Re: Perry STREETER's research on STOUT/GARRISON/GULICK/OLIPHANT line of Hunterdon/Somerset County, NJ & NY

I am helping a friend trace her Garrison line which is located in NY - Queens & Kings counties. I have just begun working on this line. The furthest back we can go is a Sarah Garrison b. c. 1781 NY. Sarah is a widow in 1850. I have a Nathaniel (NYC ward 5) and a George Garrison (NYC ward 8) in 1820 & 30 who could be her husband & father of Robert H. Garrison.
Her son Robert H. b.c. 1816 is m. to Eliza (Elizabeth) Baker has sons: George, Robert & Stafford, and later Smith (male) and several other children. This family continues to live in NY through 1949, although they eventually move to Staten Is. Robert H is listed variously as a painter and Ferry Pilot and Ferry Master. Eliza's brother is a boatman, and their son Robert D. is a Ferry Man & Ferry Master. Does this match up with any of your Garrison lines?

Ruth:

There is a Garretson farm/house in Fair Lawn (Bergen County) and a Wyckoff Garretson farm in Somerset County. Which one are you referring to? Or is there another one? I am told the the Passaic County Historical Society at Lambert Castle in Woodland Park has volumes of Garretson information.

Thank you,
Margaret

That was great work you did. There is a Garretsen farm that is on the historical registry and Garret Garretsen is associated with that. Years ago I emailed the Park supervisor and she was hoping I could shed light on the family's history. I thought she would be able to help me. If you make more headway at Trenton, perhaps you could send it along to them if it is applicable. I'll look up the address of the homestead and get it back to you.
Thanks for all your work.
Ruth

Hi Ruth: Any luck with the Hudson County Clerk's Office?

I was able to ascertain that Robert M. ("Morrow") Garretson/Garrison's father was Garrett VW (Van Wagener) Garretson/Gerritsen. Garrett and wife were married at the Church on the Green in Hackensack , NJ in 1819. The image is on familysearch.org

Still looking for date of death of Robert M. I am planning a Trenton trip over the next few weeks.
Thank you, Margaret in NJ

FTDNA holiday sale prices

Well, it's that time of year again. Family Tree DNA has announced their holiday sale prices on DNA testing. They have discounted so many tests and upgrades that I will not attempt to list them all here. As an experienced DNA Project Administrator and participant I will say a little about my favorites.

Y-DNA testing
There are so many participants in the Garrison and other projects that you now stand a good chance of finding a match IF YOU ORDER AT LEAST 37 MARKERS. The 12 and 25 marker tests cannot tell you who you are related to. They can only tell you who you are NOT related to. Even a 25 marker “match” can fall completed apart when upgraded to 37 or more markers. The 67 marker test give you even more information but if cost is a factor it's better to order the 37 marker test than to wait until you can afford 67 markers. With FTDNA you can always upgrade later. If you tested in the past and do not have at least 37 marker results, it's time to upgrade so you can see some real benefits from testing.

FAMILY FINDER (autosomal)
This is a relatively new test for both males and females that looks at all of the DNA you have inherited from all of your ancestors. I have had both the FTDNA and the Ancestry test. The sale price at FTDNA is $199 if you order this test alone or upgrade a current kit. Don't be deceived by the $99 rate offered by Ancestry into thinking you are only paying half as much for the same thing. There are differences and one of them makes a huge difference. Ancestry does not, and apparently does not plan to, offer you the opportunity to download your own raw data. The only way you will get any benefit from the Ancestry test is if both you and your matches are willing to post a public tree or to exchange them privately. Wading through your results is very slow because there is no ability to search your results for such things as “all matches with the surname of ______ in their ancestry.” With FTDNA you are asked to post a GEDCOM tree but it can only be seen by your matches. If compiling a GEDCOM is beyond your abilities you can post a list of your ancestral surnames along with your farthest back paternal and maternal ancestors. FTDNA offers great search abilities, security for your tree, and the ability to download your raw data which allows you to use third party websites for comparing your information with other people.

If you can do it, I recommend the 37 marker Y-DNA test and the Family Finder at FTDNA as your gift to yourself and your family. I haven't gotten involved in mtDNA testing so I can't tell you much about that but I'm sure you can find others who will recommend it.

