is she was a servant in the 1871 Census.
Do you have any information on what happened to Owen or the other children? Also, my information on your great, great grandmother is lacking. Do you have a public tree I could looke at for more accurate info on her?

Thanks,

Kathy McClelland

My Grandfather was John Finglas of Fall River. His daughter was Elizabeth Finglas (Silva) and his son was John (Jack) Finglas of Fall River, Marblehead and Hyannis). The family name has always been spelled Finglas. Elizabeth Finnegan Finglas was my great grandmother whom my mother Elizabeth Finglas was named after. The correct spelling of the their names has always been FINGLAS and not Finglass. Please respect that and update your information to reflect that when referencing.
I worked with a John Gartlan at the Dundalk engineering works in 1969. He was a boilermaker. His family owned the Border Bar.
I left and came to Australia in 1970. I too am a Gartland form South Armagh. My father came from a place called Annagad on the Armagh/Monaghan border. They owned a farm. I have sisters still living there.

Hi Tanya,

I hope that this finds you...

I see that you posted this a few years ago now. I have only just stumbled across your thread, and would love to help out in any way that I can. I would be most interested in any information that you have regarding 'our' family.

First of all, I will introduce myself as Craig Anthony Spiga. I am the first grandson of Selwyn Gartland.

My Mother Sandra Marlene Gartland is the daughter of Selwyn & Marjorie Gartland.

Sandra was born December 20, 1955 in Sydney, Australia. She is the only child from this marriage. A rumour that I have heard, but am unsure as to the accuracy, is that Selwyn had engaged, or married, another lady before meeting Majorie. If this is true, I am unaware of any circumstances surrounding this, sorry.

Sandra married Peter Spiga in 1976. Peter Spiga was born January 4, 1956.

Sandra & Peter had four children:

Craig Anthony Spiga (15 August, 1980) (Birthday shared with Selwyn Gartland)
Julie-Anne Elizabeth Spiga (25 July. 2982)
Scott Selwyn Spiga (4 January, 1985)
Steven Spiga (11 February, 1988) (Birthday shared with Marjorie)

Steven Spiga has one child, Isla Spiga
Scott Spiga has one child, Hunter Spiga

Selwyn Gartland passed away in August, 1984.
Marjorie passed away in February, 1991.

Sandra & Peter have since divorced. Sandra has taken her Maiden name back and goes by the name of Sandy Gartland.

Sandy resides in Airlie Beach which is located on the Central Coast of Queensland, Australia.

Craig, Julie-Anne & Steven reside on the Gold Coast, which is located in South-East Queensland, Australia.

Scott resides in Cairns, which is in the far north Queensland, Australia

If there is any further information that you would like to know regarding my family, please feel free to contact me at my email address, which is: craig.spiga@live.com.au I would be most interested in helping you and learning about my family's past (from my mothers side)

I hope this finds you.

Kindest regards,
Craig

Yes, I think that is very possible. I spotted Martin Gartlan on a U.S. Census a while back just below or above James Gartlan at the Irish Settlement, Newport, Herkimer County, New York. I have not been able to clearly make their connection as siblings but given their vicinity to each other, I am wondering. I have worked my way back to County Monaghan, Ireland but with no real certainties except a birth record for James' son Hugh Gartlan. By the way, I think with 99% certainty that the name was Gartlan without a "d" on the end in Ireland and when they first arrived in Newport, New York. Census, other documents and some family members might have changed to or accepted the "d" on the end and made it "Gartland". I haven't researched this line in months and very much welcome anything that you know or have. Unfortunately, the specific name of "James Gartlan" is/was quite common in County Monaghan around the time of my James Gartlan. James' wife was Hannah Fox. The Fox's and the Gartlan's seem to have been quite close to each other in Newport, New York and may have actually immigrated together from Ireland. I have Hannah from Clontibret and James from Carrickmacross. That's all unsourced but on good clear notes from other family members. Feel free to email me at kristin@zelsersk.net

I doubt your grandfather is related to my great great grandfather who came to America in the late 1700's. He settled in Bedford County, PA. We're not real sure where in Ireland he came from. He did have a lot of children, so it might be possible but I can't be sure without more information on your Patrick Gartland.
Hi

Elizabeth Gartland and William O'Toole were my grandparents.

