JOSEPH GAPPER
Joseph Frederick Gapper was born on June 19, 1926 in Huntington Park. He died on Aug. 31, 2008 at his home in Hesperia after a short illness and hospitalization at UCLA Ronald Reagan Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Lee, three daughters, Annie (John), Liz (Monty) and Colleen and one son, Fred (Barbara). He had 12 grandchildren and 16 greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Bob (Shirley).
Joe served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. He served in the European Theater, and specifically in the Mediterranean Sea. After the war ended, he was stationed in New Orleans where he met and married Mary Lee Purvis.
Joe and Mary Lee lived in El Monte, West Covina and Hesperia. He started a successful electrical contracting business and operated that business until he retired. He was a hobbyist craftsman, and enjoyed gradening at his home in Hesperia.
Family was very important to Joe. The Gapper family was very close and spent a great deal of time together. Joe and Mary Lee’s home was the gathering place for many large family celebrations. Of special note was the celebration of Joe and Mary Lee’s 60th anniversary and Joe’s 80th birthday in 2006.