With any of these tests you get more out of it if you put more into it. In other words, the folks who are having the autosomal tests and then not posting their trees and not responding to emails are getting very little benefit from testing. A few may benefit by looking at the information posted by their matches but that isn't really fair, to take but not to give anything in return.

Be sure you join a project before ordering a test so that you get the lowest possible rate and also some support by the volunteer administrators of the projects.

Karen Back Simmons
Volunteer Administrator
Garrison DNA Project at FTDNA
Bach to Back DNA Project at FTDNA
gtskjs@gmail.com

I will check the Hudson County clerk's office. I got the info about the fire from the Trenton people.
Catherine was born in 1849. I can't assume that she was the first. Due to Sarah's age in 1850, I'd place the marriage around 1843 to 1848.
Religion is tough. My mother's side of the family has a lot of unexplained things. According to my mother, her parents were Catholic, but her mother sang in an Episcolpalian choir in NYC and the family was ex-communicated because they were too poor to be buried in consegrated ground. They are buried in a Methodist cemetery and my mother was a Presbyterian.
Sarah was born in NJ as well as her parents. Her husband was born in New York State. I don't know how he came to NJ or why, but in the next census I believe they are in NYC and stay there until his death in 1888, then Sarah moves in with her other daughter back to Jersey City/Hoboken where she dies in 1903. My father's side of the family is a piece of cake compared to my mother's.
Please contact me by my email, it may be easier:
RevRuth@gmail.com
Ruth

Hi Ruth: Thanks for your response. I saw the 1850 census a few days ago can figured Jacob was Robert's brother.

Robert M. Garretson used "Garretson" the two times he registered for the Civil War draft. I know it's him because his occupation is listed as "painter."

Have you ever contacted the Hudson County Clerk's office for marriage records?

On the marriage cert of William Henry Miller and Josephine Garrison, the officiant was Rev. John S. Longmore, JCM. I tried to find out what denomination this is and I think it is Presbyterian.

As far as alternate sources for records, if you know what religion they were, you could find the church records. Are you sure the all got married in NJ?

My friend, Richard King, is a great-great grandson of Robert M. Garrison and his second wife, Elizabeth.

I was able to get the marriage cert of Josephine Garrison and William Henry Miller at the NJ State Archives in Trenton on Monday.

Thank you,
Margaret in NJ

Please view 1850 census using name Sarah J. Farley or husband Charles Farley:

Home: Van Vorst, Hudson Co., New Jersey

Charles 28
Sarah 26
Catherine: Daughter 1
Robert M. Garretson 21
Anna Garretson 21
Jacob Garretson 16

Sarah is my g-g-grandmother. In the family Bible her maiden name is written: Garrison.
There was a common practice to anglicize Dutch names and I believe that her name was actually Garretson.
I am assuming that Robt. and Anna were married and that Jacob was Sarah's brother as well as Robt.
I tried to get marriage cert. from Trenton and was told that they were local records and most likely destroyed in a fire. I got Sarah's d.c. and although I can tell you were she died and from what, when it came to listing her parents, it was written: "Unable to learn". I don't know of any other way to find out who Sarah, Robt. and Jacob's parents were.
Ruth

Hey folks,

Family Tree DNA (FTDNA.com) has notified Project Administrators of a great sale BUT it's only 48 hours. These prices will expire at Midnight Saturday. It's a great time to get involved in DNA for genealogy or upgrade your current markers. The copy and paste lost something in the "copy and paste" but I think you'll get the idea. The first number is the usual price, the second number is the sale price.

I found a bit more information. It appears James was a farmer and lived outside Girard. Garret G. "Garry" Garretson was the manager of a lumber company in Girard and in the 1920 census was living on Madison Street in Girard. Is that a match?

I found this in The History of Girard on genealogytrails.com:

"Daniel Macknett came to Girard in 1854, and established a lumberyard which he owned until 1893. It was then purchased by G.G. Garrettson who still owned the business at the time of the Girard Centennial in 1955. His establishment was the oldest building on the square at that time. His son Gordon took over the buiness, it was sold then to Herbert and Shirley Leach."

This from Girard (Ill.). Historical Committee.History of Girard, Illinois, from then 'til now, 1855-1955:

"G. G. Garretson came to Girard as a business man in 1883. He became interested in the lumber business in 1898 and after these 72 continuous years, still goes to the office every day."

