I have only just found messages on this web site, the latest is 2012. I am so grateful to all who have contributed to the thread as I am a descendant of those above. My connection to them is their son William, his son John, his son Ralph Victor and his son (my father) Ralph. John had two marriages with around 23 children. From what I read another brother of William came to Victoria. I would like to know more about him and any more on John and Susannah if possible. EG where are they buried? I am happy to pass any information on to help with research.

Kind regards
Cheryl Stevens
cherylmstevens@hotmail.com

Hi Lyndy sorry for the delay in replying but I've not looked on here for a few weeks as I've been corresponding with someone in the US over a part of the Miller family I didn't know about. I don't want to divulge their name here on an open forum but I believe from her that you and she have already been in touch. Mary Ann Miller was one of seven siblings and all but one of them had families of their own. I have started to develop these families going forward. Two of the brothers emigrated to the US and both had large families that I'm hoping to find more about. I have Mary Ann's birth cert and the marriage cert of George Harry Garlick's parents. There are too many names and dates to put on here but if you would like to share further what we may both have you can contact me directly on "roger.fish@virgin.net".
Hoping to hear from you shortly
Kind regards
Roger Fish

I would love to know more about Mary Anne Miller - she is my great grandmother and I know nothing about her - her son James Lyndon Garlick, my grandfather, emigrated from England in 1908 and lived for almost 30 years in Papua New Guinea and worked as a civil servant there. His first wife Alice King was unable to have children and after her death from colon cancer in 1935 )(I think) in Sydney, he met my grandmother Charlotte Annie White and married her very quickly. My mother Philipa Anne Garlick was born ten months after their marriage in Samurai, a part of Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea.
James Lyndon Garlick died when his baby daughter was only four months old, of peritonitis following a ruptured appendix. My mother never knew her father at all, and her mother returned with her to Sydney to live. She never remarried and died when I was three or four 23 Mar 1961.
Any info on Mary Anne Miller and her parents would be most gratefully welcomed.
Kind regards
Lyndy Cracknell

Hi Geoff, I ran across your replies on a thread and believe you may be able to push my lot back further and maybe find a link. My name is Tim Garlick and I trace my line back to wilts in the 18th century but lose track in mid-century. I descend from a Rev George Garlick who was rector at Malmesbury with Westport and married to an Ann 1719-1779. He was born in 1754 and died in 1822, the year after his son who was also called George and was born in Westport Malmesbury in 1786. George the younger was also a churchman and ministered in Painswick, Gloucestershire between about 1810 and his death.
Before George the elder things are much too vague for my liking. It seems likely that he ministered close to his origins. I tentatively have George being the son of John Garlick 1717-92 and Ann 1719-79. They had, I think, 4 other sons; William Bennett Garlick M.D 1756-1841, Thomas Garlick a surgeon, 1743-1770, Daniel Garlick 1737-1770 and finally John Garlick, brewer, 1730-92.
Before this I have nothing, yet they clearly were a family of means and cannot have sprung from the earth. Can you help?
Kind RegardsTim Garlick
Hi Joe

I was looking at this thread after a long absence to refresh my memory on a Garlick connection and saw your post from Nov 2013. It seems we have a strong connection. Mary Ann Miller was my gt grandmother which means we are both descended from Alexander and Mary Ann's father (also an Alexander Miller). I hadn't done much to trace forward the other siblings as some disappeared from the census record. I now realise that two of the brothers went to America.
I would be most interested in sharing whatever information we have.

Kind regards

Roger

Two projects have been started there: Garlock/Garlick and Palatine that takes in the Palatines who came to the US beginning in the early 1700s.

If you are female and can't test, why not be a sponsor?
There is a DNA project at FamilyTree DNA for Palatines which includes all the the name variations of Garlick, Garlock, etc.

A second project is also available under Garlick. It would be wonderful if all male Garlocks, Gerlocks, Carlocks, etc. contact FTDNA.com and purchase a DNA kit. Are we all related or from separate lines? DNA is the only way I know of that this question can be answered.

