My earliest specific records begin with Z.Gapen b. 1733, but have no evidence that he is American progenitor. Indeed, have found references to earlier Gapin/Gapen's. What is the connection if any? Nov.22 1634 a John Gapin is mentioned in Mass. town records. A Bernard Gapin (or Capen) died in same Mass town in 1638, age 86. He had been born in England and left a son. (In at least one entry John and Bernard are mentioned together)Wm Gapin/Gapen was an immigrant from the British isles who arrived in America in the 1630's (passanger list reference?)--appointed by the General Assembly as a man"...of experience and integrity." The first census, in addition to Zachariah and 3 of his sons (Wash. Co, PA, lists another Gapen as head of a household in the Charleston area of S.C.
We know that Zachariah's m. Ruth Tindall and that his mother's maiden name was Mary Gawson and the maiden name of Ruth Tindall was Sarah Yarley or Yardley. Please reply to hardup0@lycos.com (that is a zero, not an upper case O. Many thanks, GB Gapen

The information I have is that the Gapen family are said to descend from the family of Guepin, of the province of Auvergne, in south central France.

That's very interesting news! I couldn't find anything back that far. My family connections also go back to Zachariah through his son Stephen. Please write back. Thanks, Kim

re: Auvergne--unlikely. Your source probably directly or indirectly from Furniss book Hill and Allied Families. I supplied Furniss much information among it this possibillity. There was another Guepin family from Dieppe france which may be slightly more likely. But there were Gapins/Gapens in Mass in the 1600's which seems like a short time after fleeing France for Protestant reasons, going to England, changing surname and coming to Mass. Of course the Mass Gapen/Gapin family may not be related to us and both Guepin families may be no relation as well. Please keep me informed. Thank you, George.

Surnames: Gapen Husk Provance
Searching for HUSK, I found a reference to ZACHARIAH GAPEN. I also found a SARAH YARD, who I think became SARAH PROVANCE by marriage to JOHN WILLIAM PROVANCE here: http://www.osmond.com/osnet/staff/html1/d0001/g0000083.htm#I...

Re: Z. GAPEN
Ref on land patent map of Monogahela Twp., Greene Co. PA.
Patented land: Jun 21, 1786

Samuel Husk is alleged to be buried in Dunkard Ridge, which is the name (nickname?) of the land patented to Z. GAPEN, as it appears on the map I have.

Any information about Husk or the existence of a Dunkard Ridge place or cemetery, would be appreciated.

tks

Hi,
I just found your message about half an hour ago and this is the second time I have tried to reply in 15 minutes. If you wish to correspond please address me at <Prosphora28@hotmail.com> My information prior to Zachariah Sr. is little more than apocryphal though there is evidence of place of family origin, possible armorial bearings, original surname spelling and several relocations prompted by religious persecution. I am hoping we can benefit one another. George Gapen, ggg granson of Z Sr.
