Well, this was all very entertaining to read.
My maternal grandfather is a Gaona and he immigrated to Texas in 1946. He was from Tamaulipas Mexico. His father... Well, that is the question. Family stories state Spain but that is about it. I have not been able to trace any documentation on my grandfather (during his time in Mexico) or his brother or half siblings. Nobody's stories match up with mine but I'm sure with such a rare name that we are related a few generations back.

Hello, Antonio,
My Grandfather, Emiliano Gaona y Arredondo was a first-cousin to Rodolfo Gaona (the bull-fighter). My Dad, Roberto Gaona, was raised in Mexico City, but the family was originally from Leon, Guanajuato. My Dad migrated to the U.S. at 19 in the 1940's during WWII, and wound up in San Jose, CA, my hometown.
FYI, my brother Richard had his Y-Chromosome DNA test done through Ancestry.com and the migration of the Gaona males is very interesting in that it starts in the Israel area, then Central Asia, and eventually the Basque region of Spain. It indicates that our branch of ancestors were strongly Celtic. The DNA shows that many Basques immigrated to South America and may have then immigrated to Mexico.
What was your Grandfather's full name? What was the name of Rodolfo's relative? I'd love to know this info. Thank you!
Connie Gaona Sands