The parents of G. G. and James L. Garretson appear to have come to Illinois from Somerset Co., NJ. The father was William S. Garetson and the mother was Ida M. Low(e).

Karen

There appears to be two possibilities. James and Garret Garretson both have households in Girard in the 1910 census. They are brothers. In the 1870 census they were living in Montgomery County with their parents and siblings. In the 1880 census they were living in Monmouth Co NJ as boarders. Their census entries through the years show that both their parents were born in New Jersey. Garret appears to have sometimes used the initials G. W., James was James L. Garret's wife was Della, James' was Gussie. Do you have any clues as to which of these two might have built your house?

Karen

Importing of DNA test results

The volunteer administrators for the Family Tree DNA Surname Projects received the information which is copied below. The Garrison DNA Project has already added two Garrisons who were tested by other companies. This is a great (cheap!) opportunity to have non-FTDNA test results added to the huge database at FTDNA. Those who try it should be pleasantly surprised at the benefits. If you have questions feel free to contact any of the administrators of the Garrison DNA Surname Project.

Karen Simmons
Co-Administrator
Garrison DNA Project at FTDNA
gtskjs@gmail.com

********************************
We are pleased to announce the launch of a new feature we hope will benefit your projects: Y-DNA "Third Party" uploads.

This will allow for the upload of 33 and 46-marker Y-DNA test results from Ancestry, GeneTree and Sorensen's SMGF. This was a natural development since the necessary tools were created to import the DNA Heritage database after they ceased operations. While the DNA Heritage transfer is free of charge as a result of that acquisition, we will be charging a nominal fee of $19 per person to import third party results into Family Tree DNA. This $19 fee will be credited to customers who order upgrades or add-ons.

For an additional $39, customers who transfer their third party results will also have additional markers tested so that they can receive matches to Family Tree DNA's 25 or 37-marker level, ancestral origins, and other features of the personal page.

Please forward the following link to those who may be interested in ordering the Third Party transfer:

http://www.familytreedna.com/landing/ydna-transfer.aspx

What do you get when you transfer third party results?
The $19 fee will provide the customer with a Family Tree DNA personal page which will allow them to join Family Tree DNA projects freely. This means results will be available to the administrator and included on the project's public page for comparison with other project members.

The $58 fee ($19 transfer fee + $39 for the added markers to Family Tree DNA's 25 or 37-marker level) will include the same features provided to Family Tree DNA customers in their personal pages.
FTDNA Father's Day Sale

Family Tree DNA has announced a Father's Day sale on Family Finder and Y-DNA upgrades. The sale ends at Midnight June 22 so don't wait.

If you had a 12 or 25 marker test and have not upgraded, you need to do it now. As DNA testing for genealogy has evolved, we now know that 12 and 25 marker tests have very limited usefulness in determining or verifying your lineage. The database has grown and a 37 or 67 marker test has a much better chance of providing you with useful information.

Contact your Project Administrator or go to your Personal Page at FTDNA to take advantage of this sale.

Karen Simmons
Co-Administrator
Garrison DNA Project
gtskjs@gmail.com

Henry Garretson and Minnie Garretson of Peoria, IL

Henry - born abt 1836 and Minnie about 1839. These are my great grandparents and I am trying to locate information on what happened to them. They indicate that their bp is Prussia in the 1870 census and they list my grandfather Freddy Garretson ( a twin) as a son. (actually Frederic Gerretsen was the correct spelling of his name). Then the next census shows that they are 10 yrs old and move in with the Lodder's. What does not match is Mary Lodder's birthdate - if Mary remarried or if Minnie and Mary are 2 different people. Then what happened to Henry? They had two other sons, John who was born abt 1864 and William who was born abt 1877 and they were born in Butler, Ohio. Does anyone have any info on this family?

Sale on DNA tests halfway over

There has been very good response already to the holiday sale prices on DNA testing from Family Tree DNA. There are several new project members and kits have been ordered for new participants.

At least one of these participants was recruited by a researcher who was not a Garrison/Garretson male but as a Garrison descendant, they had an interest in having that line tested. If you do not have a male Garrison/Garretson in your close family, you can go looking for a likely participant. As long as that male is a direct all-male descendant of your Garrison/Garretson ancestor, they could be the answer to your puzzle. Sometimes all you need to do is ask, and of course make it clear that you will pay for the test.

