Hi Allison, in my last message I was guessing about Ellen's last name. Ellen's last name is not Gorbutt or Garbutt. Ellen and Thomas White had a daughter Alice who must have married a Gorbutt (Garbutt), but he must have died while she was pregnant or before John was 2. It is possible the husband of Alice Gorbutt was killed in a coalmine accident since all of the White's were coalminers. On the 1881 census for Hindley, Wigan, Lancashire (Lancaster County) England, Alice Gorbutt 19 was listed as a widow with son John 1 years old living with her parents Thomas and Ellen. Now Alice's younger brother William and his wife and children came to USA in 1895. He may have came with other members of his family? I am still waiting for naturalization papers from IN archives to see if others came with them. One lady was nice enough to look up 1881 census for England. Here is what she sent. Now I have seen somewhere that Gorbutt was spelled Garbutt..not sure where I saw that info. But this may be your family too?
1881 census Hindley, boro of Wigan. Hope it helps you.
