An elusive ancestor by the name of Archibald Garabini appears and disappears in the 19th century records. He and his American born wife, Mary Jane (nee Tichenor), and six US born children resided in Harrison Mississippi in 1850 when he was using the name Joseph Garabini and working as a tailor. Later he appears to have adopted Archibald as his first name. The records indicate that he was born in Italy around 1800. There are a few later land records and directory records for him alone in New Jersey in the 1860s and 1880s. However he and most of his family vanished in the interval. We believe he may have resided in Aspinwall, Panama during the building of the railway there in the 1850s and he may be responsible for the naming of Garabini Ravine in California since there is some indication he became an engineer (either mining or construction). The fairly rare Garabini name shows up on a sailing record from Panama to New York in 1859 for a 16 year old Mary Garabini who we believe was his daughter Angelina. In 1865 Angelina Garabini married Civil War veteran Isaac Brokaw in Nevada and later lived in California and Indiana. There is also some indication of the Garabini name in Puerto Rico and this may explain an 1860 NJ land record where he used Archibald D Y Garobini in the Spanish style. Our last trace of him is of him living in South Orange, NJ in 1885. He probably died soon after. His apparently divorced wife Mary Jane (nee Tichenor) had a later marriage to an Aaron B or G Hawkins, and may even have been married to a Pinhero in the interval. Any leads on his or his family would be greatly appreciated and I'd be happy to share whatever I have on the connections into other families.

Hello Gislainegarabini: I researched Garabini Ravine with the US Geological Survey. They believe the Ravine was named for a Garbini family (Swiss Italian) who mined in that area in the late 19th century. However it remains possible that it was named for Angelina Garabini who married Isaac E Brokaw who was also a gold miner in California in the 1860s. Angelina was born in New Orleans in 1843; her father, Joseph Garabini was from Italy and born around 1800 and her mother, Mary Jane Tichenor was born in New Jersey around 1808. There also appears to have been a Garabini family that immigrated to the United States in the 1880s from Sicily.