More participants mean there’s a better chance of finding a match.

Half of the one month sale on Family Tree DNA tests through a Project has now passed. Don't wait too long.

Karen Simmons
gtskjs@gmail.com

John "Jack" Garrison of Orange Co NC & Sumner Co TN

Recently the Garrison DNA Project received the results of an upgrade for an older kit. The 12 marker kit was upgraded to 37 markers with very good results. Kit number N88084 can now be placed in the yellow group with the descendants of Hendrik Garretson of New Castle DE and also the descendants of James Garrison & Hester Roberts.

The following is the lineage for this donor:

Kit # N88084
7. John “Jack” Garrison b. 1750-1760, d. July 3, 1853 Sumner Co TN, m. Catharine Gomer
6. William Garrison b. 1781-1790 North Carolina d. about 1831 m. Elizabeth Williams March 4, 1830 Sumner Co TN
5. Thomas Wilkinson Garrison b. December 22, 1830 Sumner Co TN, m. Sarah Ann Davis
4. William John Garrison b. September 28, 1851 d. April 15, 1885 m. Sarah Elizabeth Miller
3. Ezra Garrison b. 1880 d. 1945, m. Lula May Absher
2. Not disclosed
1. Living, not disclosed

This Garrison line migrated to Saline Co IL along with many related families including McMurtry, Trusty, Williams, & Forister shortly after the 1830 census.

There had been a long-held belief that old John “Jack” Garrison of Sumner Co TN had come from Orange Co NC along with several other Orange County families. This DNA evidence backs that up. Because this kit was upgraded to 37 markers, we now know that this participant is a perfect 37/37 match to one of the descendants of James & Hester Garrison and a genetic distance of just one from two descendants of Hendrik Garretson of New Castle DE and two descendants of James & Hester. Those matches are close enough to indicate a very close relationship.	The results are posted on the Garrison DNA Project YDNA results page.

The lesson here is, if you or your participant tested fewer than 37 markers, it’s time for an upgrade. The large number of Garrison results in the database now make it more likely that you will find a close match. A 12 or 25 marker test may tell you who you are NOT related to but cannot confirm who you ARE related to. A 67 marker test may help further define the relationships.

Karen Simmons
Descendant of James Garrison of Carteret Co NC

Hey Garrisons, Garrasons, Garretsons etc!

Family Tree DNA just announced their Holiday price reductions. Great sales on their most popular tests.

YDNA 37 markers $119
YDNA 67 markers $199
mtDNAPlus $129
Family Finder $249
Upgrade to Family Finder $229

Last year a lot of folks waited just a little too long to get their orders in. FTDNA says they will not extend the deadline of December 31, 2010.

Go to the Garrison Surname Project page at

http://www.familytreedna.com/project-join-request.aspx?group...

and fill out the join request form. Or go to their home page and send email to any of the addresses listed if you have questions.

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/garrisonscompass/default...

Our “B-Garrisons of Georgia” group has had great results from DNA testing. Without DNA we would still be facing the same brick wall. As you can see on the results page, there are now a lot of Garrison results for comparison. Thank you to those folks who were the pioneers and thought their results didn’t mean much because they were not seeing matches. Now they’re seeing matches. Several of the groups have made major breakthroughs this year.

It’s a good time to order that kit you’ve been putting off.

Karen Simmons
Descendant of James & Jane Garrison of Carteret NC

When the family gets together for the holidays, it could be an excellent time to bring up DNA testing for genealogy. A person full of good food and warm memories may just be ready to help you make the plunge. Family Tree DNA offers a discounted price to members of a DNA Project. You can use the “join” feature on the project’s home page or email one of the administrators for more information.

Remember, although women cannot be the donors for YDNA matching, they can sponsor a male family member such as a brother or cousin. Several family members can jointly sponsor the donor, sharing the cost.

With so many different family groups in the Garrison DNA Project, you now have a greater likelihood of finding a match. My own family group has had great success with DNA testing. We were able to eliminate a lot of false connections and focus our research on true relatives.