Elizabeth had I believe brothers Matt, Paddy, Mick, Jack, Brian, Bill and a sister Winnie.(Winefred)

Winnie I believe ended up in the workhouse and later ended up with sisters of charity Donnybrook and a home in Rathdrum. I dont know all the facts!!! She had a daughter who I believe married a Carrol and lives in Tallaght, Dublin.

Brian married a Bridie Fox, Tullow.

I think Elizabeth was born circa 1903. She married William O'Toole. Tehy lived in Shillalegh, Co Wicklow. I have vague menories of visiting her in the cottage just on the edge of Shillalegh, not far from Taylors pub. William was dead by then, I think he died circa 1958.

I think William had two brothers??

They had 10 children I believe: Patrick (my Dad) Brendan, Liam, Mick, Jack, Kathleen, Una? and Lily? I dont know the other two!

I dont have much on the Gartland side of the family. Anything you can provide or verify would be much appreciated. But it appears from your information that My Grandmother is your Grandfathers Sister!! therefore John Gartland and Kate Kearns my Great-Grandparents!!

I think from what I am reading that we must be cousins!!

Brendan O'Toole

You are correct, we are some sort of cousins though I am not exact sure how all that 2nd cousin stuff works!

My mom has the marriage certificate for John and Kate so I know that part is right (though we can't figure out where they are buried). You also have the brothers right. They are all (save Brian & my granddad James) in the same grave yard as your grandparents. They are Michael (Mick), Patrick (Paddy of course), Matthew, John (Jack), Brian (in the UK), and James (in Tullow - my granddad). Winfred became pregnant before she was married, she had twins (I am told) in the home in Rathdrum - that is everything I know about her. Well, that and to say that my granddad had no memory of her. He didn't know about her until he was contacted by one of her children.

My granddad was the youngest, born sometime between 1910 - 1916 (he would never tell and I haven't taken the time to verify the record). Now some family lore... Jack was a runner for the army during the revolution, served with the English in WWI, and possibly WWII. He was the oldest and lived well into his 90's (as did pretty much all of the brothers). I think Mick served too (or possibly it was Matt, I will have to ask my mom).

Isabella Gartland, m. to Stanley Scruby

Hello -

I am looking for information on my maternal grandmother, Isabella Gartland. As my mother was adopted, I know very few details, but please see below for what I have been able to determine:

b. 1920 - Birkenhead,Cheshire, England
d. 2000 - Ontario, Canada
spouse - Stanley Scruby
immgn to Canada: about 1943
children - 5 (2 girls, 3 boys, all still living)

I would very much appreciate any information on either geneology or my grandmother's life story. All I know for certain is that when my mother was about 2 the family was in crisis and she was adopted out.

Many thanks in advance,
Karen

Hello!

Before I start, I should tell you that I don't have any birth/death certificates or anything - just the census records. Quite a bit of my info is also from a relative who is a descendant of James and Lily.

First off, the parents of these particular Gartlands were John James Gartland and Margaret Kelly.

So Lily was the sister of Ethel whose siblings were Abbert Leonard (Lenny), Mona, John (Jack), Margaret, William, Rushton, Gladys, Esther and Dorothy.

Dorothy, Rushton and William all died young.

I'm descended from Lily who as you say, married James Spencer Boylan.

My Dad (Martin - who is James' grandson) remembers Auntie Essie et al (his great Auntie) coming to visit from America around 1976/77 after the bicentennial.

Ethel being your Nan, does that mean you are (or were) a Melling? My dad remembers his dad (David) being friends with Jonny Melling.

Are your family still based in the UK?

Hi,

I've just stumbled across this page.

I'm looking into the Boylan family (of Birkenhead) and my great grandfather (James S Boylan) married a Lily (I think) Gartland in 1919. Him marrying a Gartland is in the marriage register for the time and some digging around tells me it was a Lily. However, I can't find any more info on her.

If anyone else does, please get in touch (or about the Boylans)

Cheers,

Ellie
