Classification: Query
Surnames: Gartland, Kearns, O'toole, Connors
I have some info and am looking to add more.
Here is what I know:
My grandfather James Gartland was born in Boley, as was the rest of his family. His brothers are Michael - "Mick", John - "Jack"(lived in England for many years), Matthew - "Matt", William - "Bill" (lived and buried in England), and Brian. His sisters are Elizabeth - "Lizzy" who married William O'toole (they apparently had several children, enough that at 89 my granddad can’t remember all of them) and Winifred. Very little is known about Winifred because she went to a convent just before my grandfather was born (abt. 1914) and disappears from the family record. All but Bill are buried in the new graveyard in Kilquiggin. All but Bill and Winifred are buried in the new graveyard in Kilquiggin, and I just went to see the graves last month. Additionally I know is that my great-grandfathers name is John Gartland and his wife was Kate (prob. Kathleen) Kearns. I have their wedding certificate showing a May 6th, 1894 marriage. I am told they are buried in the old graveyard in Kilquiggin, but I could not find the yard.

My grandfather is the last of his generation, he lives in Tullow over in Co. Carlow (where my mother was born, more on her in a minute). He married Hannah Connors from Ballon Hill in 1945. My mother lived in England with her maternal aunt Lili Nolan (nea: Connors), married a Hughes from Stafford and they immigrated to the US in 1973. I was born soon after in Boston, Massachusetts.

Lastly my grandfather said that ancestors going back to the 1700’s are buried up in the old graveyard in Knockananna, which I did visit but the stones were almost totally unreadable. I did find one Gartland stone, but with out more information I can’t tell how they are related. He also told me that a Nicloas (spelling?) Gartland immagrated to America from the family, but he doesn't know when.

My grandfather has got me going on the research and I would love to have something to show him when I go over again next year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also if you have info on some of the other surnames I have mentioned I wouldn’t mind that help either.

Thanks very much,
Joanne