Karen Simmons
Descendant of Zebulon Garrison

Re: Van der Hoff Quaker records in W.B. Fetter's book, Six Columbiana Co OH Pioneer Fam, Vol 5

Hello again Kay,

Since I know you will have a few questions on this Quaker, Cornelius GARRETSON, b.c. 1734 [this date being taken from author FETTER's entry], here are a few more details. This is a continuation of my previous posting to you.

Realize that I did not mention parents for him, due to the question mark preceding his name, in the child #3 of 6 kids slot. So it appears author, FETTER, questions his own entry of Cornelius as the third child, or some other issue. This ?Cornelius 1734 is listed with siblings (specified as being in no order ): Garret bc 1732, Cullender died 1772 (Catherine Beech named as his wife), ?Cornelius c1734 (himself), Mary, Charity NORRIS, Margaret RULY. Parents of these six kids seem to be/may be? John GARRETSON (died by 4 Sept 1783) m 11 December 1729 New Castle MH, Margaret COLLENDER, daughter of Nicholas COLLENDER of New Castle Co, DE. You will note that the parents had issues with the New Castle Preparative Meeting, 19 July 1758, et al two years after Cornelius' certificate of removal was issued, 1756--The parents were disowned by Wilmington MM on 14 Jun 1759 [fn14 citing to ________] or three years after the 1756 certificate. The problem seems to do with "binding his children to those of other Societies"- so perhaps other religions interfered?

But when FETTER discusses Margaret COLLENDER Garretson's will signed by her (the mother) on 4 Sept 1783, but proved two years later, in New Castle DE, 24 Aug 1785 (after the mother died), I do not readily see any son named Cornelius in the abstract info provided by the very thorough author. So would we have to assume that this Cornelius died before she signed it, 1783...or before it was proven, 1785, and somewhere his name could have been crossed off (wishful thinking here...).or some other issue making Fetter question his placement in this family grouping...

If the names of Samuel WANDEWARE or William LAND, two named grandchildren (in the mother's will) could be tied into the line, it may help Fetter's family grouping, but it might not help with Cornelius 1734...

Fetter does state that the West River MM records contain the births of two children of Cornelius and Priscilla [Hutchinson?] Garretson: John Hutchinson Garretson b. 1764, and Thomas Garretson b. 1765. Yes the ? of Priscilla's surname is also that of Fetter, so whether she is named Priscilla Hutchinson is unclear...

Should anyone have insight into this important family grouping, please post in reply to this message thread. Thanks!

Dee in Cincy
Dir., POOLE DNA Project & Allied Families, using lab, FTDNA

Hello Kay,

As I think you know, things have been quite busy this year in the POOLE DNA Project & Allied Families, with trying to help sort out our GARRETSON/GARRISON participants lines...

I am trying to find out if you have ever studied the author, W.B. Fetter's incredibly detailed and documented with original sources series...Six Columbiana County Ohio Pioneer Families, the books, have a wonderful section in Leech-Garretson, on "Jan Gerritsen Vanderhofe" (to use the page headings here)-- Importantly, I copied some pages from Volume 5, when I was up in Columbus, OH, Pub Lib, Grant Ave? was it, where the volumes from the former State Library of Ohio were transferred to (perhaps a few years ago now...the genealogy items all transferred to downtown, but the state library still exists...). It is R 929.309771 C726 F421s, if I am reading my notes correctly. On pg 331, there is a reference which may be important. It cites to footnote 18, but it doesn't appear that I copied the page with the footnotes...

This is the section about Quaker records of 1756: Wilmington Monthly Meeting (around New Castle DE area it seems) granting a 14 Oct 1756 certificate of removal to a Cornelius Garretson, born c1734 "who had already settled within the verge of West River Meeting, south of Annapolis, MD." (FN 18). Significant, further info is given here also..."he Descended from Parents who are friends...Left our Parts, being the Place of his Nativity when but a lad and went to Philadelphia, where he Dwelt for some years." [pg 331, source cited infra]

Has your tireless research group ever reviewed this incredible book and its cited, underlying sources, like this footnote eighteen? Please post the fn18 in a reply here when you or someone out there sees it...

If only everyone could learn to cite sources like author, Fetters! I wish I had read this book ten years ago...it spans far more than just Ohio on the complex Garretson VAN DER HOFF lineages. Its a must read for anyone working on this paper trail line and its Y-DNA patterns. An excellent reference for all of us.