Are there any direct line male descendants of Stephen Garlick and Eve Young willing to take a DNA test? If so, may I suggest you test through Family Tree DNA: http://www.familytreedna.com/

We finally have a tester who will soon be taking the test. He is a descendant of David Garlick, son of Stephen and Eve. It would be great if all of Stephen's sons were represented. Direct line females are eligible for the mtDNA test. I still don't kunderstand what female testing really can find.

kaeh

Hello, I haven't worked on this in a while myself and see your 2011 posting. All I could find in the old courthouse/church records in Youngstown was that Bertha Lopin/Loppin's father and mother were born in Germany. It didn't say where or their religious background. I would doubt that they were Jewish in Germany then switched when they got here to Lutheran or German Reformed. I have a cousin researcher who claimed that there were some Jewish roots in the German past. I told her we needed proof which she could not produce. To me it seems she was trying to make the her feelings match the facts. Just the opposite of what I have tried t do the past 25 years. Berth'as parents:
Godfried and Henrietta (Gralke) Lopin/Loppin, they were both born in Lepwald, East Prussia, Germany.

HI,
I did get a reply from Canada - I knew a branch had gone there. My link is through the Morris family - Mary Julia married a Garlick. One of the Morris boys also went to Canada - Thomas Lewis Morris - sister to Mary Julia.

JOyce

Hello again, Kathleen,

A bit more.......Mary Ann Pickard was the sister to my Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Pickard. they were, along with siblings, children of Joseph Pickard and his wife Fanny nee Allen.

Catherine Lois Morris was not only related to me through the above link but married my Great-Uncle. I knew her - called her Auntie Kitty.

The links between the Johnson/Morris/Pickard and Pickering families are a bit convoluted!
I have decided to send my email address so I can send you more.

jtrousdale@talktalk.net

Best wishes

Joyce

We live in WA. Albert James Garlick, b1867, whose father was John, whose father was William, whose father was John & Susannah, married in Eaglehawk, Vic and eventually came over here. Lost his wife in Kalgoorlie, 1900, remarried my grandmother Rose Stroud. Moved to Katanning, WA, where we live. Hence there are quite a few Garlick's in WA. 4 boys by the 1st marriage, & same with the 2nd! Three boys from 1st family went to WW1, two died. Carl Eric Garlick and Clive Lancelot Garlick. We have had plaques put under a tree in Kings Park, Perth, during a dedication ceremony, a couple of years ago, & had a reunion with some of the descendants of the 1 st marriage.
Interesting to read some of the postings that have been put on the board. I didn't know that William and George convicts)had a brother Henry come to Aust too, so thanks for those who have put that on record. All the best. Neville

Phillip/ William Garlick

Could anyone help me with my family tree and in particular any information about my Great Grandfather Phillip/William Garlick born approx 1879 in Cheltenham Gloucester.

1911 census he is registered as Phillip married to Lydia Jones with 3 children Edward, Phyllis (my grandmother)and Frederick with a 4th child, Philip, born in 1915. My Nan always knew her father as Philip and his name is on the war memorial in Aberbargoed as Philip. However his war medals and marriage certificate indicate that his name was William Garlick. At the time in 1911 the family were living in Mynyddislwyn and the census confirms that Phillip was born in Cheltenham Gloucester but I have been unable to trace any further back than 1911. We believe Phillip/William was from a farming family possibly born in Fairview. His fathers name is given as Charles on the marriage certificate. He was in the 8th Battalion Cheshire Regiment and died in the great war in 1916 and is buried in Iraq.

His wife was Lydia (Jones) who was born in Ruabon Denbighshire. We know from the marriage certificate that they didn't get married until 1915 possibly before he went away to war. I would love to know more about their story and how they met as it's all a bit of a puzzle at the moment. I know from my Nan's birth certificate and the marriage certificate that Lydia couldn't write as she signs her name with a X. However Phillip/William has beautiful writing on the 1911 census. I suspect there is a big scandal somewhere but I have so little information. Census and birth record searches are so far drawing blanks.

Any information at all would be greatly appreciated

Kind regards

Lisa
Hi Bonnie,

I haven't had much luck with the contact details you kindly gave me for Huge. Would you be able/willing to pass my details on to him or contact him on my behalf please? I really would like to try and research my family tree a bit further but at the moment I seem to have run out of options!

Kindest regards

Lisa Ekman

John Garlick - Mary Sleighter

Interested in finding out information on John Garlick (b. ~1808) and Mary Sleighter (b. ~1809), specifically on their parents. I have heard Sleighter might be German and is pronounced "Slickter" but I have been unable to find out much info about her line other than her father's name might be Daniel.

I have John's parents as Adam Garlick and Sarah Morris. Any information on the Morris family will be especially appreciated. Thank you very much
