I am a decendent of William Roger Gappin who settled in Fannin Co., Ga. in the mid 1800s. He was born in Charleston, SC about 1808. His father's name was also William. I have been unable to document earlier Gappin ancestors. I know that there was a Zachariah Gapen in Green Co., PA who had a son named William. I have assumed that this was my line of ancestors. However, another decendent says that this is not true. Can you be of any help.

Thanks,

Tal Fowler

Are you basing some information in your question on research by Ed Rider?

My brother and i so far, have been unable to discover the mother and father of the William Gapin that you are researching. Please send me your direct e-mail address and I will answer in more depth.

Thanks for your reply. My E-mail address is:tal_f_99@yahoo.com. Thanks for any info you may have. I have found records of William Roger Gappin's baptism in a church in Charleston, SC. That record states that his father's name was also William. Solid documentation beyond this has been unavailable. Are you a decendent also? I have further info if you should desire. My main interest now is documentation as to whether his second wife, my g-g-grandmother, was an Indian.

Thanks,

Tal Fowler PS> Also send me your E-mail address.

I am also investigating the Gapen line. I found today an old letter which may provide some help. Please reply and I will send an excerpt for your perusal.

My husband is a direct decendant of Z. Gapen.
I do not remember a William Roger is the
biogrophy. Yet, this is not a common name as
Smith or Davis. Please reply if you'd like.

Thanks for your reply. According to my notes Zacharaih(b.1733) Ruth Tindall(b.1740)had a son named William(b.1763). There were several Zachariah Gapens. In fact Zachariah had a son named Zachasriah(b.1772. My g-g-grandfather, William Roger Gappin's(Gapen)father was named William also. I'm not sure he was the William who was the son of Zachariah. William Roger Gappin was born in Charleston, SC. Zachariah was from Pa. Those fronteersmen did move around and it's quite possible that his decendents got to Charleston.

Thanks again. Tal Fowler

Zachariah Gapen, b. 1733 is my ggg grandfather through his eldest son, Stephen. I am trying to find country of origin, American progenitor, coat of arms, etc. I have found several much earlier Gapin's/Gapen's but have been unable to find links to ZACHARIAH, e.g.: Wm. an immigrant from the British Isles (passenger ship list?) arriving in 1630's. And was referred to as a man "of experience and integrity" by the General Assembly. A John was in Mass by 1634. Bernard (John's bro.?) died in Mass at age 86 in 1638 having been born in England in 1552 whose son John was born in circa 1602
in America. The 1790 census heads of households lists my GGG Grandfather and 3 of his sons plus another Gapin/Gapen was a head of household near Charleston, SC. Of course, we know that Zachariah's wife was Ruth Tindall and his mother was Mary Gawson. Ruth Tindall's mother's maiden name was Sarah Yarley or Yardley. If anyone can supply pertinent information please e-mail to hardup0@lycos.com (That, as I tire of explaining in a zero not an upper case O)! Many thanks, George Ben Gapen, BA, BA, M.Div.

I've really just begun my "Gappens" research. I'm looking for W.H. Gappens guessing to have been born in the 1860's. According to his daughters death certificate he was born in Indiana. W.H. Gappens married Harriet Isabelle Holt and had 3 daughters; Sallie Lillian, Bessie Iona and Margaret(sp?)L. On the death certificate of Harriet Isabelle Holt it states her mother's maiden name was Gappens. Could anyone help?