Dee in Cincy
Dir.,POOLE DNA Project & Allied Families using lab, FTDNA
Hi Dee,

I have not looked at the book in question. I have pretty much left that part of it to Ted Garretson in TN. I get into trouble with this part of it. Ted is the best in the group of us in working on this line. He is the one who has done wonders for the Garretson side of our family.

As you know we had no idea of where to start to verify William M. Garretson our grgrgrandfather on my husband's line. Since Ted has been involved not only that has been solved but a definite parents of William M. have been found and so many Garretson's in this line it's mind boggling.

I have not been as active in the research for a few months. It was simply too much at one time for me and I got overwhelmed with other things going on with my family.

I'm sorry I can't offer much imput here other than we may have worn Ted out as he has been traveling, looking at microfilms and reading books like crazy. He has several years on me but a much clearer concept with these things. I can read what you're saying but with me not being so involved with the Cornelius part of it I think Ted is the better person to ask about this.

Thank you for your information and imput!

Kay

It's always been a curiousity to me how the Gerritsen/Garritsen families moved from NY>NJ>southern states:ie.TN, TX, etc.
My 8th great grandmother m. 1st Willem Gerritsen and 2nd Gerrit Remmersen. It was through a bible kept by a son from 2nd marriage that the NYG&B Society was able to publish much of her early families history.

I have some data transcribed by David Tourism from his library of "old books" that include the surnames Gerritse/Gerritsen/Garrison/Garretson, etc.
If you are interested in this data please contact me at nt regular e-mail address:
rrw122433@aol.com
Richard Williamson
Tucson, AZ

Hi Ginny,

Thanks for getting back.......I agree and believe that the first name "Reed" came from a maternal line.

With the common places (NJ, Virginia, Ohio, ILL and IN), and, the first name "Reed" appearing in two generations (i.e. Reed GARRETSON b.1791 NJ and his son also with that name born abt 1830 Ohio), plus, the Reed GARRETSON born abt 1817 Ohio who married Emeline BRADFORD I think it is likely that who ever was the mother of Reed GARRETSON born 1791 NJ was also likely the grandmother of Reed GARRETSON born 1817 Ohio.

I think you're right in assuming there is a family connection somewhere back. Reed doesn't seem to be a common surname, so I wonder if somewhere back there was a garrison wife with the maiden name of Reed. It was tradition to name a child with the mothers maiden name.
Sometimes it's used as a middle name.
Do you know his wife's maiden? I ask because mid-1700's, alot of the NJ folks ended up in VA, and from there on to either IL or OH.
I have never heard of Reed, but I will keep my eyes open for you.
I know the HANDS lived in CAPE MAY NJ from 1690. They met up with the GARRETTSON/GARRISON's somewhere along the way. I know they spread out through the state. Some were living in Rahway, county unknown to me, mid 1700's.
I would get a map, and check out some counties for the names.
GINNY
Looking for parents of Reed GARRETSON (Garrison etc) born about 1817 Ohio ~ father supposedly born NJ, mother born Virginia.

I first find Reed GARRETSON in 1850 Census living Posey, Switzerland County, Indiana, he married Emeline BRADFORD in 1846 in the same place.

From Indiana Reed GARRETSON moved to Snachwine, Putnam Co., Illinois and is lised there in the 1860 census. By 1870 census he is living Madelia, Watonwan Co., Minnesota....in 1880 census he is living Rosendale, still Watonwan Co.

Going back to earlier census I find several GARRETSON/ GARRISON families who hold some promise to being related but no definite connections have been made to date.

These families are all living in Warren County Ohio in 1840 census ~ John, Reed and William GARRISON all living Salem, Warren Co., Ohio and Jacob GARRISON living Wayne, Warren Co., Ohio.

It does not seem likely that the Reed GARRETSON b.1817 Ohio that I am looking for is the son of Reed GARRISON living Salem Ohio in 1840....my reason for that is that the latter did have a son named Reed GARRETSON but born 1830 (listed in 1850 census at Salem Ohio) and my Reed GARRETSON is already married by 1846 and living Posey, Indiana.

I find that the Reed GARRETSON/GARRISON listed at Salem Ohio in 1840 an 1850 removed to Deer Creek Indiana and his wife's name was Jane. The interesting thing about this couple is that this Reed GARRETSON was born about 1791 in New Jersey and his wife, Jane, was born about 1795 in Virginia (Delaware).....so the same places that my Reed GARRETSON's parents are supposedly born.

It appears likely that the John, Reed, William and Jacob GARRETSON/GARRISON found in early census are brothers, if not all brothers then certainly seems they are related, and, born New Jersey. There is a Joseph GARRETSON listed Warren, Belmont County, Ohio in 1820 census ~ perhaps their father or another older brother who maybe the father of my Reed GARRETSON b.1817?

Further information to clarify relationships of these families much appreciated, especially anything regarding Reed GARRETSON (Garrison) born about 1817 Ohio.

Thanks

DNA results for Delaware Garretsons

The B-Delaware Lines of the Garrison’s Compass Project at Family Tree DNA have received the most exciting results yet. Recent results support the lineage of John Garretson/Garrison & Elinor Robinson Garrison of New Castle DE.

Results of a 67 marker test for kit # 162067 have been posted and he has several close and perfect matches. The donor is someone who has been researching his Garrison roots for many years and was reasonably sure of his origins. He had traveled to Maury Co TN and Franklin Co GA to research his ancestors. His test results will help others who are less certain to connect with their proper family. His family is one of the Garrison families that migrated to Montgomery County Illinois. His direct line moved on to southwest Missouri and then to Kansas.
The lineage:
Elizabeth Hendricks
Hendrik Garretson & Ann
Garret Garretson & Elizabeth Ericksen
John Garretson & Elinor Robinson
*John Garrison & Delila Baker
Elias Baker Garrison & Mary “Polly” Evans
Elias Alexander Garrison & Margaret Ann Pickering
John Baker Garrison & Lucile Maughlin
Kit # 162067

The following birth record ties this line to the ancestors in New Castle DE.

*1764-John born April 16th, baptized May 11th; parents, John and Eleanor Garritson
The records of Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) Church, Wilmington, Del., from 1697
by Holy Trinity Church (Wilmington, Del.) 1890, page 604

John & Delila lived for a time in Franklin Co GA near his mother Elinor and several of his siblings. John is listed as an unsuccessful drawer in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery along with his mother Elinor and his brothers Caleb, James and Zebulon.
1805 Georgia Land Lottery Persons Entitled to Draws
Compiled by Paul K. John’s brother James Garrison and Delila’s sister Margaret Baker had married each other and moved to Montgomery County IL before the 1820 census along with other Baker families. James Garrison died and Margaret returned to Georgia. Delila was soon followed to Illinois by John’s younger brother Zebulon and his family. All of them and other related families lived within walking distance of each other in southwestern Montgomery County.
Index to White Marriages In Franklin County, Georgia 1806 - 1903
Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales, Illinois State Archives
1820 Federal Census, Bond Co., IL
1825 Illinois State Census, Montgomery Co., IL
Arphax Family Maps, Montgomery Co IL

Two of John & Delila’s sons were the first and second husbands of Zebulon’s daughter Rebecca Garrison.
Montgomery County Illinois marriage records, Illinois State Archives

Space limitations do not allow the postings of the large volume of proofs which exist for this family to this site. Garretson in 1870 has a farm in Hillsborough, Somerset County, New Jersey. I can't confirm it as yet.
Any info on parents of the above? Probably b. around 1800?
Thanks,
Ruth

Garrison or Garretson with Delaware connections

With the approaching holidays, some of the testing companies are offering DNA testing at a reduced rate. It’s a good time to get involved.

Our Delaware research group currently has nine participants who were tested by FTDNA and one tested by Ancestry along with quite a few researchers who are not DNA participants. Please note when going to FTDNA’s homepage and typing in the surname Garrison, three surname projects will be listed for Garrison. We are part of the largest project, Garrisons’ Compass, and are listed as B-Garr*son Delaware Lines. The results of our nine are publicly posted on the Garrisons’ Compass YDNA results page.

If you think you may have ties to Garrison or Garretson in Delaware, Orange Co NC, or Franklin Co GA we would love to hear from you. You do not have to be interested in DNA testing.

Karen
gtskjs
@
mvn.net
